    I'm an Aussie and a few years back a couple of mates and I bought a '77 Buick Estate wagon (virtually identical to this Olds) for $900 in LA and then travelled 8500 miles across and around the U.S in it. We only changed the oil,oil filter and air filter,put one missing hubcap on it and it never missed a beat for the duration of our trip around your beautiful country. It was a 350 by the way. Cheers from Western Australia and Dylan love your channel mate! 🍻🇦🇺🇺🇸😎

    I had a 84 delta 88 with a 307. paid 100.00 for it . Had a blown head gasket . tore it down ripped every piece of computer garbage out of it. ripped the computer out from the dash and eliminated any wire for it. Oldsmobiles were the best of the GM lineup of cars. Put together like Cadillacs and priced just a little more than loaded Pontiacs. They were probably the best of all American cars for their value. Very few issues with Oldsmobile. You scored big!

    • @ThunderAppeal
      @ThunderAppeal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Youre joking, right?
      By the time that 'Oldsmobile' was built it was just a standard run of the mill GM car, they were all built the same by that point because they were all rolling off the same assembly line from the same factory.
      They were all the same shit boxes.

    • @ThunderAppeal
      @ThunderAppeal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I dont.
      They were pieces of shit coming off the assembly line.
      I used to work on them in the 80s when I was a kid.
      Worked in a family repair shop.
      I was always a loyal American car owner, but putting them side by side next to a Japanese car back in the day, one can easily see why the Japanese ate American car makers lunch. All American makers chose to do was complain and complain and complain as their customer base was dying off. The newer customer base who were coming on board wanted to remain loyal but the US makers insisted on building garbage. The management of the makers chose to blame the Unions when instead it was the idiot entitled engineers who were designing garbage from the start.
      Garbage, garbage upon more garbage and then garbage some more.
      The only thing these pieces of shit were good for was Smash Up Derbies which was a tragic waste of resources.
      The US would have been better off if GM, FoMoCo, Mopar all went under.
      Fuck them.

      SUVs started getting introduced to Europe in the 90's as far as I remember but they didn't take off until the late 2000s really. They were seen as oversized, gas guzzling gimmicks which are less practical for hauling than station wagons and less useful for off-roading as actual off-road trucks and cars.

Of course mom and dad knew we were crawling around in the back, but times were different back then. Seatbelts weren't a law - just recommended. You can EASILY get 2 Great Danes in the back (rear seat folded down, of course) - we did it before. That's a great find you got. Best part about your wagon is - you don't need to be a ding-dang computer wiz to work on the engine! Station wagons sadly have disappeared pretty much due to minivans and SUV taking over. I've been wanting to get a wagon - nice, big, aircraft carrier size like yours (not a compact one - ugh 😖 )! Thanks for sharing your find. Truly a blast from the past! 😎

The missing woodgrain on the tailgate makes me think of a local flooring company's Cruze with a woodgrain "wrap" over part of the body - that may be more easily available than the Dynok the Olds came with, and being separated from the "wood" sides by the tail lights, an inexact match wouldn't be obvious.

    My God do I remember struggling to get those 307s through emission tests.. Gauge package in that 1 is kinda rare. Since it's been sitting for so long, getting the lifters to pump back up is gonna take a while, so bear in mind your misfire may not be ignition related, but possibly. I had a 78 Gutless with the 260 that had been sitting for 14 yrs, and it took 2 oil drain and refills with 10w40 before all the lifters came to life and she finally quieted down. I put a timing chain in that 1 and sold it for $1000.00. Those old B body based GMs are super cheap to fix and pretty easy to work on. If you want to wake up that 307, put a good chain in it, advance the ign. timing a couple of degrees, get rid of the EGR and air pump. ditch the factory cat and free up the rest of the exhaust system. You can leave the factory 3 C computer system in it, and still make some low end power.. not alot, but enough to do a brake torque. LOL Be sure that the Rochester actually opens the secondaries, as the linkage tends to bend at the carb, and you end up with a 2bbl...

    77-80, models have 403, 350 rocket powered by Oldsmobile!! Exact same wagon though. Oh yeah, you get a sturdier transmission too. THM 350. Best of these GM wagons in my opinion is 77-78- 400 4Bbl Pontiac Catalina, Or Bonneville full size wagons. When u fold down all seats flat, you can fit 4x8 sheets of plywood in, and shut tailgate!!! Yes really! These were pretty versatile wagons.

    That light indicator is fiber optic. You can get it brighter if you clean it up at the end - it's on the center of the headlight plug. You also might want to leave that trans in drive and not overdrive until you're over 40mph. They had a nasty habit of taking off in 2nd and frying the trans because of it. Also, that electronic quadrajet has a mixture control solenoid that'll make all kinds of noise, but if it works... Cool car!

      Hogwash. Changing it doesn't do that much if you aren't still going to prime the bearings by spinning the pump down the dizzy hole. I'd recommend checking the oil for lubricity and just spinning the pump a bit to pre-lube some parts after a longterm sit. Change the oil when you know you have a runner.

    Sweet ride. I do miss my 86 Caprice Estate wagon. Had a 307 Y block and a TH200R4 and COLD A$$ air with what they used to call the "ball chillers" (vents at the bottom of the dash pointed directly toward the crotch). After bad luck with 1 questionable engine replacement shop and a mechanic that wouldn't listen to me (he eventually told me he was a fuel injection guy, not a carburetor guy), I finally gave it up for an Intrepid.
    Anyway, with a rebuilt engine and a tune on the Carter Thermoquad, she'd get tire in 1st and 2nd.
    If it has a Thermoquad, don't junk it. A little cleaning and maybe a rebuild will keep that bad boy singing. I took mine on a trip from PA to southern Texas and back, fully loaded with 7 people and a roof rack full, and still got 20 mpg on the tired original engine. Also got about 400 mpq of oil!
    Yep, nothing like a land yacht to travel the country.

    I love woodgrain station wagons, and have had several. Only one I have now is a 1973 Pinto Squire. Copper brown paint, and wide almost white plastic strips between the paint and woodgrain. Decent ones are getting hard to find. And even is they look good, you can bet that every single piece of rubber on the whole car is rotted. I have always been more attracted to more ordinary old cars than expensive high dollar classics, which is good, because I can't afford those. As long as it has a carburetor I'm ok with it.

  • @AlexanderCrump
    @AlexanderCrump 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a real nice loaded Custom Cruiser you got there. It has the rare full gauge package, cornering lamps, fiber optic lamp monitors on the front fenders (only Cadillac, Olds and Buick used these, not Chevy or Pontiac), the automatic climate system, the OD 4-speed tranny (that may have been standard by '84, not sure). My guess is it also has the optional tow package with different drive ratio and heavy duty suspension. I don't think these came with any optional upholstery nicer than what you have (though Buick did offer nicer velour and leather options). I do hope this thing gets restored to its original glory. These were iconic vehicles from this era. The GM B-body wagons and the Ford Panthers are among my favorites of all time.

    I like them pre-1975 so they don't have all the smog crap on them. Give this a basic tune up, change the oil, replace the coolant, it should be good to go for a long time. There is a coolant that never needs to be replaced, and won't boil over, but to make sure, replace all the hoses and such too. They have to be about shot by now. The stuff is called waterless coolant, you have to completely remove all water from the system, then the waterless coolant will replace it, and NEVER needs to be replaces or anything. For cars you intend to keep a long time, it's a good way to go.. the waterless does NOT corrode anything. The system will stay clean forever, if you flush it well before you start. Jay Leno's garage has a vid on it. Great stuff for cars you intend to keep. If you install it in a new car, and keep that car 20 years, it's still guaranteed to last at least as long as the car does. When the car finally dies (it gets longer life because of no corrosion) some drain it out and put it in something else, it lasts that long. I've used it on some things in the past, and it lives up to the hype. In fact once I get the hoses and stuff replaced on my current set of wheels, I'm going to use it in that. it's not cheap, it's like 40 a gallon, but when you figure you never have to replace it, it's cheap in the long run, and saves wear and tear on your engine that could cost way more than that to fis.

    That's good start to a pretty cool project. IF I were you i'd just clean it up find a new door for the back and then repaint it. My son just bought a 84 Buick Lesabre Wagon for $600 and it was pretty much the same way as this one. The interior was immacculate and didn't need anything but a good clean-up but the body needs painted, being out here in the Southwest (Northwestern Arizona) most cars that are 5 years or older needs a paint job. His is White with Tan Interior but He's going to repaint it Red and do redo the wood grain with contact paper, he's already pulled the hubcaps and repainted the steel wheels and put some cheap chrome center caps on it, He's not going to put a bunch of money into it, just clean it up repaint the car and clean up and repaint the 307 engine and make it look decent to daily drive and for a cruise-in/cars and coffee car. No sense in putting alot of money into it just to drive it.
