The Most Important Advice for Anyone Considering Medical School | ND MD

  • As I near the practical half way point of my time in medical school, I look back on the advice I give to all the pre-meds who want to be a medical student one day. Trust me when I say it has been hard to recommend this path sometimes, and even harder to wrap my head around why I worked so hard to be so tired all the time. So is med school worth it?

    Speaking as someone who's still in preclinical years, med school can be this intense--but it doesn't have to be. Andy, you've taken on tons of extracurricular work, and it's clear you're enjoying it (and creating awesome content!). I've never had, or felt the need for, a 10 hour study session. I've been able to put in less than 40 hours a week, take all evenings off and have done perfectly fine in classes. Obviously this can vary a lot based on medical school, and will change starting 3rd year, but I just wanted to put it out there that preclinical years do not have to be overwhelming as long as you pace yourself and take on what you can handle. There will always be the opportunity to take on more if you want.

    Thankyou so much for putting out this video. As someone that graduated from college in 2020, and is taking gap years and studying for the MCAT for a third time last year after receiving my score back I was really disheartened and not going to lie while getting back in the gear to study again I lost the motivation and passion for medicine, but in 2022 I'm fighting for this dream and this was exactly what I needed to hear to start of this new year with a positive uplifting note. :) It's definitely hard somedays but keeping the big picture in mind is key. Thankyou once again :)

    I have high ambitions, but I also have extreme self-doubt (Imposter syndrome if you may). I adore the idea of going to med school and helping others, being in a hospital setting and learning about the human body… but seeing the amount of stress and hardcore content students do makes me afraid of even trying. I’ve just graduated high school and know science is the pathway for me… but it all seems scary. I crossed out the MD idea entirely until yesterday actually. My friend who I haven’t seen in a while chose a business degree, and doesn’t do any sciences; she told me last night that she’s thinking of becoming a surgeon. I gasped and shook her abrasively out of _Excitement_ and totally agreed with that career option. She gave me hope; “if she can do it, so can I”… and I’m the Dux of my class. The students in my cohort aren’t really ambitious, so being with a likeminded person, even for that brief evening really shifted my perspective. She even mentioned that mother supported the idea, and that after all those years of training it would be worth it in the end. Your advice reminded me of this moment. I’m still growing so I’ll see after completing my science bachelors degree if med school is for me :)) but I’m definitely considering it 😅😊

    Based on my limited understanding, medicine is truly a calling and passion; one goes into it because of a genuine love for it and all the knowledge required to be a practicing physician: chemistry, biology, biochem, human anatomy, pharmacology, logic/reasoning, etc. I think this is why so many doctors/dentists continue to practice past traditional retirement age!

    Guess what---you will still be tired once you are out of residency and into an attending or private practice position. The difference is that the level of fatigue is more manageable because at least you are in greater control rather than having to second guess everything in front of your mentors. Once you are thru with USMLE, boards, fellowship, the entire onus shifts to you and on you. Good luck with the rest of your journey. MD class of '98 (Emergency Med/General Surg)

    4th year med student here. My take is if you are a poor test taker, the process will be brutal and soul crushing. You have so many exams and failures are RED FLAGS. Board exams (Step 1,2) pretty much determines what you are eligible for in terms of specialty. (ex: if you want to be a urologist, surgeon, etc you will NOT be able to depending on your scores). If you can not take test well, you will barely make it alive through med school and mainly match into a low-tier residency. You will be anxious failing out or screwing up your match chances every single months. If failed exams or shelf exams, you lose out on break time like your peers and potential to push your entire next year schedule back which exacerbates your detrimental mental health. On top of this, good test takers can take some days off the week from studying, but poor test takers will study through almost every weekend. It's pretty brutal and soul-crushing. Now if you are a good test taker, ofc you are not exempt from these emotions, but will be significantly more do-able.

    • @wholeNwon
      @wholeNwon ปีที่แล้ว

      You read the question, answer the question then read the next question and answer that question, etc. That's how one "takes" a test....simple...duh. Self-delusion is very dangerous. The relatively easy part is med. school. Keeping up afterward is difficult.

    Do you have any advice on maintaining your mental health while applying to med school? I'm a senior in college and am currently applying. I've received two IIs (waitlisted at one of them), a bunch of rejections, and radio silence everywhere else. After working so hard for 3.5 years, applying to 21 schools (and spending a lot of $$$), and having what I thought was a competitive application, I have to say, its taking a toll on my happiness and I'm starting to wonder if I'll have to take a year off. How do you get through this and do you think there's still hope for this app cycle? Thanks - you make awesome videos.

    • @ripalsheth6157
      @ripalsheth6157 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I am currently in med school right now and applied last year. I'm not going to lie, the application process sucks, but I will say this: I only got one interview before November. I received 1 more at the end of November, 1 at the beginning of December, and 1 in March. By May, I was waitlisted at three schools and accepted at 1. But by the middle of June, I was accepted to 2 more schools - total 3/4 schools accepted. Things happen at a different timeline for everyone. Even though everyone around you may be getting earlier interview invites, it DOES NOT matter. Focus on yourself, send updates to school, and you will be fine at the end of the day. Even IF you don't get in this cycle, you get to make some money before going into $200,000 debt and you get to strengthen your application even more, which is never a bad thing.
