Dr Chee criticizes PM Wong for ignoring key issues of living costs and foreign worker influx

  • Dr Chee Soon Juan of the Singapore Democratic Party strongly critiques Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's recent National Day Rally, pointing out the absence of concrete solutions for two critical issues-rising living costs and the influx of foreign workers.
In his latest video, Dr Chee underscores the urgency for clear, actionable plans rather than vague promises, questioning whether PM Wong truly understands the struggles of ordinary Singaporeans given his privileged position.
He calls for a reversal of the country's dependence on cheap foreign labour and emphasizes the need for policies that genuinely improve productivity and make homeownership attainable for future generations.

Many Singaporeans are singles because the men prefer to marry women from neighbouring countries. They are cheaper to maintain and additionally they are good taking care of their Singapore husband. Singaporean women can then choose to marry foreigners who come here to work and would be happy to get a PR or become citizen of the country.

They want condos whose prices jacked up by foreigners, some are money launderers. They want eat atas foods prices skyrocket due to rentals. So they are into marriage with a crooked mind or incorrect thinking. So they either cannot find a partner they are satisfied with or they land in divorces due to unsatisfied needs of the 5Cs

The GST should not have been raised. But in raising it, there is no checks on suppliers’ profiteering from this hike. As far as productivity is concerned, most local SME bosses do NOT practice care and respect for their staff. I have heard of many cases where workers are treated poorly with little benefits but the bosses are driving big cars. These bosses then turn around to complain about high costs to the Government who in turn give them grants. And these grants are partly funded by the workers in terms of income tax and consumption taxes. Even old people who buy bread pays the GST for these types of grants. The government, through GLCs are also the largest landlords who charge sky high rentals, sometimes indiscriminately. Who cares about productivity with such rent-seeking mindsets and culture, direct from the top?

HDB prices have reached insane levels and yet HDB declares that it is making a loss for every new unit. Worse, the floor areas are getting smaller and smaller. Is there any wonder mental illness cases are on the rise in Singapore??
I suggest that before LW makes anymore statements, let him be subject to the following for 12 months first, in order to let him see and feel first hand what life really is.
    1) Cut his salary to just $2000 a month
    2) Disallow him to get any loans from any party
    3) Take away his car, get him to travel by bus and MRT
    4) Make him stay in a 3-room HDB flat, and pay $300 in monthly mortgage.
    5) Make him pay for his own household bills
    6) Freeze all other incomes, including those of his wife
    7) Assign 1 poor aged parent, and 1 young child to support.
Then see, how he feels. After this 1 year hands-on intensive life experience, he will probably become a better PM.

Additionally, the point on HDB making a loss, that's literally what HDBs are---government-subsidised housing. HDB prices are rising NOT because HDB increases prices to make profit... It's much more complicated than what you think.

HDB prices are at insane prices because of the greedy sellers, please be clear about this! All prices of HDB start off about the same at affordable 6 fig prices. Years later, those owner who feel their flats are located in prime locations or overlooking nice views etc will want to sell them at a premium. For younger people who wanna just blame others for their housing problems, start with your own parents. If the generation before you do not ask for million dollar prices for their HDBs, you too won't be paying million dollars for such resale flats. I am a born and bred Singaporean who served my NS and pay my dues. I disagree with your statement. The comment of "reducing the influx of foreigners" is too wide and ambiguous. Do you have your stats? What 'level' of foreigners?
We need foreign labour for construction, shipping and F&B. without these 'influx', Singapore cannot function as we don't have sufficient manpower locally.
I do know of many foreign MNCs who was coaxed by our EDB to invest in Singapore and created many jobs for our locals. But in return, they needed a certain number of EPs to bring in their core team. Do we tell them No? Or see the silver lining that by getting in these foreigners (they pay taxes), many other jobs will be created?
There are also another segment of foreigners who bring new knowledge, skills, expertise that will improve our industry, and up our status internationally. We say we selectively bring in these talents.
Our birth rates is not sufficient to replenish our work force. We all know of peers who will not marry, or not have children (or have more than 1 kid) regardless of how much the govt dishes out. These are dynamics / mentality of our population that are many dimensional which cannot be solved that easily. Do we let the population age and let our workforce reduce over time? I say we bring in foreigners of similar culture and embed them in our society.
bigger & better industries + bigger workforce = higher GDP
We can only do these if we have good and appropriate immigration policies.
I applaud your tenancity in Singapore politics. But I suggest you shift your sole focus from 'bringing down the government', to actions that better our society and community at large. Thank you.

On the point about "Check the inflow of foreign workers, and raise the productivity, do the job better, so that one worker can eventually do two workers' job". It is not as simple as he said
As it stands now, most companies are already overloading each of their employees with 2 or more workers' worth of workload. Employees, especially front-liners, are given more tasks and responsibilities, and are expected to work beyond their stated working hours in the name of service. Many other employees are expected to be on 24-hours standby. Does that mean productivity has gone up?
Hell no! Continuously staying late or on 24 hours standby for work is actually counter-productive, as it increases the risk of burnout for employees. Productivity means increasing the rate of output in the same amount of time, either through skills development/upgrading and/or with the help of technology. But companies must be willing to invest in their employees and technology, and compensate their employees well. Not merely squeezing their employees dry.
And there are just some jobs that most SIngaporeans shun, eg construction, customer service, funeral service, nursing, domestic help, cleaning service, waste management, and F&B, etc.
How do you expect to check the inflow of foreign workers in these critical sectors that few Singaporeans want to go into? Unless Singaporeans can check their own mindsets about jobs, companies would have to hire more foreign workers. And given that foreign workers can work longer hours at cheaper rate, Singaporeans will almost always lose out, if companies only want cheap labour that can work longer hours, instead of really investing in employee's development, skills and productivity.
The fact that our birth rate is declining is not helping, either. It means that our local workforce is continuously shrinking in an aging population.
Therefore, both companies and Singaporean employees need to have a serious mindset change. Otherwise, it's all just talk.

The PM’s attitude to the escalating HDB price issue is to accept and allow HDB prices to continue to rise, i.e. do not regulate and just let the market take its course. Instead, the PAP’s solution is to continually increase the subsidy and grant to cosmetically make HDB prices appear affordable. This is not addressing the root of the problem but to throw more (gimmicky) grants and subsidies at buyers. Singaporeans will eventually regret when they sell their flats down the road because the government will crawl back the grants and subsidies given to you at the point of purchase. Surely, this is NOT confronting and addressing the root causes of escalating HDB prices, which are supply side issues; the decision by HDB to stop providing a “valuation price” that formed the basis on which buyers and sellers ultimately agree on a cash over/under valuation transacted price; and stem the influx of foreigners which drive rental prices (including HDB rental prices) up. I do NOT think LKY ever conceived the HDB flat as a mean to obtaining passive rental income.

Easy answer, tens of thousands of businesses and residents will move to JB come 2027 when the MRT line is extended to JB. No more congested causeway. Get a bicycle, park at Bukit Chagar station vicinity and commute to Singapore. I see a tsunami coming....most SMEs will migrate as rentals, wages, overheads are much cheaper in JB. Once we can commute without the hassle of the causeway, the equation will change drastically. Singaporeans unfortunately will lose out even more...no need to bring in Malaysians...hire them in JB at wages much lower than in Singapore (as rentals for housing is also much cheaper, food and transportation, etc. are all cheaper). Yes, cost will drop but so will jobs...far fewer jobs. For Singaoreans...start your own business in JB. If you are waiting to be hired in 2027...good luck.

Automation not only reduce the dependent of foreign workers but also mean retrechmentof local workers and even engineers. Pushing workers harder and harder will stress them more and more and we all know the consequences of both scenarios . And all these are skills in the above areas not taught at University particularly post graduate like masters or PhD . Perhaps some in the bachelor programme but the bulk is via actual practice in industry . Honestly, I do not think India had skilled Engineers in most of the areas I wrote . Not even China, where I worked from 2006 to 2019. We still need to send Engineers and Managers to manage these functions in our overseas factory. There are still a lot of Singaporeans highly skill in these areas and these will not be managed remotely like what you wrote. For my own opinion
    1) if you do not wish foreigner to take over singapore you will need to pay higher salary to support Singaporeans worker but employer will suffer
    2) many Singaporeans will not accept dirty or hard work that is why employer need foreigner to take over the job
    3) there is no choice because everything is increase and cost of living also increase if the gov does not increase singapore will fall behind like other country with example malaysia with low exchange rate
With this option singaporean only can choose either suffer now for batter generation or fall behind and suffer later with high living cost for your generation

The analysis provided here effectively identified the root cause of the unease many of our fellow citizens are experiencing. As a result, the government now finds it necessary to allocate a budget to address our collective well-being, which was previously in a much better state.
Personally, I currently work with foreigners and permanent residents, and I rarely encounter fellow citizens in the workplace. It seems that higher management continues to hire foreigners, making it difficult for our own citizens to gain exposure to skilled jobs and advance in their careers. Meanwhile, foreigners come and go, leaving behind a void that is then filled by yet another foreign worker.
Despite our strong education system, we seem unable to perform the jobs that are being handled by foreigners from third-world countries. This raises the question: where is the gap? How can Singaporean citizens gain exposure to high-demand jobs and climb the career ladder? I’m willing to work hard, earn more, and pay more, but we need to address these underlying issues.

Costs of living is a problem everywhere in the world, and not just in Singapore. I remembered one guy complained that he is earning 10K a month and cannot save . Of course lah, he rented a Condo, buy a expensive car , eat at posh restaurant, many classes for his children, massage for his wife, and and and. And in a way, we all need to help to control cost. Coffee shops selling coffee for S$ 1.50 , they also buy. Should boycott such profiteers. Make your own coffee at home or at least drink it in Government hawker centr @ S$1.10. Do not eat Prawn noodle at S$ 6.00 a bowl. Many hawker cenre still selling them at S$ 4.50. I can go on and on . The mindset is that we are expecting the Government to care of practically everything under the sky . God will provide food for everyone, but he will not drop them into your nest . You had to work hard for it. Coming to MP and PM getting high salary . Dr Chee , you can also aspire to earn similar salary . No one is stopping you . Propel youself into MP material and then perhaps one day PM . I am not being sarcastic but it is a fact. No one is stopping you.

“Costs of living is a problem everywhere in the world ..." yes, "everywhere" indeed but there is only ONE most expensive city in the list and that's Singapore (according to Julius Baer's The Global Wealth and Lifestyle Report 2024). So apparently we have a BIGGER problem here because we are the most expensive city.
And seriously, nobody in the 21st century "expecting the Government to care of practically everything under the sky . ". I don't know what give you that thought. This is not the 80s or 90s. The people is a lot more educated now. But we don't expect the govt to be the creator of our daily "cost of living" problems.

@@xthene Hello, I do not how you are engaged to the ground . I was borned in 1953 and I can remember my starting salary was about only S$ 365 per month graduating from the poly. I started work in 1972 and had to wait almost 10 years to buy my first flat . Now , a fresh graduate out of U wanted to buy a BOT flat , and laments that it is too expensive to buy ! All the surveys on cost of living is skewed to foreigners living in another country. I do not know if you ever eat in a hawker centre in which a plate of Chicken rice is still available at around S$ 3.50 . And if you compared this at a restaurant frequented by expatriate, you will know why we are the most expensive. If I want a beer, I will buy an Anchor beer from NTUC and drink it while watching premier league . The same can of beer in a Pub or coffee house will tell you the gap. Another aspect when people talk about cost of living , they often neglect the earning power of the people in Singapore. I worked and lived in China for many years. One bowl of noodle perhaps is 15 to 20 RMB which is roughly S$ 3 to S$ 4. But an average Chinese Engineer graduate earns perhaps now 4000 to 5000 RMB , which is about 800 to 1000 S$. And I am sure you know that Singapore U graduate earns around S$ 4000 , which is 5 times more . So in that direction, the bowl of noodles in China is costly as compared with Singapore. I hope I had given some areas in which we need to look at before following the crowd to sing the Song that Singapore is the most expensive city ( for the general population ) . If that is the case, all our technicians and workers ( I mean Singaporeans) earning around S$ 3000 will be dead by now. If we live according to our means , we still can go by .

You can corner them by saying it's not proper comparison to compare different countries because almost every parameter is different. SG today must be compared with SG 4 years ago or something like that. SG leaders are paid uniquely different than all the other "mediocre" leaders. Who has the cheek to compare with lowly paid leaders when they are paid extremely handsomely?

If you believe that the influx of foreigners is merely to fill labor gaps, you are mistaken. The deeper strategy is to dilute the local population, reducing the influence of anti-PAP voters. At the same time, the government systematically increases its loyal base by extending kindness, support, and privileges intended for native-born citizens to these new arrivals. This tactic subtly shifts the demographic balance in favor of those who will uphold the current power structure.

What if the inflow of foreigners shown in the chart is meant to cater for the increasing number of constructions required - btos, park connectors, upgrading of 5g to 6g network etc. Are singaporean really displaced by foreigners in good job roles or is it simply that we are too picky about what we want.
