    Small Footprint living has more advantages than most think. In episode one of this new series Colin steps out of his own 37sqm/290sqft apartment to meet the architects and city planners resisting urban sprawl. As well as returning to The Warren with Nicholas Gurney for a deep dive into its space efficient design and the role small, well designed apartments have in our future cities. In Melbourne, architects Michael Frazzetto and Ellen Kwek share how small footprint architecture and an innovative bedroom design have afforded them a family home in an area they were priced out of. reflecting on how Australia might be lagging behind more considered European cities like Amsterdam.
    Our regular Never Too Small episodes will continue releasing fortnightly. This is a different kind of series from us, but we’re excited to know what you think. Please leave us feedback and comments on the video.

      Will there be episodes from Winter cities?? So many of the tiny home solutions offered are located in warm climates. We in the north are offered few examples of tiny spaces that also accomodate four dramatically different seasons, with the building heating infrastructure; the extra clothing and transportation devices (snow tires, studded bike tires, down parkas, ski boots, snowshoes, skis; etc.).
      Accept this challenge: design something for Edmonton, or Regina, or Saskatoon.

    I see your point and do understand your train of thought, but most countries have different building regulations and haven't even thought of making smaller more affordable housing with quality. Most people think of affordable housing "poor" council estates. Design needs to be sold as not just for the rich "designer homes", but as solutions to a new way of living breaking with traditions. I will follow your channel to see how you tackle this problem.

    This is absolutely phenomenal! You nailed technical side, ambience, edits, colour scheme, everything. But even more important, you are giving people food for thought, igniting the spark in minds of people, that has the ability to become a flame of change that will lead to better, functional and sustainable future. Brilliant work.

    This is so interesting and thought-provoking. I’d love to hear your thoughts on how to best utilise small spaces when the inhabitants are old/infirm and therefore don’t have the physicality to do many of the things that are usually employed to maximise the use of a small space.

      @SuWoopSparrow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Theres not a whole lot of point in addressing a minority group until the majority has been addressed. The more "able-bodied" people switch to more sustainable living, the less of an issue it is to support people with special needs by providing more space, amenities, etc. After the bulk gain is had, then it makes sense to continue to optimize for the outliers.

    • @itsmelive
      @itsmelive 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@SuWoopSparrow tbh I disagree. This is a kind of ableist trickle down theory of accessibility that doesn’t seem necessary to me. It’s not like disabled people are waiting for able bodied people to buy an apartment before they do so. They’re both valuable markets

    • @SuWoopSparrow
      @SuWoopSparrow 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@itsmelive If we are looking at optimized spaces for the purposes of minimizing our impact in regards to environment, then it does make more sense to focus on solutions that will work for the majority of people. It takes resources to innovate for these solutions. Of course, if you can create innovations for all groups, then do so, but in reality it seems that it is difficult enough to make progress for able bodied people which also have fewer variables to worry about. There isnt a problem with people having large amounts of space, there is a problem with too many people having large amounts of space. If more people live in smaller spaces, then the impact of those living in larger spaces is mitigated. You will get far more able bodied people to live in smaller spaces than non able bodied even if its just by virtue of there being more able bodied people around, so it makes more sense to focus on them if you are in a position where you have to pick one or the other. This isnt "ableist" or any kind of "-ist" - living in a smaller space however optimized is less than ideal even if you are used to it. Someone in a wheelchair should have the space to move comfortably and not be confined to a 290sqft living situation no matter how optimal that space is. There really is no need to put non able-bodied people in tiny living spaces.

Channels like this inspired me to optimize my living place and give me plenty of ideas.

    Thank you Colin and team, I love your work. I am hoping the support NTS and now Small Footprint gets is indicative of a growing momentum behind intelligently repurposing our urban areas to support our increasing population. As a Melbournian, I love all the changes made in the last 30 years to bring people in; repurposing old heritage buildings into apartments, enlivening laneways, closing streets to cars, widening footpaths, creating space for creativity to thrive. These are all the things that make Melbourne wonderfully liveable and obsessively loveable!. Perhaps one good thing that might come out of the Covid pandemic is that our new found work practices reduces the number of corporate tenants in old heritage buildings, allowing more of these spaces to be repurposed into apartments.

    The subdivided house in North Carlton is absolutely gorgeous! It shows that space is not just dependant on square footage, but perhaps even more so on good design. Unfortunely, with good design being something abandoned by metricon and multiplex etc and their monstrocities on the city fringes, I can see a rapid densification within the current borders of Melbourne coming in the near future. With environmentally and economically concious young people wanting to continue to live within commuting distance to the CBD, in the suburbs where they grew up, foregoing the environmentally unsustainable "quarter acre block Aussie dream" will become the norm. I'm hopeful that instead of buying poor quality crap by metricon 50kms out, young people will start to renovate and rejuvinate all of the townhouses and flats around Melbourne instead. Better for our wallets, better for the environment, better for local architecture and design firms, and last but not least, bad for the developers that are destroying our cities. 😍

    I currently live in Tampa, Florida where homes were built on bigger parcels, and now they’re trying to fit as many homes as possible while losing the beauty of nature surrounding the areas. I do see more urban living happening in the Tampa region of where I live but it is still too expensive for people to live in the city hence why they moving out to the suburbs which then is causing so much traffic. I do wish when these builders that are building these quick homes can put a little bit more thought into the floorplans but sadly that will never happen. This was such a great video thank you!!

    So many great points in this documentary. In Australia we live on our most arable land. A lot of our crops are grown in semi-arid areas that need vast amounts of water to sustain. That in itself is not sustainable. When our daughter wanted to buy property I told her to get an older place which gives more space or co-buy with a friend and then do it up. Many new modern units are built along traditional lines and thinking with minimal storage and therefore seem cramped. The artist's unit is fantastic. Light, open, full of storage and I would delight in living there.

    I think it’s so important to take into account demographics of a city! People in early and later stages of life don’t need single family homes for a variety of reasons: single/no kids at home, affordability, need a manageable space, etc. we have an aging population in many cities that do not need a large home and might WANT a small apartment with all amenities close by. On the other side we have young people who can’t afford nor need single family homes. Maybe they want to live in ADUs, tiny homes, or small apartments. Cities aren’t apportioning housing appropriately for these demographic. In SF, you have a bunch of young singles occupying single family homes for example. Just seems logical to build for these different needs in mind, so I really appreciate you bringing light to these issues!

I wish government and city planning were making this a focus rather than expanding suburbs into rural settings. I feel so sad seeing all those soulless estates. Having lived in a campervan for nearly a year my tiny 1br apartment near the city, parkland and beach in Melbourne seems palatial. It really is important for cities to create those communal spaces and natural parkland so we can all live with less personal space and more community shared space 🙏🏻❤️

    Thank you to the NTS team for producing informative and inspiring content! I agree we need to develop smaller living to accomadate growth. A big hurdle to an apartment in Sydney is strata costs. For essential amenities such as lifts, owners can pay $1,200 per quarter for a 1 bedder on top of council rates and other costs. Financially, it's more economical to buy an old house 1.5 hours away from Sydney. If we want to encourage people into apartments, reduce costs of fees, incentivise sustainability, and in developments provide communal spaces.

The only option to own something is to buy a small apartment. This is exactly what I need: Ideas how to use the small space of my apartment in the best way. Well done NTS on creating this series advocating reusing existing housing stock and creating boundaries to reduce costly urban sprawl, especially from an Aussie perspective. You hit upon many important concepts here, and the biggest was changing mindsets. The biggest issue here in Australia is the expectation of owning a large home, and the pressure to work in high paying and stressful jobs to earn enough to pay the excessive debts of that lifestyle. It is very competitive here, people are trapped in a cycle of consumption and huge debt to pay for those big freestanding houses. Your channel is very important to helping us understand that there is an alternative to the idea that bigger is better. We need to change from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset to get off that cycle. Thanks for all your work.

    This documentary is a fantastic escalation of the regular episodes ❤️When I was a kid I used to doodle house designs - both big and small. Understanding mortgages now… happy with smaller!

    In Toronto, the Conservative Premier is about to embark on $5+ billion highway (which will payback his political donors). I've reposted this on Twitter to the Mayor of Toronto and the Liberal (centre-left party) leaders to watch. Hopefully the people in charge will watch this. Thank you Never Too Small for creating this series and especially, this great introduction, including the estimated cost benefit analysis. Also, thank you to NordVPN & TH-cam for helping sponsor this video.

    i've watched every single video on NTS. i love this new series and great to see some of the people who live in these amazing spaces. even if not for everyone it's so creative and necessary in todays environment. I so so so wish you could come to nyc it would be wonderful to see this kind of thinking applied and showcased more here. we have plenty of tiny apts but its literally just small spaces, i wish i could see more info on the design/thinking and future of where this will go in this city. Please keep up the amazing work, this channel is so thoughtful and keeps me looking forward to the next one!

    This is fantastic! I'm currently studying urban planning and I really believe this is the future. I often tell my loved ones about the dangers of urban sprawl and the necessity for human-scale, intentional design in urban environments. This video summed it up so well, I will definitely be showing this to my friends and family whenever this topic comes up.

    I LOVE this channel and the videos, and am excited for the upcoming episodes of this thought-provoking series. I think the movement to live small in the city, in order to be embraced widely and grow, needs to be paired with people- and community-friendly urban planning, with ample access to clean air, green spaces and schools. Many in my city move out of it into the suburbs in search of these three things, in addition to more affordable housing.
