The drummer Jimmy "the Rev" Sullivan passed away while they were writing the album this song is on. They all grew up together and were all legitimately best friends.
That's the way I thought of it too. That part I can't listen to without shedding some tears . I can't imagine what it was like recording this and how hard that was on them . Some tears were definitely shed making this album .
All of the emotions. I feel the hurt in the song. My mother asked that this specific song was played at her funeral and I cried like a baby. Any time it plays I cry like a baby.
Their original bass guitarist tried to commit suicide, the songs "I won't see you tonight part 1 and 2" were about him. However the album nightmare (the one so far away is off) is dedicated to James Owen Sullivan (Jimmy or The Reverend "The Rev") who was found dead in his home 3 days after turning his demo of the song "Fiction" in to Matt (M. Shadows, the main vocalist). There is a speculation of Fiction being the suicide note from Jimmy. Most of the songs on Nightmare, had their drums done by Mike Portnoy who was Jimmy's idol. If you want to hear more from Jimmy these are songs you should listen to: Bat Country Almost Easy M.i.A. I love a7x. Syn, the guitarist, is one of THE best. Yes, this is a goodbye, tribute to their drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. He passed away at a young age due to an undiagnosed heart issue that he piled too much alcohol and drugs onto. The band all grew up together and started playing music together at a very young age (jr high, I think?). They grew up as brothers. Jimmy’s death was devastating to them. The home videos and photo slideshows in the video is of them with jimmy and showing their antics. Jimmy was like a class clown, very amusing and loving. You’ll notice in this song and if you react to Nightmare that their is no drummer shown. This song being about jimmy and Nightmare being written (at least partially) by Jimmy.
Unfortunately, it was known to them. From birth he had an enlarged heart (the drugs and alcohol definitely didn't help), but he wasnt expected to live more than a few years anyway, many who knew him said thats why he lived the way he did, without fear and all the love his giant heart could hold.
"Technically", it was an overdose that got him, but there is lots of speculation that it was intentional because of the song brompton cocktail being one of the more hidden songs he wrote, and from what ive read, the song itself being written as a literall goodbye note.
@@tristanwhitson8705 yes the overdose got him but he could have gotten heart surgery. Steven Crowder had to have chest surgery because he had an enlarged heart. Their drummer the Rev died of an OD back in 2009. This song is part of a trilogy dedicated to his memory. Check out "Fiction" and "Save Me" next to round out the "Rev trilogy."
I remember when this came out, I have never cried so much, RIP JIMMY ♥️ this song is still tough to listen to. However it’s a beautiful song with such meaning and power and a message, WE MISS YOU REV #foREVer #A7X
Man what a touching tribute to their lost brother and drummer REV, they grew up since 2nd grade and rose to fame together. All the clips at the end of the video are of the The Rev. ALSO, Synyster Gates guitar usually says "SYN" on the fretboard, but in this video it says "REV". RIP... "It seems were so invincible, the truth is so cold"...
I saw this song live at one of their concerts years ago and the lighters/cellphone lights went up in remembrance of The Rev. I even slow danced with a random girl to it. Great concert.
Actually it was the song Fiction but, M. Shadows was singing like “The Rev”. “Fiction” was the last song “The Rev” wrote and he died 3 days later. Mike Portnoy, the drummer for Dream Theater finished the album.
It's Synyster Gates on backing vocals here, actually. He wrote So Far Away for his grandpa when Jimmy was still alive. His dad played the acoustic interlude. When Jimmy passed, the whole album's meaning changed.
Great choice! A7X was the first band that got me into metal back in 2004 in Huntington Beach. So many songs to choose from, Whatever you react to do a live version of the song in concert. That’ll show you what they’re about!
This was the song I played at my brothers funeral a year ago because he was a drummer and passed at the young age of 36. So this song hits hard for me. Nice to see others coming across it.

RIP Jimmy “Rev” Sullivan... I was fortunate enough to see A7X before the Rev passed on and again afterwards... much love to you guys! Thanks for the awesome reaction videos.

FoREVer. Rip Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. Unbelievably sad as they grew up with him ever since they were little kids. They did all these things together, so this absolutely devastated them. They loved him. Like actually loved him, and you can see it in the montage at the end.
Bat country is great don’t get me wrong. City of evil as an album alone is already technical asf. Especially on Jimmy’s part. But Beast and the Harlot is where he shines. The drum solo is one you’ll always remember. In my opinion it’s one of the best songs he really went all out.
A7X has the most loyal fans. I have their logo on my Jeep and on my motorcycle gas tank. This group will definitely take you down a different type of rabbit hole.

React to the tribute video to The Rev. I tear up every time I hear this song and the song that he sings on the last album he worked on titled Fiction. Now from what I've read and researched on this talented young man, he said to others, a few times that he would be a famous rockstar and would die young. He told that to his best friends father Brian Haner Sr. (AKA Jeff Dunham's Guitar Guy & AKA Papa Gates). Also from all the reading and using my knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, it sounded like Jimmy "the Rev" Sullivan was suffering from an enlarged heart due to his alcoholism. From what I've read, his entire family, blood and extended, knew he was an alcoholic and had been to rehab more than once. He constantly complained of what he thought (and probably those closest to him did as well) he was dealing with acid reflux or an ulcer. He had been to see a GI (gastro intestinal doctor) just before he died. He had been scheduled or was being scheduled to see a cardiologist but he died before he got to see that doctor. The combination of the alcoholism, enlarged heart and pain medication took him from all that loved him. The root of his death was the alcoholism. I'm probably going to be attacked for stating the facts. People can believe what they want but it boils down to facts. However, facts don't change. Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan was an incredible talent. That part will never change no matter what. I've seen so many people (people I know or admired) taken by addiction that it is mind boggling. Many fans think that he committed suicide. I don't believe for a minute that he would ever hurt the people he loved by being that selfish. I don't believe he would EVER inflict that kind of pain on his family, extended family or his fans. Watch some of the tribute videos about him... you'll see what I have seen. He truly LOVED everyone that was close to him.
