  • As a chameleon owner, I often get asked if chameleons make good pets! unfortunately there isn't a simple answer to this question as it depends on what you're looking for in a pet. In this video I discuss what it's like to own a chameleon and some pros and cons of them to help you decide if a chameleon is the right pet for you!

    Hello! I’m a chameleon owner and I would also like to add that if you purchase a female please keep in mind that they can store speak for up to 12 months and can have babies every three months for two years! I saved a female Jackson chameleon from pet co and wasn’t aware she was carrying and now we have babies! Always be prepared! We had to scramble to buy a new cage and plants and fruit flies! If it wasn’t for Emma and Tyler ruggue I would have been lost!

    Exotic pets are really, in general, not for everyone. I keep only kind of 'easy' species (hognose, ball python, kingsnake, northern blue tongue skink) and still their care can get kind of time consuming/taxing. Not only the time to actually care for them, but keeping up to date on research on what is the best care for them, making backups for your backups in case of emergency because they aren't quite as easy to evacuate from homes as are cats/dogs/ect, even going on trips can become a bit of a headache because not only does the person have to be willing to care for your pet (not always easy in the case of snakes), but also you have to teach them and make them knowledgeable enough to handle it.
    I love my reptiles, wouldn't trade 'em for anything, but there is a lot of behind the scenes stuff many don't think about when they consider getting one.

    Hey, I’m thinking of getting a chameleon but after watching this video I’m not sure if it is the best pet for me because of them getting stressed easily because I would want to hold it. I was wondering if they would get stressed by me just letting it climb on me and stuff while I’m sitting in bed or something. I wouldn’t want to carry it around but I would let it climb on its own. Wound that stress it out or not?

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
      @EmmaLynneSampson  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re looking for a reptile that you’d like to hold, I probably wouldn’t get a chameleon. They are better as display animals. You may prefer something like a bearded dragon or some type of gecko!

    Good interesting video . They are pretty pricey in Arkansas at the pet places anyway . They are pretty Kool . But for me at this time not one that I have time for . My Leo's though they work great because I work a evening shift so I am up at night late so I turn out the lights and have a small red light so I can watch them and it's so Kool to watch mine hunt and stuff. I have a few nocturnal specias of animals and I can watch them all while drinking coffee and on u tube . Any way enjoyed the video first one I watched from you . 👍👍👍👍👍

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
      @EmmaLynneSampson  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a suggestion, but I would definitely get rid of the red light! It’s a myth that reptiles don’t see red light. They can 100% still see it as visible light so it can be damaging on their eyes and also distrust their sleep patterns :)

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
      @EmmaLynneSampson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It wouldn’t have been the silkworm that killed him... it’s myth that insects can chew through them. As soon as an insect reaches their stomach the acid kills them immediately. The death would be completely unrelated to the silkworm

    • @crunchypb8987
      @crunchypb8987 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I here ya Ms.Sampson :), I just discovered your channel tonite btw 🤘... Its just that the worm was the last thing he ate before he died a week later :( my other conclusion is impaction from the worm because my night temp was too low for it to digest it was during the winter, either way no more chams for me. They def are a joy to feed and observe.

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
      @EmmaLynneSampson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Crunchy Pb I honestly don’t think it has anything to do with the worm, especially a week later. Night time temps aren’t an issue. Chameleons can tolerate temperatures in the 40s. If it had to do with what he ate, it would likely have been within hours after eating

    The whole handling thing goes for every reptile.can you grab and play with a certain reptile, sure should you probably not. What do you think of chameleons who choose to seek out their owners specifically, regardless of the situation?

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
      @EmmaLynneSampson  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the situation, because often times it’s a time of stress. Some people think they’re chameleon climbing on them means they enjoy it, but usually it’s them attempting to to escape by climbing up high. Same goes for chameleons who “want” to come out if their cage. Usually this means they’re stressed inside their cage. In my experience, a truly happy chameleon will never seek our attention from their owner

When he sees me walk into my room we runs to the front of his cage to be held and reaches for my face and my hair and turns bright green from a pale green. I have watched him in his enclosure and re done his enclosure to ensure his needs and wants. I have only had one chameleon but it very well enjoys being held and in his enclosure.

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
