@@segasaturn6800it seems to be about the same price now. I just got it for about $6 in Japan so you can probably find it for less. Maybe more in the States at a shop.
I bought my Saturn specifically for this game. All of my friends thought I was crazy, as at the time the Saturn was obviously trailing behind PlayStation, but I didn’t care.
A series I never knew in the 90s. Didn't find it till maybe 10 years ago. Almost instantly became my favorite fighting series. Awesome characters and not jerk off hard to pull off moves. Gorgeous graphics. Capcom, make a new Darkstalkers already!
Capcom really loved them some Sega Saturn after basically totally ignoring the Sega Genesis, their Saturn output in Japan was insane, and also having the matching cd case spines that really look great, all lined up on the shelf👍
Tragic, since most of these games could've been amazing on the Sega Genesis/Megadrive. By 1997-98, 40-60 megabit games were commonplace, and 120 megabits was the hard limit of the system. With its chunky pixel 2-pixels-per-byte arrangement, the Genesis could've managed very decent versions of these 2D arcade hits looking and sounding almost as good as the Saturn. Worse, the SEGA CD had been out since 1992 and was perfectly capable of 500MB of assets, as well as the arcade scaling, rotation, and warping (and multiple PCM sound channels) to get that outstanding arcade effect three full years before Saturn would hit the market. Making use of the 320x448i mode and changing background and foreground pallets while moving down the screen, roughly 200 colors could be displayed at one time instead of the old 61 out of 512. And more Sega CD addons were sold outside of Japan than Saturns even by 1998 when they were all being sold at a loss or put on clearance!
@@MaxAbramson3 That would be prohibitively expensive on the Genesis, and the SEGA-CD had neither the RAM nor the CD-ROM speed to play this without massive compromises to animation/color/loading/sound. Not to mention that SEGA Japan had washed their hands of the Mega Drive _well_ before 1998.
I was obsessed with this game back in the day. I still wish I had my copy of Diehard Gamefan's strategy guide. It had lots of great artwork and full color pages featuring all the attacks and even some of the animation frames captured.
I still have mine but the cover fell off. It was overpriced. It had all of the frame data & hit priority though, which I don't recall any western publication at the time doing anything like that at all, No other western gaming publication took fighting games as seriously as gamefan did.
I remember reading in Gamepro a close look about Night Warriors being exclusive to the Sega Saturn. I was in 8th grade, and I knew after reading that article that I was going to choose Sega’s 32 bit monster as my 5th Generation console.
When I bought my used Sega Saturn back in 2008, this was one of the games that I decided to purchase with the console along with "Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo". Now that both games are playable on modern cosoles such as the Nintendo Switch, it really saves me the trouble of having to set up my Sega Saturn just to play them, especially since "Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge" has always been my most favorite game in the Darkstalkers series despite most people prefering the third game to come out afterwards.
Your videos are so well-informed, enthusiastic, and really sweep me into a warmer nostalgia cloud since playing these games on my Saturn as a kid make up a number of positive memories. I've loved fighting games my whole life and Saturn's library of them was beyond rad.
Some of my favorite gaming on my Saturn was with this game! It was incredible to see all it's arcade glory come home. Paired with the awesome saturn controller, it was incredible! Thanks SLX for highlighting this gem!
This is the type of game ive wanted you to talk about for a while! Darkstalkers was one of the best of that era and its awesome to see you talking about it finally
I had this on the Saturn. Also imported Vampire Savior back in the day. Notably Morrigan's command input for her super attack Darkness Illusion would become the same command for Akuma's Raging Demon.
As somebody who would like to start playing Sega Saturn games, this video emphasizes something that’s personally bugging me about the console: so many of its arcade ports (which are supposedly among its best games) were amazing for their time but are basically obsolete now. In the case of the Darkstalkers games: near-perfect emulations of the arcade versions are available for just $1 or $2 through Capcom Arcade Stadium. So, unless you’re a collector, is there any reason to play the Saturn versions here in 2024?
Nobody has ever made a more fluid 2D fighting game till this day. And the music is hypnotizing. You can't found these cool sounds anywhere else 😢 Okamoto talked about this series on his TH-cam channel as well. He didn't said that clearly, but you can assume by what he said they came to Saturn because Sony didn't cared about Capcom too much 😂
By Okamoto, I presume you mean Yoshiki Okamoto? Interesting that Sony didn't care much for Capcom considering how big Resident Evil would become, but I also guess this game came before RE, which I recall was Capcoms first really big 3D title, and Sony back then was REALLY all-in on 3D, I recall.
To the best of my recollection, at least, Night Warriors was my second-favorite fighting game that I owned on the Saturn after Street Fighter Alpha 2. And I even owned the RAM expansion and X-Men VS Street Fighter. But I loved Night Warriors even more!
Japanese players still play this at tourneys, its one of those classic games that stood the test of time like Super street fighter 2 and KOF98, the Saturn is such a great console, especially if you like fighters.
Darkstalkers was a revelation to me. It has so much more personality than Street Fighter in my opinion. I’ve always been sad that it can’t achieve the popularity of SF2 itself. I love the characters in this game! Night Warriors brought my favorite fighter: Hsien-Ko.
Nice review. The saturn never ceases to amaze me. The stages in this game on both saturn and arcade, are really lovely, especially Aulbath/Rikuo's stage.👍
Vampire Savior was one of my favorite games ever on the Saturn, and definitely my favorite Capcom fighting game. This series is seriously under appreciated - like so many other video games from the early days..
Darkstalkers is one of my most favourite fighting games ever. The characters and the entire backgrounds, really shows a lot of personality to it. The opening of this game still looks amazing.
People can say whatever they want about the Saturn and it’s 3D graphics capabilities but one thing nobody can deny that when it comes to Capcom arcade ports during the 32 bit era, the Saturn was truly a 2D monster.
Night Warriors is my favorite fighting game ever. Damn it's so beautiful, I love how colorful the characters and backgrounds are. I like it even more than the 3rd entry because the backgrounds here and much prettier (and each character has their own stage, not shared backgrounds like Darkstalkers 3). I played it so much in the arcades that I was in heaven when I heard there was a home version on the Saturn.
Amazing game. I never understood why there was the discrepancy in screen proportion on capcom cps2 conversions on saturn, but this is usually the only nitpick, showing how close to perfect were these ports. Morrigan and Lei-Lei ftw!
It’s because Sega Saturn resolution on those games was like 320x240 while the arcade game was 384x224. So in that sense, it was lower resolution however the assets were kept at the same scale as the arcade.
All about my Saturn. Never had one growing up but I just picked up a model 1 a month or so ago. I had an N64 and was mostly a Nintendo kids. Saturn’s a neat system with some great games I’m happy to experience. Always love the Saturn content.
This game and Wipeout were my first two Saturn games and I loved both! I was so into the Saturn that I didn't even get a PS1 until after I already had a N64. FF7 and Blood Omen were the big reasons I finally caved and bought one.
Great game, I have Vampire Hunter & Vampire Savior myself. I don't even wanna know how much the US versions go for. I gotta say, I have more fun with Savior, but this one's nice to come back to.
I'm so happy years ago at my local flea market I found and bought Darkstalkers (longbox) on PS1 for like $20 or $25. Money well spent! Wish it had the manual though.
Great video, dude. One of the all time best Saturn games. My buddies and played the hell out of it for months on end in the mid to late 90s. One of the few CIB games I have for the Saturn that was extremely cheap when I bought it. Hope to see a video on Vampire Saviour.

Darkstalkers 3 might have more characters to choose from, but the Gameplay and the style on this one is much more to my liking... AWESOME port, hands down. Nice video, man, cheers!

The most impressive part of the graphics is that Victor's butt cheek animations pre-date Dead or Alive's jiggle-physics by two years.
