  • UVB lighting is incredibly important for our chameleons and sadly there’s a lot of incorrect information out there regarding the topic! In this video I discuss why our chameleons need UVB and what the best one is for them!

    Thanks! Here’s a little bit about my veiled Chameleon’s care:
    She currently has a 2x4x4 custom built screen enclosure, with a mixture of live and fake plants and lots of different vines and branches to provide variety and enrichment. She also has a dig box for laying eggs.
    I have the 48 inch repti-sun 10.0 UVB and supplement with calcium without D3 every feeding and vitamin with D3 every 2 weeks. I change the UVB bulb out every 6 months to make sure that my chameleon gets the right amount of UVB! My baby laid 31 beautiful and healthy eggs (infertile of course) but never the less she was able to lay the clutch with only a little bit of help in my end (she got a bit dehydrated and hungry during the process because she decided to lay in feeding day) I use a 75 watt bulb from a local hardware store and it keeps the basking temperature nice and warm ( I need to order batteries for the thermometer because the old one broke and I don’t think was that accurate). I mist my Chameleon’s cage twice a day- more so at night because they need a humidity boost at night and less on the morning. My humidity stays around 30-50% during the day and up at his basking/ living area and 60-80% in his live planted area. I also syringe feed water and use a dripper to provide her with water. I feed her every 3-4 days and provide her with a variety of crickets, mealworms, super worms, waxworms, and will soon be adding dubia’s. I also occasionally feed some lettuce and plan on adding more variety to my Chameleon’s diet once I find an online store that I like. Right now I’m a bit limited as I currently get my feeders from pet supplies plus and petco but soon hope to order online so I have more options. If anyone has any constructive critisism or questions about my care- feel free
    to say or ask questions! Love you guys and this pet community 💗

      I used to breed my feeders and it was so easy. I took 2 shoe totes and created a breeding system by putting the super worms in the top one. There was a screen between the two so that when they had babies they would fall to the second tote so that the adult beetles wouldn’t eat them. I used plain oatmeal as a bedding. I would do that with my meal worms too, crickets were different but this works for most worms. And goodness, they would mass produce, I would have so much worms, but it works out cause you would have a variety of sizes of worms to feed you Cham. Hope this helps, cause I couldn’t find any seller that had small mealworms for my baby cham and I had to do this and it helps.

    I order from a bunch of different places. Pangea I've got some dead bulbs living in PA. I have the Zoo Med Ultraviolet Radiometer ST-7 which just solves all my problems and worries if for some reason I feel that they aren't getting enough UVB. It's been really hit or miss for me when buying UVB. Do you know anybody in the states that have trouble with Pangea?

    Hi, I'm hoping you can answer this for me, I was gifted the Zoo med chameleon kit , which comes with a UVB and heat lamp duo lamp thing. I have had this for a couple of weeks, but I recently bought a UVB tester and I noticed my chameleon was not getting the proper UVB, I purchased the Arcadia 7%UVB Pro T5, but is this bulb enough? Do I still need to use the Duo one or no?

  • @jerseyfinfan7547

    Thank you so much for this information. I also got the darn kit (against my better judgement.... It's been a while since I've cared for a reptile, I thought maybe the kits would be good by now). However, this kit also comes with a UVA light. I have a few questions
    1) Will a linear light that you're speaking of be good by itself?
    2) Should I keep using the 2 lights (UVA + UVB) that came with the kit + the linear UVB light?
    3) Should I just use the linear light + JUST the UVA light (that came with the kit)
    4) Should I also look into a linear UVA light+fixture!?
    Thank you so much! I just want to make sure I am giving him the best chance at a good, healthy life. We've had him for little over a week. Seems to be doing well, but I am scared. I have an Arcadia 22" 10% UVB on the way! (Should be here in a couple days)

    • @jerseyfinfan7547
      @jerseyfinfan7547 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I found out my answer on my own just now. What I'm going to do is buy a basking lamp for the fixture this came with (it says on the description it can be used for that, then also keep the UVA light in and just use all 3 lights during the day. I see now he ALSO needs a basking light, despite this UVB lamp so I will use it for that. Please let me know what you think though! Thank you

    • @kendall4060
      @kendall4060 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Since the minimum is around 2x2x4 I believe (feel free to correct anyone if I’m wrong) so I think a 48 inch UVB bulb should be good. I would get a 10.0 UVB bulb rather than a 5.0 because the 10’s are stronger and better suited for beardies. You will need to replace the bulb every 6 months so stock up! 😂 The bulb and light itself is quite expensive so make sure to price match! And if you have a baby that’s in like a 40 gallon or something a 24 inch might work better😊

    • @EmmaLynneSampson

    it funny the information out here.. i talked to a breeder here in Charlotte about these coils uvb bulbs.. and he said they have came a long way in the last few years. and the dude had some on a few of his smaller enclosures. so.. idk. all his animals seemed really healthy. i think some of these rules come from back in the day. like the whole thing with glass tanks.. nothin wrong with glass as long as it is BIG enough and has enough ventilation. back in the day they didn't have these terrariums with front opening doors and vents.. they had AQUARIUMS.. and that was no good.. and i think the whole "GLASS BAD BAD BAD" thing just carried from then..

  • @oriolesmd1
    @oriolesmd1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    How far away from the the top of the enclosure should the highest vine be for a veiled chameleon? Wondering if I get the linear fixture if I have to keep them vine more than 5-6 inches from the top of the enclosure/overhead linear fixture on outside of fixture?

    Use a UVB meter and refer to the Ferguson zone for the required UVB for the animal. That's the best way to do it. There are many ways to provide UVB. Some are better than others. CFL's can work, they are a lot better than they used to be.

    • @GizmoLPS
      @GizmoLPS 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't recommend feeding meal worms to bearded dragons because their shell is hard for them to digest. I feed my bearded dragon dubia roaches, which is one of the best staple food you can feed your bearded dragon. You could also feed him/her crickets, but dubias are highly recommended by most beardie owners!! Some beardie owners feed them super worms but it depends on how old your beardie is because they're pretty big, but personally I didn't like feeding mine super worms; they're more like a treat, if anything. I also feed my beardie horn worms, which mine LOVE; but only as treats because they have high water content and can be fatty. Hope this helps!!
