Excellent advice! I would just add that as you age (in my 50s) it takes much longer to reach fitness levels you think you might be able to achieve. Be patient is all I have to say for older runners.
I currently run roughly 50 miles a week, and my weekly long run ranges from 13.1 to 15 miles. Also, once a month, I push my long run further (my last long long run was 18.66) once a week I do speed work, once a week I do a tempo run, and twice a week I do state 2 runs. The tempo and state 2 runs are currently 7.5 miles. I also do a torso limb weight lifting split, which trains the full body twice weekly. Where do you think I should go from here.
I am 74 years old i would like to do full marathon in my life time at present have 10 yrs experience daily runner HM 187 INCLUDING EVENTS PLUS PRACYICE PB 2;32:23 HM DAILY 15 TO 22 KM ON AN AVERAGE 500 KM ESCH MONTH AM I READY FOR FM
Very very cool.. Doing my first marathon in January 2020 and hopefully comrades marathon 2020. I need to start with my strength training. Currently running between 40-50 km a week.
This is the video And information, I’ve been searching for on TH-cam! Thank you! It was so helpful and so encouraging. I’m doing my first marathon in June and have been “pre-prepping” 😊 since July. I’m now up to 25-30 miles and I’ve managed to be injured free because of the gradual increase in mileage and my stretching/foam rolling routine.
I am 74 yrs daily runner morning hrs. From india 15 to 18 km each day. No medical issues I have 25 km longest logged. 150 hm includes practice runs. I would love to do fuĺ marathon 42 km in my life am i ready for my maiden FULL MATATHON?I AM FROM INDIA
I’m 30 years old. I mostly did weight training until five months ago when I incorporated regular running into my routine. I think I have good strength base. I am running my first half marathon in four weeks. Lately, I’ve been running around 25 miles per week, running 3-4 times a week, with one long run during the weekend that span around 13 miles. Some people have said that to reach this stage in mere 5 months sounds risky and injury-prone but I’ve always listened to my body and went along with it. I’m wondering whether I am ready to train for a full marathon. My half marathon timing is currently 2 hours 20 minutes, give/take 5-10 minutes. Should I be working on my pace before I start training for a full marathon?
Should anyone do long runs longer than 150minutes? or should anyone attempt marathon if goal time is over four hours? Personally Oct 2019 I went for my first marathon with sub4.13 time goal and nearly dying to clock 4.12:34 I still feel I should wait for better times, thought I'm okay now as my previous marathon wasn't anything less than pleasant.
I'm doing a half marathon in 2.5 weeks and expect to run it close to or better then 2 hours thanks to my 17 week training program. there is a full marathon in 18 weeks from now so I'm thinking of carrying on with training and running the full then. I would assume this would work pretty good?
My full marathon is in 7 weeks time and I have been running casually since May but more seriously since August after I registered for marathon at a steep discount...
My first Half Marathon is in 2 weeks! So excited and nervous! I recently did my first 10k in 48 minutes! I normally do 8-10k 4 days a week. Too much or just enough?
Nice, congratulations! I recommend some runs be longer than others so you have a dedicated "long run" that's about 20-25% longer than any other run. If you'd like some help, we have a lot of options at strengthrunning.com/coaching/
Nobody can really answer that question! You train for a marathon based on your ability, not based on your goal time... Some runners could run a sub-4 off 20 miles per week. Others need 50+.
Yes I have a question, can you convice Americans to use the term 'PB' instead of 'PR', I think Personal Best sounds more light weight and fun instead of Personal Record which makes me think of going back to the classroom! 😉
I dont get it. Except USA and GB the WHOLE WORLD uses km but still a lot of these training videos use miles. Why limiting your audience to these 2 areas?

How did it go William?
Great advice...follow the process.
Thanks again coach. First marathon here in December (virtual... because 2020) but I am starting to get over 40 miles a week with 8 weeks to go!

Well put together! Thank you!

Do you have a specific strength routine you do consistently after a run? Or do you mix things up a lot?
Good stuff coach. Thanks for the info!

Great advise. Looking forward to my first Marathon next year January 2020. Doing only Half Marathons and Parkruns for now.
Very exciting, keep up the consistent work! And let me know if we can help at Strength Running
Thank you!

Sure, but not at race pace! A 3 hour long slow run that only covers 15-18 miles has its own type of benefits.
Great advice, thank you!
good topic thx

But what about goggins?

How many weeks should I be running at my peak mileage? So I’m wanting to hit 35-40 miles per week before the race. Don’t want to over do it.
Atleast 100 miles/week
What weekly mileage is needed for a sub 4 effort?

@@JasonFitzgerald thanks for the reply. That is a great reminder!
There’s not a certain number. But more than likely unless your running 80+ miles you can always add more. Just do it slowly

We voted and decided to consider it if you'll stop calling underpants "pants" :)
