    An additional tip: you don't need to do the destructive process of baking shapes, you can just go to the stroke menu and check the "scale with object" box and it won't turn things to curves if you don't want them to be curves, while achieving the same effect.

    You can also use fx outline but you have to group your text every time you want to add an outline with a different thickness and color

    When I want an outline around just the outside of the object, with a solid fill throughout? So far the only way I've found to do this is to "Bake Appearance" and then go in and delete the nodes inside of the outline but I'm sure there's an easier way to do this.

    Adding - even multiple - outlines to vector objects is actually quite easy to do via the Appearance Panel (which Affinity Designer, too, has for some time now). However, for some reason it seems you cannot add multiple strokes via that useful panel to Text objects in Designer (yet?). The little "plus"-buttons are greyed out with type/text. Too bad!
    If you're content with just one outline you can - of course - just add a stroke to your Text element and set it to "Align Stroke to Outside". The corners, however, will always be rounded regardless of what you set in the Stroke panel. No mitre or bevel joints this way.
    Nevertheless, the advantage of doing it this way might be that you can decide whether the stroke should scale with your Text object or not and that you have just one object (which also will remain editable text).
    Nevertheless this is not yet the extended functionality in terms of outlines some of us will know from Illustrator. I hope Affinity Designer will evolve to give us more control in this regard - at least as much as Illustrator has had for quite a while now...

      Adding multiple outlines is one of the main things I do that helps me with my designs. Using Offset Path on Illustrator makes it so easy, where I can also control the offset distance and can add infinite amounts very quickly. I want to switch to Affinity Designer but the lack of that tool and way of quickly add several outlines makes it hard to completely switch. Adding one outline with contour is fine but adding several, it’s a pain.

    • @moreorlesslikeso
      @moreorlesslikeso 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mlob535 When you're relying heavily on the quite sophisticated options which Illustrator’s Appearance Panel is offering I very much agree. There's quite a bit missing in Affinity Designer yet as far as that functionality is concerned and I really do hope these things will be adressed in an upcoming update/version. Just the possibility to even add different live "Effects" separately to any of those multiple fills or strokes in Illustrator on top of different blend modes and opacity settings leaves so much room for experimentation and cool appearances (sic) of your vextors and/or type.
      Although I sort of force myself to do vector work in Affinity Designer if possible to really push my individual "switch", as of now Designer's appearance options - however good it is to finally have some at leat - fall quite short here and the Contour Tool is by no means a viable "ersatz“ even if it offers some interesting effects in itself.

    Hey there, I tried to make an outline this way and it only works if the font is sans serif. Otherwise the outline is really wonky and doesn't cover all the letters, so weird. Do you know what the problem could be? I have the 1.10 version of Affinity btw. This was a really good video I just wish my program would cooperate lol thanks!

    Why would this be used over the stroke tool?

    • @markdavies7776
      @markdavies7776 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was going to ask this same question myself. I think the advantage would be that you have a solid fill in the image underneath...When placing a stroke, and then expanding the stroke to make it a separate scalable object I've found this awkward if I then want to offset the outline. Even being able to use a different cap/join would have come in handy for a part of my current design as I couldn't find another way to have a mitre join when aligning stroke to outside of the text/image

    • @robbievengence
      @robbievengence 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markdavies7776 I still always use the stroke tool and the expand the curves so that the stroke is it’s own layer 🤷🏻‍♂️
