The missing piece of information is he already had a nice fan base and industry connections when he went broke. The music game is tricky. It's not even about how good your music is. Thousands of artist release music every week now...some of them will never be heard. You have to get a good manager to take you directly to the oppurtinities because fan base is a myth. But If you are blessed to have fans that buy your stuff and come to your shows...you can eat good in music. Followers don't count if they are not spending money with you.

Having 50k followers may equal 500 record sales …and that’s on the high end
