"You know, I probably should get some therapy, but it'd probably fuck up my record sales..."
-- Trent Reznor, Rolling Stone
Yeah that sounds like Bukowski with bluebird.
Reznor's self-awareness of being an "angsty rock musician" has produced a lot of great quotes.
I feel bad for loving the music a lot of these artists were on heavy drugs while making, but Trent gave us Downward Spiral and The Fragile, Bowie was on coke for most of his peak period. Would their output have been as good if they weren’t on drugs?
🍏
@@bencarlson4300 Note that drug problems have caused some musicians to become unable to produce much of anything, or to produce some not-very-good material. See Brian Wilson; Syd Barrett; Hole's tour for "Live Through This;" Doug Hopkins from The Gin Blossoms wrote hits about his alcoholism, but that was all he could do; Shane MacGowan; and so on.
What a nice group of young men

They were so fucked up here yet played so flawlessly. A sign of true musicianship
Nah ...... Trent wasn't an abuser. He was more than likely completely sober.
Nah he abused coke and alcohol around the but I agree he’s likely sober here or maybe just buzzed at most.
@@johnstoner666 nah man, they were all tripping. Read about it. Someone gave em acid.
@@DisasterTheoryX Trent was an absolute mess in the 90's. The Downward Spiral as an album was written as a way for him to cope with his addictions and newfound fame, and he was forced into rehab after overdosing in '04. He's been clean ever since then, but it took alot to get him to where he is today.

This is the best industrial rock song I've ever heard.
Ode todeodorant meh...if you think this is good you should hear Willie Nelson's version
there is no possible way, Willie makes a better industrial version of this song
Aaron Pannell I think you should consult with the dude who commented before you
You should listen to Prong...NIN learned from Prong..
Definitely one of the best industrial songs ive heard
My parents were there and every time they mention woodstock they always say how amazing NIN was. I wish i went
You might have been there bro, depending on your age, never leave out the possibility that this song is how you were conceived LOL.
I bet your mam is awesome. And hot.
I worked at the event. 22 years old with an all access pass. This performance sealed my love for NIN. Stood side stage for their set as well as Metallica. Wow just wow.
I wish I went too
@@robertyoung1843 that’s awesome!!!! Could you please tell me more by text or phone? Sry haha I just would LOVE to know more
I just love how layered this song is.
What I love is how this is essentially the “the four stages of masturbation” meme in song format.
@@mitchvechart7164 that is super accurate actually. The depression hits hard at the end with the motif.

I can’t hear any sex noises
If they're into public sex then... yea
Public sex is not uncommon to see on the ol hub
gotta admit, the NIN guys when they composed this ....they had a forumla that is VERY difficult to replicate....there are many things so unique to this song
the tone of the bass
the tone of the drumset
the layers of piano effects
And Trent's voice of course
And best of all....as specific as the song is...they still managed to pull it off live... with most if not all of the sounds replicated on stage by live players.
Now that's talent
Veemon digimon Only one man composed, wrote, produced and recorded this song tho ahhahaa
I'm still wondering how did they manage to replicate all the sound in those MIDI keyboards without using any computers at the time
Jhonny Cage X Rage same. Idk how are the tone banks back then and how it was accurate sounding. If no tone banks was used, then they really had a great memory to remember it.
I think they sampled the stuff. I know for sure that piano at the end was sampled and that creepy looped part too. I don't know about other stuff but my guess is they sampled the other stuff too. @@jhonnycagexrage7458

Easy said, just play 4 low notes on the low E string and than move a string down and snap fret 1 and 2 and you’ll get the same sound just play aggressive though to get the sound like he did
Trent is really inspirational musically. The level of complexity in mixing various genres together and evolving techno from 80s cheese to 90s ecstasy is a huge accomplishment.
I think you probably haven't heard much of what you call "techno". There are literally hundreds if not thousands of amazing records from the 80's and 90's that Trent Reznor had nothing to do with their evolution. I've liked NIN since 1991 but you fan boys place far too much unwarranted significance to Trent Reznor.
@@Abruzzo333 Dude A this was 4 years ago, get a life B All people who lived through those eras that I've talked to, in real life, described the scene as such. I feel like I'm watching mad max fury road in concert version.
Omg Hope someone makes a video of fury road clips with this song. The perfection
Oh Jesus you should see Rammstein it’s exactly fury road in concert version
There is a story to this performance. These madmen fell out of the bus out of their heads on acid and immediately began mud wrestling. They were dragged onto stage in the nick of time to start playing. Suffice it to say, the acid still had a firm grip. The boys went full Santana, and this epic video keeps the legend alive to this day.
Gotta admit, though: the bridge sounds like one of those "shreds" videos, but I still love it.
@@ohdenitto and Trent always said that they did this simply for the money to help with their current Downward Spiral tour at the time and that they didn't like this performance. I think he knows now though that this has become their most legendary gig ever. So badass and HOT, good lawd, they got to mud wrestle before going on stage, the performance was great and Trent still complained about how terrible they were, such were the standards back in the day.
Perfectionists like Trent r never really satisfied. Always gotta top themselves.
That’s Corn Starch and Chocolate syrup! Trent was told by George Romero that if he mixed the two together and put it on him it would be the ultimate goth look. So before every concert in the 90s Trent put it on his face and then brought it out during the first song and slung it into the crowd so everyone would look fucking sick

Definitely mine. The distortion when the chorus kicks in and the fact that the bass in the chorus is so fucking loud just pushes it over the edge.

Judging by your profile pic, you have VERY good taste in music.

i don’t say this legitimately often, but this actually ruined the studio version for me. everything just doesn’t hit the same, the distorted vocals, the bass tone, just the overall energy. this one is just on a whole different level

The fact NIN could sound almost spot on from album is crazy and insanely impressive . All the different sounds tones instruments ( not going to pretend I know what I'm talkin about ) but I know attempting to replicate that style of Music Live must be ridiculously hard.
