That is easier said than done. We do not have any resources. All things need to be imported. If LKY, GCT , LHL cannot do , and I am sure that LW will have to work hard to do something about it . But one thing I am damned sure Dr Chee can do nothing about it . He is just going back in history which is useless . We need to move forward and personally , I will rather do it with LW together than with Dr Chee. It is my personal direction and I am not influencing any one on this platform, unlike Dr Chee

My great grandfather is from China just like many other Chinese and India Singaporean. Our forefather was once a foreigner to this land too and decide to stay and make it call home. Singapore has a history of influx foreigners and immigrants, as early as the between 14th and 17th centuries where early Chinese settlers can be trace back to. @@siaboonleong I do not agree with your reasoning. Many of our forefathers do not migrate to Singapore because they were patriotic to the British colony or Singapore back then. They migrate for the most simplest reason is to search for a better life, escape poverty and to some as a means to support their family back in their homeland. In your own words they were also taking advantage of what opportunities that were available to them. They did not come and expect to stay to fight a war too. Even they were force to fight in World War 2 they were not fighting exactly for British. As many of them have strong affiliation back to their homeland in those day. Which is why Chinese were the most targeted group during the Japanese Occupation, as many are providing financial assistance to support the war effort back in China. So to say a foreigner to prove his or her loyalty by fighting a war is irrational, senseless and not implementable. I can’t imagine what will Singapore be if we declare war every now and then with our neighbors or any countries as part of immigration requirement. What I am pointing out is that we should not view immigration policy and expect result in the short term. Many of us true blue Singaporean are the 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation of our forefathers. Our identity rooted because we are born and grow up here, which is very different from our forefathers experience. Yes it is understandable that you have doubts for those 1st generation immigrants. I'm scared about being blacklisted for this but I say my 2 cents worth.
The pap will probably make thier stand that we will import more foreigners to really try to solve the population,I mean it's not hard to tell that is the generalised way to solve the problem. The pap is not worried they are part of the top elites of the country, they won't make it obvious but behind the scenes they will ramp up thier efforts to try get more foreigners to come.Anyways just saying the demographics will be changing in yrs to come.Wondering where the influx will come too.Probably say I'm stupid too.Do monitor and watch the situation closely.Could be Malaysian chinese or mainland Chinese or south east asian or even westerners.Dont know.Just hope I don't become like a slave in my own land.

@@carlanthony1724 the low TFR cannot be resolved by the citizens. Singapore since her founding years had been reshaped and progressed because of immigrants and will continue to do so with more immigrants. This is an undeniable trend. Singaporeans must evolve and accept that we are also citizens of the world. Once we have achieved the right knowledge, skills and talent we too can do likewise and work overseas to broaden our scope and experience. That's what many western digital nomads are doing today. There is nothing to fear and nothing wrong with welcoming talented foreigners to our shores to live and work. When you talk about originality and creativity 2 countries stand out in the world. Israel and USA What do these 2 countries have in common? The American dream is the rags to riches story of an immigrant making a good life in the USA so they welcome and attract immigrants. Israel " Law of Return" welcomes all Jews to this promise land to make it their home. Singapore has reached the status of a world class destination achieving top standing as a place to live. , work and bring up children . This is our greatest achievement and branding. Top in the world for forward looking government, high per capita GDP, excellent infrastructure, transport system, healthcare , education and urban living environment. Maybe that's why it is also the most expensive and also stressful city in the world. Singaporeans must learn to appreciate this. Our existential threat is when citizens give up the life challenges and demand more welfarism and at the same time restricts talented foreigners to prevent them from taking roots in this small island. This is the time that Singapore will become an average city declining to a insignificant red dot nobody wants to associate with and then subsequently perish and join the ranks of Philippines, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia.

The following four issues (existential threats) raised by Dr Chee ,which he has pointed out is the fault of government, are not new. These are old battle cries which are certainly dated and has lost its relevance given how far Singapore has progressed
    1. The TFR is declining ( presumably because of the high cost of living )and aged population is increasing
    2. The cost of living has gone up for the past 3 decades
    3. The influx of foreigners is a threat to every Singaporeans
    4. The high stress faced by Singaporeans
The decline in TFR and the rise in the aged population are experienced in every mature economy and developed country with an educated population. Countries in Europe and US are in the same situation . In some way we can blame government for the increase in aged population because our excellent health care system has extended their life span. The "stop at two children" family policy has to some extend also contributed to the TFR the same way as the one child policy has contributed to the overall population decline in China. But the US and Europe do not have such policies to limit the size of their population but they too faced these unintended consequences although not so obvious because they mitigate the effects by allowing immigrants into their country. So how do you explain this same phenomenon across developed and mature economies? Is it a trend amongst the better educated young people in developed countries to marry later and produce less children ? You will notice that most third world countries' TFR are not so seriously affected although they may have low survival rate of their children and elderly population due to their poor healthcare system
Inflation takes 2 forms . Imported inflation because prices of imported goods are on the rise globally and local inflation caused by higher prices in housing, cars , education , healthcare, transport ...etc. Government tackles imported inflation by controlling the strength of the Singapore currency. Government cannot be blamed for these price increases of imported items and NTUC had been tasked to help mitigate these increases through bulk purchase and an efficient distribution and sales network . As for cars Singaporeans know why these are the most expensive in the world . At the same time Singaporeans also acknowledged the efficient and affordable public transport system which has been rated as one of the best in the world. Similarly our education system has been rated one of the best in the world with top global ranking for NUS. The fees charged by our education institutions compared to those ivy league universities charged by UK or US are very competitive. Our healthcare are also well regulated and subsidised for Singaporeans . Again we have to compare them against similar facilities in developed countries. As for housing the citizens are insulated because of our pubilc HDB housing policies . You do not see slumps in Singapore . While we complain about high HDB prices sold at over S$1 million you have to see who benefitted from these high prices. All prices in any commodity or assets are well regulated by the forces of demand and supply . The market mechanism will adjust prices to meet both the demand and supply and government keeps a close watch on the housing bubble and introduced cooling measures when necessary to ensure it does not burst because any downward adjustment of property prices will wipe out the wealth of property owners ( over 90 % of the citizen population) . Extensive infrastructure development funded by government is also responsible for the appreciation of property prices in Singapore. But do you rather we remain a back water mosquito infested swamp and live in those conditions? Our taxes create reserves to fund these infrastructure improvements and more.
Given the high cost of living Singaporeans need not worry about foreigners coming to our shores to take over their jobs. Expats have to pay high rentals for their accommodation and quality lifestyle that they have been used to in their current countries . So they need a certain level of income and employers will only pay high income if they have the talent, qualifications , experience and skills. So the high cost of living in Singapore operates as an additional screening filter to only let in talented professionals. Why would companies want to pay high salaries to foreigners if the locals can do the job ? Are these companies not profit motivated which needs to provide adequate returns to their shareholders?
So on balance we have to compare the cost of living with our GDP per capita . Singapore's GDP has been consistently ranked top 5 over the last few years . But Dr. Chee never provided these statistics . Our debt to GDP though high at about 167% of GDP but we borrow because we want to develop our bond market and also to fund infrastructure that are profit generating . Unlike many countries , developed or otherwise, they borrow to cover their budget deficits. Over the years the PAP government has a good track record on generating budget surplus to keep the country going in good times and in bad times.
Our "existential threat" lies not in these 4 outdated issues but lies in a decline in the quality of our citizens in the workforce and in our schools who keep complaining about "high stress" in the country. Singapore has been ranked in the top 5 financial centres in the world . When you look at the workforce in these centres like New York , London, ..etc the average Singaporean is no more stressful than the executives in these cities. Parents complain about the stress in our schools . Our only resource is the people and we need to make sure that every child continues to do better than their parents and grandparents in order for Singapore to survive and stay relevant to the world.
So Dr Chee please stop all these dated arguments stating that they are our existential threat . They are the reasons why Singapore has been successful and ranked so highly in many aspects globally and the envy of many countries. If you want to really help Singapore ,shift your focus from the next election because | think Singaporeans are tired of hearing about your grouses with government . Instead focus on Singapore's achievements and rally the citizens to be better prepared by equipping themselves and more importantly their children for a tough future that lies ahead because our economic growth is likely to remain single digit and the global needs will cause more structural unemployment more frequently because jobs will become obsolete very quickly. So within our working life we need to continue to gain new knowledge , new skills to fit into new jobs changing at least 3 different careers in order to be able to last the 30 to 35 years of our working life. This is a new trend that those who are now above 60 years old have never experienced in their life time and cannot relate to them and therefore unable to come up with the right strategies to ensure our survival. Singapore's existential threat is to degenerate to become a welfare state with the population taking their own sweet time to find their role in life to become a productive resource in the society. We have to move ahead of the fast changing pace of a globalised world!
As for the issue of foreigners coming to our shores to work and live in Singapore we must not stop them. We need to ensure that they are the talent needed in the global environment and hopefully when they come and experience the lifestyle and the safe and secure environment to bring up their children they will stay with us and take up citizenship. Our society has to continue to stay alert and evolve to accept these talent and their contributions to continue to make Singapore successful. Without these talented professionals we have no "insurance policy" to insulate ourselves against our declining TFR and to keep the high standards required in a productive workforce so that we can continue to rank amongst the top countries in a challenging world.

Well-articulated and totally agree with you. Singaporeans need to wake up and realized that if we don't be on our toes all the time, others will catch up and overtake us. Look at how fast China can develop when they are focus on improving themselves. Same with our neighbouring economies when they get their acts together. If we just rest on our laurels, be prepared to fall behind in future decades.

Immigration and influx of foreigners had been happening to Singapore as early as 14 centuries with early Chinese settlers way back before British colony and up to presence day Singapore. The best way to answer those question is to find out from your family history. When and why your forefather migrate to Singapore. I can assure you that many (1st generation) that came were because of opportunities that they can take advantage of. What matters is the 2nd generation onwards their affiliation to the (1st gen) homeland they came from will dilute over time. Isn’t this what happens to us? They have altered the fabric of Singaporean society; complicated its societal value (in a negative way) and ruined the future of young Singaporeans. I told my children that in their next lives, they should seriously consider being born in another country and then migrate to Singapore so that they don’t have to serve the 2-year mandatory national service and pay the same tax rate as the locals.

We can all agree that inflation is driven by supply and demand-high demand with low supply causes inflation, while high supply with low demand leads to deflation.
The real question is: how are prices controlled? Unless Singapore can produce its own goods-meaning it has the necessary natural resources and manufacturing capabilities-there will always be a reliance on the global market, making the country more vulnerable to price fluctuations.
At best, the government can subsidize certain essential costs, which they are already doing. However, CSJ seems to suggest that reducing domestic demands will lower prices, blaming foreigners for driving prices up

While high cost of living maybe one of the contributing factor but is it really just the only factors. From what I experienced with some people I interact with. It is more of how they view about marriage and children mean to them. To some it is a loss of freedom. To some they prefer to keep dogs and cats as pets, which in their view is less burdensome. But if they are, how can I learn from them, and also innovate to improve on it and make it my own to compete with them". Form associations, interest groups, mentorship of Singaporeans overseas and here to share any knowledge and experience. Build a tighter social cohesion amongst own citizens. Gather and setup VC funds from the region to fund high tech Singaporean businesses to compete in the region. Nurture own people beyond the school curriculum, outdoor learning skills, exchange trips around the region, create opportunities and internships abroad. Encourage team building and collaboration skills at school. Building larger homes with more personal space for development and well-being of its citizens.

I understand your concern about discussing problems and give unrealistic solutions. It's worth noting that the cost of living is rising worldwide not just Singapore. Foreigners would only do dirty jobs with cheap and low pay with foreigners. We have to pay a lot more for Singaporeans if we hire them. This would come back to us and further rising the cost of living. Are you aware that many of the newborn parents are foreign spouse?

Agreed the cost of living is high...even the prices in the NTUC is so high. Singaporeans migrating because they cant achieve their aspirations of owning a vehicle, a decent flat etc. Ever increasing ERP with no questions asked, high utilities and GST. Worse still they are already implementing carless zones😢😢😢😢. The rich is getting richer and the middle and lower income getting worse. The vouchers given out only solve the problem a month or so...than what? We got 365 days lor! Eat maggie mee throughout lor!

All those who said they will not gained financially freedom first have to learn how to spend less than what they earned ! Why need to buy a car , when you parked it from 9:00 am to 6pm while in the office when the MRT can send them there ? And for the weekends, use the MRT to bring your children out . Or more comfortably , take grap or comfort. I am 100% optimistically sure that it will not burn your pocket compared to owning a car. Why buy a Million $ condo when you can live comfortably in HDB. By all means, if you can afford , do it.

The idea I suppose is to integrate the new immigrants and convert them and their children into citizens in the years ahead. Already we are seeing many young SGean children born to Mainland Chinese and Indian parents living in the heartlands

Government have to do these to make our currency worth something. So even toilet cleaner can retire in some part of the world.
There are billions of people that work and never able to retire, die penniless, maybe without home , or their home is dog shelter equivalent.
I think it's Singaporean part to be competent

Reading the comments section and people here don’t seem to comprehend that some of us “Singaporeans” might not even be here had our great grand father not immigrate from India/China/Malaysia to Singapore. 😂 I agree that we do have to strike a balance between foreign and local to provide opportunities for our selves but the constrain is obvious. (1) Birth rates are low (2) Foreigners are willing to do more for less (3) Foreigners do jobs that Singaporeans do not do but still needed (Cleaners/ Garbage collectors) (4) Capping the “competitiveness” of foreigners in Singapore will discourage investors/businesses from growing here
So if someone has a magical solution that can fix all of this inter-twinning issues, please voice out your suggestion and don’t just give me 1 liners.I am a PAP supporter but I feel pragmatic solutions should be party blind.

I feel we need new ppl to come in to maintain the population… it’s fine. The issue is how to improve the birth rate
If foreigners come in to make a good difference, why not?
So how is the opposition plan to raise the TFR ?
If Dr Chee to be PM, what would he do?
