- Award-winning writer, director, and producer Joss Whedon '87 shared some unforgettable advice with the Class of 2013 at the 181st Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 26, 2013. Wesleyan conferred an honorary doctor of letters upon Whedon at the ceremony, which was held on Andrus Field.

Speech was good. The gentleman sitting behind and laughing away is AWESOME. Love happy people!
Guys, this explains SO much about the characters he creates! The good guys always have a dark side, and the bad guys always has a soft side. No matter who they are they all have certain things in common; they all love, they all hurt, and they all feel that they have to do what they do. Wow. Duality runs deep in Mr. Whedon. Loved that speech.

this is one of the million reasons why i love and respect this man from the bottom of my heart ^^
This man gave me so much through his work. Gotta love him.
To me, the most amusing thing was the old man's face. The flow of his expressions is just perfect.
So did David Foster Wallace and he gave one of the best speeches I've ever seen. It's not about setting an example; its about opening youth's eyes to reality and preparing it for the overwhelming everything that is life... be it the agony (leading some to suicide) and the ecstasy (leading others to write and create). It's often nice to have the reassurance of an example, but if you NEED someone to set an example, then I dare say you do not deserve to be living the grand experiment that is life.
Duality runs deep in all of us, Joss is right about that. People just generally don't like to admit it.
Thank you so much for being better than everyone else.
I would like to reply with Joss' own words:
"The only way, really, to understand your position and its worth is to understand the opposite... And we need to acknowledge and honor that tension and the connection... Our connection, not just to the people we love, but to everybody, including people we can't stand and wish wasn't around."
He brings out the best in all around him

That title is misleading. It seems like it says HE makes a speech IN 1987. Obviously that wouldn't have been likely. And clearly this is 2013, as written in the description, but I clicked because of the confusing title... not that I regret clicking, it is a great speech, but I don't know if writing Joss's graduation year in the title was very smart... am I right?

The fact is that every single action that occurs in the Universe creates sound, even on a sub-atomic level. You seem to have a blatant misunderstanding of the very terms you're using. Do you mean that he sounds like a very loud crash? As that's what it would sound like. Which ironically, is the very equivalent of your own statement. It came in voraciously with a strong negative message, but simply fell to the ground from lack of an actual cohesive argument.

His point is you don't really "get it" until you're in your 50s and having health problems, (and wondering how you're going to make the most of your last few relatively good years) that you've wasted 30 years screwing around feeling sorry for yourself etc, having seriously shallow priorities (how can I get laid more, etc) when you could have been doing something significant
