    Hi Penny and Del - great video. Oh my goodness, metric threads on a Harley part? William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson are probably spinning in their graves! Kidding aside, you made a part that is as attractive as it is functional and you did a wonderful job of scripting, explaining, filming and editing to bring us along in the best way possible. Thanks to both of you for all you do! Take care, dear friends. Be well, ride safe and take care!

    Del I'm not bothered by the strength of the bolts, as much as I would suggest being bothered by the heat of the exhaust. A one or two cm is still very close, considering the hundreds of degrees there, and considering the heat is radiation type, the air doesn't insulate the radiation. doesn't it?
    I would add a radiation shield between them.
    And in any case, it is recommended to measure the temperature on this reservoir tank during the test ride.
    But surely you already know that👍❤

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I do mate, I've used the guidance of the factory here, as the rear brake master cylinder on any modern Dyna and Softail is exactly the same distance from the rear header pipe, it's mounted beside the swing arm pivot low down under the rear collector, in fact, right next to the Cat convertor... so if it works for the factory, I'm guessing it'll probably work for me mate.

      Thanks for the additional information, and indeed now in retrospect, the inside face of the reservoir includes cooling fins. In other words, the factory was also concerned about the issue of over heat.
      7:27
      In the original there is full heat transfer between the reservoir the two spacers and the swing arm.
      In your case, in my opinion, there is no full contact between the DIY bracket and the swing arm, there is an ellen head bolt there that keeps it up. Isn't it?
      7:01
      You need to check that the DIY plate also does not create a change in the air flow on the cooling fins.
      I say: check the temperature, for safety, besides, manufacturers are only human, and brakes are a safety component to be careful with.
      mmm...
      I trust on you, and just share my concerns❤👍

      Air gaps are great, and it is not next to the header… where it is really hot.

    Del my friend, this is purely academic for me. Noticing you used a metric tap & fasteners, are HD's only imperial or are some metric or a mixture over the years ? Here is a story. Some years ago, a now late French (engineer) neighbour was dismantling his ride on mower, it had a Briggs & (scrap-em) Stratton motor. His tools did not fit the motor fasteners, after a chat with me I provided my 70's AF socket set & Allen keys. He was pleased and I wondered why I still have these tools when my Greeves trials bike was sold in 76.
    Regards from a tool hoarder. :)

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes mate, Harleys are a mixture of metric and imperial these days, depends what countries the parts are made in, but these Sato Racing rearset foot controls are made in Japan and they come with M8 threads all round... so I decided to cut the same M8 threads in the bracket to match... it means when removing the item you can use the same tool, nothing more annoying than having to use different tools for the same item don't ya think?!... and I'm like you, I have old imperial and Whitworth tools from my Grandfather and they're very valuable to me.

  • @montaguemonro565

    Love the video mate, in the uk myself with a Bonneville America. Hoping you don't mind a technical question but i'm totally stuck. I followed your video on changing out the rear brake pads and have just today done it myself, i gave the pistons and calliper a good scrub and had to use the tool you used in another previous video to push the pistons in because they weren't possible by hand. The removal and install of the new pads appeared to go flawlessly, however after the install i've noticed that i have no pressure from my rear brake pedal, it wont spring back, it wont close the pistons, and when i try to bleed it using the bleed valve no liquid comes out. The reservoir is just under the upper limit indicator so it appears to have plenty of liquid and i've inspected thoroughly for any leaks and found none... I'm totally stumped mate. Cheers for any advice if you see this!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like you simply have a big gulp of air in the line.. try using a large syringe and forcing brake fluid backwards up through the bleed valve towards the reservoir... suck some fluid out of that hopper first so it doesn't overflow... and once it back fills the hopper... lock off the valve and you should have some pressure at the pedal. !

    Del, this don't happen every day, but I have a tip for you that you must have somehow missed over the years... You held your calipers up and eyeballed the center of the holes to get your measurement. If the two holes are the same size, there's an easier, perfectly accurate way to get that dimension spot-on... Measure from the outside of one hole to the inside of the other hole and Bob's your uncle! Or if it makes it clearer, measure with the calipers on the left side of both holes, or the right side of both holes, or whatever. This only works if both holes are the same diameter.... By the way, I love the message on the whiteboard at the beginning... If you ever decided to go on extended holiday from TH-cam, the hater's website would implode! They'd actually have to use their own head, and apparently, they found out long ago not to place much confidence in such a leaky vessel :) Enjoy the weekend, you two! Edit... If the offset ever DID cause you troubles, you could source a forked yoke to attach the brake rod to the pedal, but I'm with you on it not being a problem.

      Que, hand shaped red mark on forehead from hefty self slap to face because i never thunk of the caliper dodge... you can clearly see im new to this aye.. and that thankfully every day is a school day! Thank you kindly sir, it is truly wonderful to still be able to find out new gems of wisdom from out glorious audience..! and yes, im quite sure the those who play the parasite game and rely on others for their sustenance are more vulnerable than they think! Smashing watching you work as always Dell. I do love the calmness of your videos. I know it’s still some time off, but if I could make a suggestion regarding your next project? Royal Enfield’s are getting a massive following in the UK, they’re no Triumph’s but they are 40% cheaper than something similar from Hinckley. Maybe hardtail chop an interceptor, something a bit out-there. They’re still the biggest sellers in their category so you might get some more viewers? Don’t want to pee off your Harley fans all the same, they might not be that interested. There were a couple of amazing RE customs at Bike Shed this year, and proved very popular. All the best with whatever you chose, I’ll be watching anyway 👍Keep well both.

      Thanks for your input buddy, that's a great idea, I guess with all projects it's about the budget... I've spent a 'medium sized' fortune on the Sportster, so what we can get for it as a finished bike will largely dictate where we can go next! Thank you for your support as always.

    Can't decide whether to call that bike 'Very Metal' or, as it's bound be very loud too, just 'Vivian'. Anyway, apart from the recent galloping plot loss, I was about to mention 'strong brakes on heavy bikes' being a good idea 'when-folk-pull-out-on-you' etc. - then it dawned on me that the archetypal 'Blue rinse in a Nissan' - spells 'Brian'. Simple but definitely effective fabrication skills here Del, great result. 2 questions if I may, in your experience, what (if anything) stops the clamp for the pillar drill from spinning around? Is it just the fact you have a handle on the end that gives you more leverage? And second, any reason for leaving the sandblasted finish? I've recently acquired one myself and want to sandblast EVERYTHING now, but on the Harley, would it not be better black or buffed? Thanks for another amazing piece of content mate.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi James, thanks for your kind words... the hand vice as it's referred to, weighs over a 1kg and is beefy enough to hold still against the spinning drill, plus the drill itself is belt driven and with the correct tension, should the bit suddenly jam, the belts just slip long before the hand vice moves... also am only drilling aluminium, but if drilling thick steel the the hand vice can be bolted to the pillar drill head. As you have a bead blaster yourself now, do some experiments and you'll find, with polishable metals like ally and brass, that a polished finish tarnishs fast, but a blasted finish just stays dull and one single colour... fine for a bike that won't be used in all weathers, just like old engine casings on vintage bikes, a wipe over with some WD40 keeps them looking clean!
