Hey there. Great how to video. I’m wondering if I have a bad thermostat. My 2015 forester is running really hot lately or so it seems (hard to tell without a gauge) I haven’t got any temp warning lights yet. But I feel like it’s hotter than it should be. I also notice the top tax hose is so hot after driving 40 mins home from work I can hardly keep my hand on it. But the lower rad hose isn’t hot at all seems like just warm from engine I think. I wondering what could be my problem. Sounds like the thermostat from everything I’m reading and watch on TH-cam. Could it be something else. Would love your opinion on this. Tstat seems like an easy change out to see if problem goes away and coolant flows again. I just don’t want a bigger issue to arise if the engine running so hot all the time.
If you never change the coolant then the radiator can start to clog up and then it will probably need to be replaced, the thermostat can also corrode. Coolant should be changed every 3-5 years or it will start to lose it's anit-corrosion ability. And mix with distilled water (not mineral/spring or tap water).
The engine does use coolant from the bottle (reservoir). It pulls coolant from the reservoir when engine and coolant cool down and when it heats up the coolant expands, creating enough system pressure to burp excess coolant into the reservoir. But you need to keep the fluid level in the reservoir between the add and full marks to avoid pulling air into the system. It also allows the system to operate at a designed pressure without burping and losing coolant out onto the street. Some people call it a burp tank.
I have used a thermostat from Dvanced auto and it keeps overheating. Do you NEED and OEM thermostat for it not to over heat? I have a '10 Forester. Radiator, water pump, fans, head gaskets, coolant hoses are good. Thinking.i just need thr OEM part. What are your opinions?
I tried this and accidentally snapped the lower bolt in the thermostat cover. I tightened it to 9 ft lbs with my neighbor's torque wrench but somehow that ended up being too much. Everything seemed fine but when I started the car I started seeing a lot of coolant fumes burning and when I looked under the car I saw half a bolt on the ground... Is there something I can do about that or is it time to send it to the mechanic and stomach the high price?
I just paid $600 at the shop for this exact service on my 2008…is that a decent price for parts and labor? Funny thing, she was in the shop a week ago for a air conditioning recharge, but no problems before then. Maybe something was knocked loose?
if you get everything OEM (oem thermostat + gasket and 2 gals of super coolant) youre at around $85 USD shipping not included. if you go to autozone and get everything aftermarket then you could save about $20-30 USD. As a hand on guy that works on his own cars, me doing and hr or two of homework to save over $500 is a no-brainer
What type of thermostat did you use for replacement? I have same model and trying to figure out which will be compatible with it
Hey there.

What keeps the engine from using coolant stored in coolant bottle? Great video
Do you mean the reservoir?

will this apply to 2012 Subaru 2.5l?
Yes
Great video, I have a 2010 Forester, I believe I may have to drop the exhaust.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Hi, great video! Where can I find the Creader 6001? or is there a different one that you may recommend as well? Thank you
Thanks for the videos. Where did you got the hoses?
Thanks. The local parts store.
No temp gauge, that is ridiculous for a 2010 Impreza, even my 2005 Outback has a temp gauge.
Same hahaah
2013 Impreza has no analog meter but has digital one programable to the second screen

Not so easy in a xv crosstrek . The elbow is on the top of the exhaust pipe and no space to work
Oh boy what a difference between 10 and 2017 model.
What a pain
Doesn't even mention thermostat housing, regarding gasket or cleaning it or anything. Apparently the thermostat gasket is all it needs?
yeah actually, theres no gasket for the housing itself.
