    Something I really loved about Pinocchio which I don't often see mentioned is how it subverts the original moral of obeying your parents (and other authority figures in your life). The original story was meant to scare kids into going to school and growing into a responsible adult; the Land of Toys (Pleasure Island in the Disney movie) and its transformation of kids into donkeys was meant to represent kids slacking off all day and ignoring their education, becoming adults who do grueling grunt work for little-to-no pay. We even got a scene where Pinocchio reunited with the recently donkeyfied Lampwick, just as he was dying from being overworked and underfed.
    Meanwhile, Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, now set during the rule of Benito Mussolini, takes the stance that you _shouldn't_ blindly obey all authority figures. Geppetto is very much misguided by his own personal issues, and the Podestà is a fascist that tries to recruit kids to fight for the fatherland. Candlewick's story is even reversed compared to the original; he starts off trying to earn the approval of his father the Podestà, and his ultimate show of disobedience is portrayed as a noble moment.

    • @arisu_6635
      @arisu_6635 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Oh i realized it too! Tbh i never really liked Pinocchio for it's messages and how basically said you better obey or you're gonna get punished, i never realized that the donkeys were a menthapor becouse for me they were just scary, and i think at the end of the day they work more as something scary to scare the children. But Guillermo Del Toro has such a difrent message which i think is way more intresting and complex

    • @ladyerisrose
      @ladyerisrose ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I know! I never liked the original moral of Pinocchio and this movie just went and completely threw it out the window. I also love how the theme of "breaking the rules" ties in when he leaves Death early to save Geppetto.

    • @tristantries9211
      @tristantries9211 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I mean it's not terrible to teach kids to not constantly rebel. Going to school, listening to your parents, not breaking the law ect ECT are just fine morals for young children. You add nuance as they grow older because of course blind obedience is dangerous but the idea that you can't ever trust the basic authorities in your life for kids is actually really bad for them and causes stress and anxiety. Young kids need structure and boundaries and to know they can trust that someone bigger than them understands what's best and cares for them. I think the old Pinocchio's lesson was just for a younger audience since it was more simple.

    • @StardustWhip
      @StardustWhip ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@tristantries9211 Of course; I'm not saying that the original moral was a bad lesson to teach kids. I just liked that Del Toro's version played with the moral to do something really different with its characters, compared to most versions of Pinocchio.

    I think Turning Red, even though it’s not the best animated feature of last year, it was such an amazing film for Pixar. I think the family struggles were handled perfectly and how it is not just one sided. The mother also being in the same situation as Mei was an interesting contrast as a whole. Also I loved the scene with the father being supportive of her daughter, which is such a great scene.
    I can understand that some can understand the dialogue and jokes can range from cringe to awkward, but I think it is the feeling of scenes being awkward for some characters and uncomfortable works with the idea of growing up and living life. One of my personal favorite Pixar films ever. Not per say THE best, but a great film nonetheless.

      For me, it gave me just what I wanted from "Brave" all those years ago, so I can certainly appreciate that myself. Really enjoyed it, and sad to see it got shafted on a release the way it did, then it only got worse with "Lightyear" getting the huge push it did and still bombing and "Strange Worlds" entirely being left to flounder in the water. They really need to get back on their game with animation, but this will be a good chance for other companies to step in if they won't, since they seem way more content with just turning every animated feature they own into "Live-Action" to "Do it right" at this point than working on the quality of them.

    I was one of the people who watched The Last Wish after the hype snowballed, and it did indeed affect my enjoyment of the movie somewhat. It was a fun watch but at the end I was kinda left wondering, "that's it?" The danger of setting your expectations sky high I suppose. Though it did hit deeper on subsequent viewings. And I've been obsessed with it for about 3 months now. I think the only real problem that came out of it was my low tolerance for reviews that said the same things about the film everyone else was saying and had nothing new to add lmao

      What’s funny is that before the movie came out in December, I hyped myself up before the snowball and despite laughing and crying, I definitely felt I overhyped it. Despite that, I rewatched it multiple times in the theatre and felt it more deeper on those viewings that I do consider it my favorite of the year.

Maybe this was a commentary on how Louise had grown past those moments in her character and that she was a better person than at the beginning of the series, but still it feels really dumb for the other characters to just forget how scary Louise is.

    If I’m being honest, I never even knew ROTTMNT existed until I heard about the movie in August and watching it was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. As a kid I was a casual TMNT fan watching the 2003 and 2012 but until watching the Rise movie and show, it made me realize how much I adored these turtles. I instantly fell in love with the personalities and dynamics the turtles and the rest of the cast had with each other and it also got me into rewatching TMNT 2012, 2003 and other TMNT content which I’m so grateful for. It also just makes me so sad how badly treated the show was by Nickelodeon. With Mutant Mayhem coming out I guess it’s official that they’re done with rise which sucks considering the insane amount of potential it had.

    Damian having a cow is just a comic thing. In the comics, he and Batman stopped a crime at a slaughter factory and there was a surviving cow. Damian, after seeing how the animals were treated, became a vegetarian and decided the cow was his now. He named it Batcow and it became his thing. Not sure if it stuck because audiences genuinely liked it or if it's because it was the last thing Damian did right before his character went through an extremely important plotline. Haven't seen the movie, but if the cow was indeed only in the film arbitrarily, it's because it was fan service.

    Inu-Oh was entirely the reason I was never able to take "Elvis" from this year all that seriously. It was a wild ride of grand music and stardom at half the time with more compelling and outlandish visuals. Entirely my favorite film of last year and a paticular highlight from Yuasa for me, right with "The Night is Short", as a personal favorite, but you really can never go wrong with him since each of his films really take advantage of the qualities that come out of what animation can do for what could have been a normal story.

    @mannymattina3792 ปีที่แล้ว +101

    Something I certainly noticed with 2022's animated films was that the year was a great showcase for different forms of animation, whether that be stop motion (The House, Pinnochio), 2D animation (My Father's Dragon) and 2D/3D hybrids (both of DreamWorks films). I mention this because I hope this is a sign that we will be seeing more diversity within the field of big budget animated films, as opposed to the same looking movies over and over again, i.e everything we've been getting from Disney and Pixar for years
    The other thing I would like to mention is that DreamWorks seriously outdid both Pixar and Disney this year, probably the first time that's happened since the original Shrek. I doubt DreamWorks is about to go through any sort of Renaissance, especially with Trolls 3 and a live action HTTYD on the horizon, but with Disney and Pixars films becoming worse and worse with each year (with some exceptions like Encanto and Soul), even DreamWorks mediocre films will seem like masterpieces compared to whatever Disney and Pixar put out. Either way, it was nice to see DreamWorks make two films in a row that were up to the standard of quality between 1998 and 2012, while Disney and Pixar continue to put out films ranging from the mediocre (Turning Red) to the absolutely awful ( Lightyear, Strange World). Hopefully these things I've noticed are a sign of things to come.

    • @thesapphireone
      @thesapphireone ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Why did you think Turning Red was mediocre? While I felt some characters could’ve been explored more, like the aunts, grandma and the dad, and not every joke got a laugh, I still enjoyed it, for the likeable characters, engaging slice of life charm, and maturely tackling the themes of generational trauma.

    • @mannymattina3792
      @mannymattina3792 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@thesapphireoneI liked a lot of the Anime styled animation and humor (to the point where it might be one of Pixars' funniest films, both unironically and ironically in the case of the climax), but the film had none of the heart or emotion that a Pixar film should have.

    • @mannymattina3792
      @mannymattina3792 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @courtneymcaulay7501 To be more specific, not only did the film prioritize its humor over its emotion (almost reminding me of a mid-late 2010's DreamWorks film at points), but when the film did attempt emotion, it fell completely flat because not only is Mei not that compelling, but her Mother is one of the most unlikable animated characters I've seen in years, and her "redemption" at the end felt like a forced sob story. Also, the entire climax is one of the dumbest things I've seen in a movie (seriously, twerking). Overall, the film has its moments, but is easily on the lower end of Pixars catalog.

    • @gustavoduarte3507
      @gustavoduarte3507 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@mannymattina3792 I don't agree at all, but fair enough. I do think Lightyear was really mid and forgettable save for the first 15 minutes, while Turning Red was amazing, it showcased a great coming of age story with a lot of heart and emotion. The twerking scene was one of the highlights for me, such a fun and creative climax, with many of the so called "crass" movements parents get so offended about, and showcasing them in a way that in the end, they don't really matter that much in the grand scheme of things.
      I understand peoples complaints about the movie, its style and overall presentation was purposely "cringe" because teenagers do act like that, and that may not be for everyone. But the heart of the movie is just embracing all of you, the bad sides, the cringe sides, the good sides, embrace it. It's basically "don't kill the part of you that is cringe, kill the part that cringes" in movie form. And i understand how many times this message was shown in animated movies before (A LOT), but in how earnest the movie is about its themes, makes the message hit way more. So i thought it did it really well, even going as far as showing other members (older members, specifically) of the family dealing with it, and coming to terms with themselves.
      It had just as many heart and emotion as Luca did for me, another amazing movie from Pixar

    • @mannymattina3792
      @mannymattina3792 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @gustavoduarte3507 I see what you mean there, and you make good points. Like I said, I enjoyed the movies humor and animation, but the problem is not everyone has constant cringe moments or overbearing parents. My point is Pixar films are usually more universal and can connect with everyone, where Turning Ref portrays scenarios that not everyone has gone through. Overall, I can see what may not have worked with me, at least may work with some others.

    God 2022 was just a treasure trove of great animated movies. Most people don't even know do they? I'm gonna be turning people onto movies for years that they missed.

    Nice Hadestown reference, and a striking one - can you imagine Patrick Page in voiceover work as a villain? (*fans self*)

    I’m interested in seeing Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken! Sure it looks a little bit predictable based on the trailer, but the colour scheme is pretty and I’m a marine biology nerd, not to mention that with Dreamworks throwing us for a loop with how unexpectedly good The Last Wish was, it definitely has potential!

    30:00 The whole movie was actually inspired by a book with the same name made by Aaron Blabey. The book still has the main gang (beside the spider girls). Where the wolf wants to do good deeds. But they end up failing constantly. Their first mission is even to break in and free (dogs) from a (dog pound).

    This isn't relevant and might be a weird comment, but I love how, when you shout during narration, it's like, fake whisper-shouting; it's adorable.

    Best of the year: Rise movie. I was stunned into silence after watching it and then screamed afterwards because it was so good. And considering that TMNT is my biggest Special Interest at the moment, safe to say I was hyped.
    Most looking forward to for 2023: Mutant Mayhem, no doubt. Also hyped for SpiderVerse and the new Barbie movie coming out, and Mario was actually really good.

    I am genuinely looking forward to Ruby Gillman. With the way DreamWorks has changed and the character designs being adorable I have high hopes. Though I am very annoyed with the little mermaid comparison thing, there is so much more in just the trailer to look at than a red head mermaid.

    I'll be honest, I am very interested in Ruby Gillman, it definitely feels like everyone on that movie had fun making it, and it REALLY FEELS like DreamWorks just made it to make fun of The Little Mermaid, which I absolutely love.

    For me, the overhype didn't affect me too much for Puss in Boots. It's easily one of the year's best and one of DreamWorks best.
    However, while not the movie's fault, the fan base it generated became so obnoxious for putting down any future Disney and Pixar projects, only for them to whine that the company "fell off" upon Ruby Gillman and Trolls 3 being announced, showing how little they have a crap about animation or DreamWorks as a whole.

      Oh as I noted in my own comments they ESPECIALLY took losing both the Oscar and Annie for best animated feature especially poorly. Dismissing Pinocchio as “Oscar bait trash nobody cares about” and while there is truth in how the Academy is out of touch, they 1. *often say that while fully admitting they haven’t seen it* 2. Really have difficulty seeing the forest from the trees in terms of victory for smaller studios sure the press treats it as a victory to del Toro and Netflix but let us not forget Shadowmachine’s (the studio behind Moral Orel and BoJack) contribution. Like I was especially critical of people treating it as a “chance to pwn” when in reality to quote Some Jerk With a Camera “Universal is owned by Comcast!”

    • @DangerDavez
      @DangerDavez ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean you are dealing with a vocal minority here. 99% of people don't have any allegiance to any particular studio and most don't even know which studio is making which movies. I think The Last Wish is a much needed breath of fresh air for the animated medium. It certainly reinvigorated my love for animation and it gets my vote for the best movie (not just animated) of 2022. Unfortunately some people don't know how to praise something without putting down something else.
