Concerning barking, we don’t have much of a problem with our Freddie. But at 18 months, he did start asserting himself a lot more recently. We followed your advice by going back and re-establishing our relation ship with him, placing me as the leader (I ‘look after’ the dogs and my wife the horses). We ensured prompt exciting rewards for paying attention and firm vocal feedback in prompt response to unwanted behaviour. He had coincidently started barking a bit at visitors when he began asserting himself more, but it wasn’t a problem - he’s quiet and I don’t think the GSP bark is that loud considering their size 🤣). Anyway, not only is he very focused on me now - that’s irritating my 28yr old daughter who loves him 🤣🤣🤣 - he’s simply stopped barking at visitors. My point here is that once he’s ‘announced’ a visitor, he just makes sure I know somebody’s there by silently going from me to the door/gate/whatever and back to me.
I’m sending him to day care 8 hours a day then exercising him for 1-3 hours a night mixed in with obedience training? Is that considered enough exercise? He just never seems too tired to bark at the neighbor dogs even if it’s just a bark he’s heard from blocks away
i just tell my GSP stop and he does.. Both my GSP can/could bark on commando and stop the same sec . My first GSP went to the other side 4 july 2017 RIP
Does regular exercise help with this specific breed or if the dog barks for long periods from anytime between 0700 and 0130 in the morning would you recommend getting a second Shorthaired Pointer?
Our pointer Otto just barks NONSTOP when we leave to work. It’s such a bad problem the first time we tried it the neighbors called animal control 3 times. He literally has to stay at my parents house because they’re home all the time. He always has to be with someone and it’s very, very annoying. He’s also very attached and cries when one of us leave which we also cannot stand. Completely out of ideas on what to do. He is a full time job, on top of my full time job and 1 year old baby.
Although Cooper often barks when he wants to play the real issue is when he and the Boxer are in the yard and people or, especially dogs, walk by they bark. My next door neighbor goes out into his yard and Cooper often barks at him constantly. Mini, my eight year old Boxer, knows him and mostly ignores him, but Cooper, a nine month old GSP just won't shut up. During the day I leave them out while we're gone when weather permits. They run and play a lot while out so I much prefer that to leaving them in the kennel but I don't want Cooper to be an obnoxious nuisance. Right now I put a shock collar on him while we're gone. Is there another option? I don't want him locked up several hours each day but I also want to me a good neighbor.
