Hey guys thanks heaps for all the feedback, it’s all welcome even the constructive criticism as that’s the best way to learn and grow. I’m noticing quite a few people in the comment section are not too happy with two words I got wrong in this video them being “Winthorpe” and “Pauper”. All I can say is when I make a video it’s never my intention to annoy anyone or ruin their day, it’s only my goal to try and entertain so apologies to those who were left a little annoyed. My difficulty is when I’m reading off a script and see a word I’m not too familiar with, even if I know the name by spoken sound, when I’m reading it my brain still sometimes gets scrambled and confused with pronouncing the words. I would put this down to my autism but that would be a cop out, so I’m going to work harder to familiarise my words from now on and if I still struggle then I just won’t use the words, for example instead of getting a character’s name wrong I’ll just say “Dan Akroyd’s character” as not to upset anyone or coming off looking silly. Thanks heaps for your time and patients and I’ll do better in the future. Stay fresh and the best is still to come :)
Good man Minty...., I concur with some of the criticisms of the factual content but at the end of the day your producing something that 99.9% of the population either can't or can't be arsed to do, so do as Bruce Lee says “Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.”. Also, just fact checked the Academy award bit for JLC. It was actually a British Academy Award (apols if someone else has already raised this). JLC and Denholm Elliott both got one, which is pretty amazing. Keep up the good work

So divide that for 2 is a sort of way to say "both this guys will divide by themself a great power or a great fortune/ get a powerful position one by one and vicecersa" and yeah is basically what happens in the movie
It's a shame that Akroyd and Murphy haven't teamed up on another film, and surprising since this was a huge hit. One thing that film and muppet fans will notice is that the officer who "finds" the angel dust while doing an inventory of Akroyd's belongings is Frank Oz, a muppeteer, a competent director in his own right, and the voice of Yoda, Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear, and a host of others.
When we'd rent the VHS version of Trading Places back in the 80's, the parts where JLC takes her top off was always staticky from all the times it got paused and rewound.
As much I love the Gene Wilder/Richard Pryor team-ups, I'm glad it was Dan Akroyd and Eddie Murphy who were cast in the lead roles. They gave the film more of a fresh, spontaneous, Saturday Night Live feel.
It wasn’t the stock market. It was a Comex ring at the commodity markets at 4 World Trade. There were no extras, most of the runners and brokers gladly came back on weekend for filming.
To be more accurate, it was filmed at COMEX, the Commodities Exchange at 4 World Trade Center (which still stands). It was not filmed at the "stock exchange", as it deals in commodities and not stocks. In 2006 COMEX was folded into the NYSE, and the "pit" was permanently closed in 2016 as most exchanges are now done electronically.
In that scene at the end of the movie on the beach and yacht, both guys are wearing sweaters in the tropics but Jamie is in a bikini. Always struck me as weird. Oh yeah, and Coleman is wearing a suit, on the beach, in the tropics; sweaters and a suit. Nonetheless, I love this movie and watch every year.
Just let you know where they say that looking Good feeling good that part in the Virgin islands has really bad Sand fleas that will eat you alive so that's why locals and other peaple are not around in that area of the island

Great job, Minty. Love all your vids! However, with this one, you make a bit of a larger error. Dan Ackroyd was not a stock trader, nor were stock exchanges used. He was in fact, a commodities trader, and they were trading commodity futures on OJ. These are totally different from trading stocks, as commodities trading (before they went totally computerized in the late 90s which meant floor trading, as seen in the movie, became irrelevant) were the chaotic scenes shown in the movies (I remember watching them back in the day...fun to watch!. Stock trading is a lot more calm compared to commodities. It would've been interesting to have researched how much DA and EM's characters made, as I think it was in the hundreds of millions. Keep up the great work, mate!

My youngest was born in Frankston hospital when I was in the navy, it’s one of those places that you never forget haha A few of the cars in the first mad max film were purchased from a dealership in that town so that’s pretty cool
If you're wondering how the final scene worked out, here's a synopsis; ( A minor aside; In the movie at the beginning of this scene, the boys are seen walking in front of the World Trade Center, with the twin towers off their right shoulders. This would mean they were walking East, toward Wall Street and the NY Stock Exchange. The scene to follow takes place ostensibly in the New York Mercantile Exchange where commodities are traded, which is located on the Hudson River, basically behind them. In other words, the movie shows them walking the wrong way, away from the building which houses the trading floor!) So here's the gist; The Duke Brothers thought they had information that the Orange harvest was going to be slim, and when that would be announced, the price would spike - simple law of supply and demand. So they tell their "Pit Trader" to BUY all the FCOJ he can right from the opening bell, thinking that they were going to be able to buy OJ at a lower price initially and after the news report from the Agriculture Department broke, they would have a large position at a lower than market price. Essentially, they were trying to "Corner the Market" by buying up as many contracts as their trader could. This created a buying frenzy, as the rest of the pit wants to follow the lead of such a well known willing buyer (Bearing in mind the Duke Brothers own a very large commodities trading brokerage. What they do affects everyone else). This causes the price to rise. Simple supply and demand; Lots of buyers, only a few sellers, price rises. With each buy order, the Duke brothers are laying out real cash from their own account, so they are dependent on the information they have being correct and the price of each contract continue to go up........ BUT....we know it ISN'T correct, and so do Lewis and Billy Ray. So they wait.....and Billy Ray gets anxious....and they wait....until.... Lewis sees the price get to the level he wants and shouts out that he is selling April contracts at "142!" Now there is a new seller and the whole pit goes nuts. But do Lewis and Billy Ray actually OWN the FCOJ contracts they are selling? No. They don't. They are "Selling Short" meaning they are selling that which they do not own, but can, or will either borrow from someone else temporarily (which can actually happen when you sell short on the stock market) or the sale is covered before the end of the trading day via a "buy to cover". With each short sale they make, they are padding their account. Each and every sale is real dollars to them, even though they don't own a thing yet. The price begins to fall. More sellers than buyers now, so the law stated above is reversed. They want to sell as much as they can as fast as they can because they know the crop report is going to be announced soon and they want as much cash as they can possibly gather because they KNOW the truth and it is the opposite of what the Duke brothers think. This is where the Duke Brothers realize "That's not right" and see our heroes in the pit, selling like mad. They realize the info on the crop report is wrong and hurry down to the pit to get their trader to stop buying and start selling. But alas, he is not successful. So the announcement comes and the pit goes silent as they all watch the television. The INSTANT the agriculture rep says "The cold winter has apparently not affected the orange harvest" the pit goes wild again because everyone that had bought at high prices knows now that those prices were too high and they have to unload them or they will have bought FCOJ for way more than market value. So a selling frenzy ensues. Lewis and Billy Ray fold their arms. They're done selling. The price plummets, because everyone is trying to sell overpriced contracts and there are virtually zero buyers. Lewis watches the price fall to a point he likes (around 46 or so) and says "Buy em'" and now they are one of the only traders in the pit willing to buy what everyone else is desperate to sell. The price plummets even more all to their advantage. BTW, This is where the money Ophelia and Coleman gave them comes into play, because even though they have all the cash from the short sales from before, now they have the extra cash the other two gave them to buy even more contracts. A side note pointed out on one blog I read long ago; In order to really make this hurt the Dukes, at this point the boys would SPECIFICALLY AND PURPOSEFULLY NOT BUY from the Duke's trader or the Dukes themselves. They want to stick the Dukes with a LOT of overpriced contracts, so the entire time they are buying, they are ignoring the Dukes. And they did. The boys basically did what the Dukes thought they were going to do; Corner the FCOJ market. The closing bell rings (BTW This was ostensibly an entire trading day of say, 6 hours or so, much longer than the 5 minutes the scene takes) and the boys look up at the board, showing the closing price of 29. They started selling short at 142. The difference is all profit to them. And then the crap hits the air circulation device! "Margin call, gentlemen. Why you can't expect... You know the rules. All accounts to be settled at the end of the day's trading, without exception. You know perfectly well we don't have three hundred ninety four million dollars in cash! I'm sorry, boys. Put the Duke brothers' seats on the exchange up for sale at once, Seize all assets of Duke & Duke Commodity Brokers, as well as all personal holdings of Randolph and Mortimer Duke..... We're ruined!" If one were to assume all the losses stated by Randolph ($394,000,000) went to the boys, and that's a good bet and more, adjusted for inflation, $394 mil from 1983 to today comes out to around a billion, according to an inflation calculator you can easily Google. There are several real world issues with this entire scenario of course, the least of which is that it could never happen today because of trading curbs and likely couldn't have back in 1983 either. But it's a fun scene, and one of my all time favorite movies.
The Boys manage to get that ball rolling, so when the bottom drops out and the price plummets, they sit back as that price will be low enough to profit on.
...Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor are one of the all-time great comedy duos... ...right up there with Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, and even (for those of you who remember "The Apple Dumpling Gang") Don Knotts and Tim Conway...
Pryor was funnier than Eddie Murphy and basically was a mentor for every black comedian that came since. Murphy had a better stage presence which makes him the better actor, but he still can't lay a finger on Pryor's stand up. The closest thing to Richard Pryor these days is Dave Chappell.
#2 had bad info. We NEVER were on the Comex floor during trading. NEVER. Not permitted since the 30's when a movie did that and trading stopped. We got the Comex on a Saturday and Sunday. We used real floor traders, clerks, runners who worked those jobs during the trading week and knew enough to act like crazed brokers as our background artists. We wrapped on Sunday noon. Two days work in 1.5 days! The only time we were at the Comex during trading was AT THE END OF TRADING. When they let us look out from the viewing gallery. The floor all looked up to see the movie stars. That's why the SEC and the trading floors don't let movies on the floor during trading. Everything stops. Otherwise very good. Jamie was a wonderful person, in addition to looking like a million bucks. Danny was a gem as always and Eddie was still nice and young.
Honestly, Akroyd is as good as anyone in that movie. The plot of the movie was contingent on ‘Louis Winthorpe III’ *selling us* on both ends of his ‘Riches to rags to riches’ tale. The greatest testament as to his success is in how popular it was and the fact it’s still stands up today.
Love this movie. One of my favorite 80's Dan Aykroyd movies along with Ghostbusters and My Stepmother Is an Alien, The Great Outdoors, Dragnet and many more. And among my favorite 80's Eddie Murphy movies along with Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2 and The Golden Child, 48 Hours and many more.

#11 Two puppeteers from The Jim Henson Company have supporting roles. Frank Oz (who appears in nearly every Landis film) as a Corrupt Cop , and Richard Hunt as Wilson, the Dukes personal trader. Also Jamie Lee won a BAFTA award not an Academy Award.
I would have loved to see that version as well. Wilder and Pryor eventually made a 3rd movie together in '89, See No Evil, Hear No Evil, love this movie too❤
Funny how you mentioned that the movie had an ‘old fashioned’ 1930’s/40’s screwball comedy feel about it, especially given that Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche were cast as the Duke brothers as they had both appeared in many comedy movies in that era.

To tell the truth, although it was one of the first VHS movies I bought, I never watched that copy and have only seen it 3-4 times on TV. But as the French say, _"Chacun à son goût."_

I love this movie. I have it on DVD. I love the parts when Ophelia, Billy Ray, and Louis are on the train in their wacky disguises trying to fool Clarence Beaker . And the part where Winthrop is dressed up like Santa Claus. That part still makes me LOL 😂😅. Paul Gleason was also in the movie he played Clarence Beaker And there was brief Cameos from Al Franklin who was a baggage handler on the train. and Jim Belushi played Harvey a partygoer on the train. This movie's still makes me LOL 😂😅

Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder were close to being paired together in “Blazing Saddles” too. I saw Silver Streak when I was a kid and loved it. Trading Places is one of my all-time favorites and might have been even better with Pryor and Wilder.
You forgot to mention that "trading places" is an actual holiday tradition in England! It used to be, that on Boxing Day every year, wealthy citizens and their servant-staff would "trade places" for one day to honor the holiday! =)

To be more accurate, it was filmed at COMEX, the Commodities Exchange at 4 World Trade Center (which still stands). It was not filmed at the "stock exchange", as it deals in commodities and not stocks. In 2006 COMEX was folded into the NYSE, and the "pit" was permanently closed in 2016 as most exchanges are now done electronically.
What makes movies like these so great is that they're already made, because if they tried making this today it wouldn't fly. I love this movie

Great job, Minty. Love all your vids! However, with this one, you make a bit of a larger error. Dan Ackroyd was not a stock trader, nor were stock exchanges used. He was in fact, a commodities trader, and they were trading commodity futures on OJ. These are totally different from trading stocks, as commodities trading (before they went totally computerized in the late 90s which meant floor trading, as seen in the movie, became irrelevant) were the chaotic scenes shown in the movies (I remember watching them back in the day...fun to watch!. Stock trading is a lot more calm compared to commodities.
It would've been interesting to have researched how much DA and EM's characters made, as I think it was in the hundreds of millions.

If you're wondering how the final scene worked out, here's a synopsis;
( A minor aside; In the movie at the beginning of this scene, the boys are seen walking in front of the World Trade Center, with the twin towers off their right shoulders. This would mean they were walking East, toward Wall Street and the NY Stock Exchange. The scene to follow takes place ostensibly in the New York Mercantile Exchange where commodities are traded, which is located on the Hudson River, basically behind them. In other words, the movie shows them walking the wrong way, away from the building which houses the trading floor!)
So here's the gist;
The Duke Brothers thought they had information that the Orange harvest was going to be slim, and when that would be announced, the price would spike - simple law of supply and demand.
So they tell their "Pit Trader" to BUY all the FCOJ he can right from the opening bell, thinking that they were going to be able to buy OJ at a lower price initially and after the news report from the Agriculture Department broke, they would have a large position at a lower than market price.
Essentially, they were trying to "Corner the Market" by buying up as many contracts as their trader could. This created a buying frenzy, as the rest of the pit wants to follow the lead of such a well known willing buyer (Bearing in mind the Duke Brothers own a very large commodities trading brokerage. What they do affects everyone else). This causes the price to rise. Simple supply and demand; Lots of buyers, only a few sellers, price rises.
With each buy order, the Duke brothers are laying out real cash from their own account, so they are dependent on the information they have being correct and the price of each contract continue to go up........
BUT....we know it ISN'T correct, and so do Lewis and Billy Ray.
So they wait.....and Billy Ray gets anxious....and they wait....until....
Lewis sees the price get to the level he wants and shouts out that he is selling April contracts at "142!"
Now there is a new seller and the whole pit goes nuts. But do Lewis and Billy Ray actually OWN the FCOJ contracts they are selling? No. They don't. They are "Selling Short" meaning they are selling that which they do not own, but can, or will either borrow from someone else temporarily (which can actually happen when you sell short on the stock market) or the sale is covered before the end of the trading day via a "buy to cover".
With each short sale they make, they are padding their account. Each and every sale is real dollars to them, even though they don't own a thing yet.
The price begins to fall. More sellers than buyers now, so the law stated above is reversed. They want to sell as much as they can as fast as they can because they know the crop report is going to be announced soon and they want as much cash as they can possibly gather because they KNOW the truth and it is the opposite of what the Duke brothers think. This is where the Duke Brothers realize "That's not right" and see our heroes in the pit, selling like mad. They realize the info on the crop report is wrong and hurry down to the pit to get their trader to stop buying and start selling. But alas, he is not successful.
So the announcement comes and the pit goes silent as they all watch the television.
The INSTANT the agriculture rep says "The cold winter has apparently not affected the orange harvest" the pit goes wild again because everyone that had bought at high prices knows now that those prices were too high and they have to unload them or they will have bought FCOJ for way more than market value.
So a selling frenzy ensues. Lewis and Billy Ray fold their arms. They're done selling. The price plummets, because everyone is trying to sell overpriced contracts and there are virtually zero buyers. Lewis watches the price fall to a point he likes (around 46 or so) and says "Buy em'" and now they are one of the only traders in the pit willing to buy what everyone else is desperate to sell.
The price plummets even more all to their advantage. BTW, This is where the money Ophelia and Coleman gave them comes into play, because even though they have all the cash from the short sales from before, now they have the extra cash the other two gave them to buy even more contracts.
A side note pointed out on one blog I read long ago;
In order to really make this hurt the Dukes, at this point the boys would SPECIFICALLY AND PURPOSEFULLY NOT BUY from the Duke's trader or the Dukes themselves. They want to stick the Dukes with a LOT of overpriced contracts, so the entire time they are buying, they are ignoring the Dukes.
And they did. The boys basically did what the Dukes thought they were going to do; Corner the FCOJ market.
The closing bell rings (BTW This was ostensibly an entire trading day of say, 6 hours or so, much longer than the 5 minutes the scene takes) and the boys look up at the board, showing the closing price of 29. They started selling short at 142. The difference is all profit to them.
And then the crap hits the air circulation device!
"Margin call, gentlemen.
Why you can't expect...
You know the rules. All accounts to be settled at the end of the day's trading, without exception.
You know perfectly well we don't have three hundred ninety four million dollars in cash!
I'm sorry, boys. Put the Duke brothers' seats on the exchange up for sale at once, Seize all assets of Duke & Duke Commodity Brokers, as well as all personal holdings of Randolph and Mortimer Duke.....
We're ruined!"
If one were to assume all the losses stated by Randolph ($394,000,000) went to the boys, and that's a good bet and more, adjusted for inflation, $394 mil from 1983 to today comes out to around a billion, according to an inflation calculator you can easily Google.
There are several real world issues with this entire scenario of course, the least of which is that it could never happen today because of trading curbs and likely couldn't have back in 1983 either.
But it's a fun scene, and one of my all time favorite movies.

Pryor was funnier than Eddie Murphy and basically was a mentor for every black comedian that came since. Murphy had a better stage presence which makes him the better actor, but he still can't lay a finger on Pryor's stand up. The closest thing to Richard Pryor these days is Dave Chappell.
#2 had bad info. We NEVER were on the Comex floor during trading. NEVER. Not permitted since the 30's when a movie did that and trading stopped. We got the Comex on a Saturday and Sunday. We used real floor traders, clerks, runners who worked those jobs during the trading week and knew enough to act like crazed brokers as our background artists. We wrapped on Sunday noon. Two days work in 1.5 days! The only time we were at the Comex during trading was AT THE END OF TRADING. When they let us look out from the viewing gallery. The floor all looked up to see the movie stars. That's why the SEC and the trading floors don't let movies on the floor during trading. Everything stops. Otherwise very good. Jamie was a wonderful person, in addition to looking like a million bucks. Danny was a gem as always and Eddie was still nice and young.

Honestly, Akroyd is as good as anyone in that movie. The plot of the movie was contingent on ‘Louis Winthorpe III’ *selling us* on both ends of his ‘Riches to rags to riches’ tale.
The greatest testament as to his success is in how popular it was and the fact it’s still stands up today.

Never knew this movie was intended for Pryor/Wilder but it makes perfect sense. I could totally see them doing the parts of Valentine and Winthorpe.

And the part where Winthrop is dressed up like Santa Claus. That part still makes me LOL 😂😅. Paul Gleason was also in the movie he played Clarence Beaker And there was brief Cameos from Al Franklin who was a baggage handler on the train. and Jim Belushi played Harvey a partygoer on the train. Another little fact, Dan wanted Eddie to play Winston in Ghostbusters but Eddie had already signed up for Beverly Hills Cop and had to turn it down. And because of that we got Ernie Hudson in the role.
