Fiddle turned out pretty good. If the guy is just learning, the cheaper strings are probably the way to go. after he get to playing a little, he can put better strings on it and take a big jump in tone quality. I would have a hard time leaving that chip-out in the treble side of the lower bout edge, but that would mean more time and money. Your repair looks great and sound isn't bad for cheap strings. I do believe the customer got his money's worth in this repair. The best to you and your family friend.

I have 2 old student fiddles in just about that shape. I took them to an actual violin maker for an opinion. He said I could buy a brand new , equivalent instrument for about 1/2 of what he would have to charge me to fix either of them. I think after seeing this, I will give the repairs a shot myself.
    Thanks!

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Give 'em a shot. If nothing else, you'll learn something on a cheap instrument (even if it's what-not-to-do) !

I read somewhere on the internet, as your customer likely did, that the U.S. importers of the voilins that were imported from Germany and other European makers around the turn of the century would put their labels over those of the actual makers or remove them all together. One of my grandfathers violins had a "Germany" label in it, but a local luthier told me it was definitely a French made violin. Turned out to be worth about $1500 instead of the $500 I was thinking.

Hope you don't mind...but here is my fiddle story
In the late 60's my new wife and I rented a small house in a decent neighborhood of San Diego, next door to us lived the conductor for the San Diego Symphony Orchestra whose instrument was the violin, his wife played piano...they both gave lessons at home.
At the time I had been playing guitar in your typical garage rock band when the Byrds brought out their country influenced "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" album...so I decided to learn to play fiddle so we could do some Byrds cover songs. Vassar Clements and the "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album was my main learning tool.
I mean, how hard could it be right?
Well, after about 3 days of loud screeching around with the fiddle...and not improving...
There was a knock at my door, when I answered it there stood this little old man, my neighbor the conductor.
    Who said...
"If you will put that down right now and not touch it again, I will give you free lessons because I cannot take anymore of that noise."
Needless to say I was so embarrassed, I did put it down...and never picked it up again.
While I have tried a few times later in life to learn, even took a few lessons here in Missouri to no avail....still have 2 fiddles...I think I have given up for the overall betterment of mankind.

The difference between a fiddle and a violin is what is played on them, and how they are played.

Thought I'd assist on the dilemma you had on reading the label. It reads Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis, which is Latin for Antonio Stradivari of Cremona.
You certainly know how to turn a wreck into a going concern. Thanks again for such excellent videos.

You use Tightbond where a lot of other luthiers use hide glue. My understanding of hide glue is that one of it's advantages is that you can melt it to remove it. Can you do the same with Tightbond? I've seen you put back on guitars with Tightbond, in the future will you be able to remove them without doing damage?
