Given Lightyear's fake movie premise, you would think the writers would have more fun with the script. I half expected them to poke fun at the reality of toy marketing, behind the scene drama and McDonald's tie-ins. But it was inexplicably super serious, and the Zurg twist was the most insane thing Pixar has ever done
@@Danbo22987 that just baffles me, with 90s and 2000's nostalgia at a high peak right now you'd think they would have done that. I really don't think it was intended to be "a movie in the Toy Story universe". I'm convinced that was an absolute last-second decision made after everything was done, decided by some exec on the Disney board as "a fun idea you should include (or you're all fired)" and was done in such a way as to ruin the movie for a ton of people. Literally the ONLY reference, in the ENTIRE film, to it being this way, is a blurb in the very beginning. That's IT. You could cut that opening line and the film would have been MUCH better, imo.

Let me guess what’s next for the fifth Hotel Transylvania movie that no one is asking for because the fourth movie is the film in the franchise that made it even worse than ever before; it will be made in the early 2030s so that Sony could cast Ariana Grande as Karen Puckett, a love rival of Mavis (Selena Gomez, AGAIN, unless they replace her with another actress born between the 1970s & 2010s), like the pop singer INNA (like Dracula and his daughter Mavis, she was born in Romania, just not the Transylvanian area) or Demi Lovato or Paola Andino from Every Witch Way or Hailee Steinfeld (who is in Sony Pictures Animation movies like the Spider-verse trilogy) who would deserve better) for the affections of her husband Jonathan Loughran (Andy Samberg of The Lonely Island unless they replace him with an ex-boyfriend of Selena).
I do actually wonder if that's how that works in the HT universe considering this is also a reality where vampires age like humans. But then again, I've only ever seen each film once, so maybe it was mentioned and I forgot.

It's like an acknowledgement that this is something not to scream about yet trying to scream anyway.
Personally, I think that shows/movies featuring anthropomorphic animals no longer feel like content reserved for kids, as Aggretsuko, Beastars, and others have been changing that stigma.
I dunno, we've seen animal-people animations targeted to adults for a while now, stuff like Happy Tree Friends springs to mind. I doubt cartoons will ever shake that "just for kids" stigma, what with their bouncy shapes and lively colors.
BTW, you mention about how Luck's expressions are restricted and kinda unnatural, and you wanna know what the budget of this film was? $140 MILLION. Yep, it's more expensive than Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio COMBINED.
These annual animation film rankings always keep me looking forward to your content. No one else does this amount of dedication for the medium. Also I really love how it’s not just the big budget mainstream Hollywood movies. It also includes indie, international, and anime films as well. These mean so much to me and I’m so thankful you still pull this off every year. Here is to another year of great animated cinema!
Although, I miss those little comments that come up in front of the blurred up poster in each ranking before revealing what it is. Her's and Schaffrillas's style of ranking videos are so unique! I can't find it from any other TH-camr!
i had unrestricted internet access as a kid and stumbled across the 2013 ranking video when I was about 8/9? Crazy how time flies, I’m 18 now! I practically grew up watching your channel and these annual ranking videos are like a holiday. 🎉
Man, 2022 was an abysmal year for Disney. -the financial failures of Lightyear and Strange World -Live Action Pinocchio -The quality of the MCU taking a f*cking nose dive -the Ow House drama -their CEO getting fired -Dreamworks kicking their asses in theaters
I don't think I can agree with all of that but...that's what they get for resting on their laurels and releasing movies every two weeks with no breaks.
Honestly the thing with the Russian Pinnochio is its so bad its good. They made a terrible movie that was so funny that it made it good. "A Talking wooden boy!" *shoots him*
genuinely blows my mind that when i think i'm aware of all the animated films that come out every year, cellspex says "hold my 'even mice belong in heaven.'" watching these ranking videos over the years have really expanded my knowledge on animated films from outside the US and even japan. i owe just about all of that to her, so thanks :)
Im not gonna lie, I hated Lightyear. Every joke felt lame, the supporting cast just felt like overdone archetypes, and the premise of it being the movie Andy saw doesn't work at all, because no kid would want a Buzz toy after that. They'd want a Socks figure.
Ikr! My brother and I were more fans of Socks than "Buzz" (in Lightyear). There was so much missed potential (like adding the aliens). This makes me wish I saw Rise of Gru instead-
Imagine how much better Transformania could've been if it were about Ericka and Mavis's relationship as stepmom and stepdaughter, as well as Ericka talking about her life as a monster-hater, and how wrong she now feels. Think about how much more interesting this movie could be if it had nothing to do with Drac.
I am always impressed how kind Cell can be to movies she doesn't like. This is the WORST films list, and I still kinda feel like checking some of them due to her words.
The part about how much the internet freaked out over the human Invisible Man not being hot is something I’ve definitely not seen enough people talking about. I’m not gonna pretend his canon design is the greatest thing ever, but people got like… alarmingly upset and it seemed like I was the only one who felt uncomfortable with how mad they were. Whenever people online complain about how “ugly” a character is it’s like they forget/don’t care that there are real people who may look like them (* cough Mutant Mayhem April O’Neil cough *), and in a movie as wacky as Hotel Transylvania it really shouldn’t matter that a character isn’t conventionally attractive enough for the audience
For me it wasn't that he wasn't hot, it was that his design tipped REALLY CLOSE to antisemitic caricatures and it made me go 😬 every time I saw it. Most of the designs were... Alright, but that one?? Yikes for me.
@@dulouis6059 That’s 100% valid, and for the movie’s sake I hope it wasn’t intentional cause that’s super gross. If that was what all the outcry was about it’d make way more sense for people to be as upset as they were about his appearance, rather than what it actually boiled down to which was the fact they couldn’t simp for him anymore
@@afoolishfopdoodle3284 Yeah people (mostly grown adults online who had childhood crushes on the 80s version) are mad that MM April isn’t white or skinny for this iteration and therefore “ugly” and “not sexy” (even though she’s like 13 in this), as if those factors are all that matter for a character to be good. It happened a few years ago when Rise was shown to have a black April and it’s happening again but now with fatphobia to unfortunately accompany the racism, which has been really disheartening to witness multiple times now as black TMNT fan
@@raynacarraway440 That's really stupid though. I'm pretty sure that the comic book April was based on a black woman, so why should people complain that she's black? (Other than the obvious reason, but I like giving people the benefit of the doubt.) Why should a character need to be pretty? That doesn't automatically make them a good character. And, still, Mayhem April is still pretty, so I don't know what they're talking about.

when you think about it, the concept of the past, present, and future spirits turning into eachother was somewhat done by the disney animated one staring jim carrey, since shortly after presents death, a the ghost of christmas future appears as a shadow where the jolly man died, and was a literal skeleton in a robe, similar to present dying as a laughing robed pile of bones
Man, Cellspex, you always blow me away. I consider myself a hardcore animation fan but you always bring up these incredible projects I've never even heard of! I love hearing your analysis and the editing is great. Keep up the excellent work, I love your videos, and almost any time I go see an animated movie in theaters at some point I'm like "Huh! Can't wait to see what Cellspex will say about this one!"
the scrooge movie is legendary amongst my family. i didnt think it was awful or great necessarily, but it was memorable for its off the wall, over the top presentation it's like anything that should've been a quiet, poignant moment got blown up 100x though i admit i did not find Past to be annoying? my younger sister called me up telling me i had to see it and described that scene with scrooge and his love interest as "scrooge belting out a musical number like he was taking inspiration from Let It Go" they tumblr sexyman'd SCROOGE
I think your intention backfired…because now I wanna watch that Scrooge movie. Maybe just the idea of it being based on the 1970’s musical is getting me excited because that is literally one of my favorite parts about Christmastime. It’s so freaking funny at times
Man, I've been waitn' *DECADES* just to see this list gin, and still worth the long wait was still worth It! Truly was Last Year Of Pinocchio everywhere!
Also, call me edgy, but my childhood version of scrooge's story is the disney one that feels like a damn horror film. I had nightmares of those boney children under Present's robe. Scary as hell, loved it.
Well to be fair a story with a character that looks like Grimm Reaper that warns the main charchter of his meaningless life and how people will laught at his funeral kinda has to be dark at points
I'm so sad about Lightyear. I was really excited for it and wanted it to be good, but it was the wrong type of movie and I wish it was something different.
Yeah, You're so right about people going "OMG this movie was so good guys, underrated gem!" about Lightyear and Strange World in a few years. It's gonna be a bit frustrating to probably see them compared to like, Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis and Treasure Planet as movies that bombed but were actually good.
This was on the Patreon cut but some quick thoughts (at least in the ones I have opinions on): - Admittedly not super important but I feel that it’s interesting to note that part of the reason why Pinnochio’s nose doesn’t grow (and why everything in True Story feels EXTREMELY off) is because the only thing it has over most of the other versions this year is that it’s the only one based on the Russian version (Buratino) instead of the Carlo Collodi version. Still though the localization team should’ve taken that into consideration…also I had to pause the video a bit just to process that LeFou thing. In addition to Wicked, Timon and Pumbaa might gonna have to sue for ripping off the comedic sidekick retelling of a Disney classic schtick. - Between Wonder Park and Luck, anyone else starting to worry we’ve found a spiritual successor to the Weinstein Company? - Only plus Paws of Fury gave us is opportunity to snark on the “You can’t make Blazing Saddles today” crowd (although I get the feeling that would poke the bear even more and they’ll blame the movie’s quality on “wokeness” somehow😑) - I admittedly got a good laugh at the joke in the trailer where Keanu Reeves’ Batman lists off all of the Batfam and associates (which even the Linkara and quite a few other people beat them to it) but I admit I otherwise don’t have a whole lot of interest in Super Pets if only because of how I’m find the human designs very offputting. Even on the Marc Mason front, we already have The Bad Guys - OMG I’ve been so vindicated by the Pompo section! Sure I didn’t “hate” the movie but I came out super disappointed even as someone who has film and filmmaking as a hyper fixation and someone who doesn’t mind the occasional cute comfort anime every once in a while. If you want a way better anime movie about movies…well no duh go watch Millennium Actress instead. Also not an anime but I also feel like recommending Home Movies, a pretty underrated series about kids amateur filmmaking that’s notable for being the first animated series co-created by Loren Bouchard so while it’s a bit weird and experimental early on, you’re at least in good hands (if nothing else Brendon’s a way more likable protagonist than Gene…in that he actually HAS struggles. Which is extra weird because he’s 8!)
As always I love your commentary and insights, and the amount of joy I get when other people reference Crazy Ex Girlfriend songs is embarrassing at this point.
It's insane how this year we got the worst and the best pinochio movie, 2 banger dreamworks movies with spiderverse inspired animation, disney showed how much their movies can flop, and oh i almost forgot luck existed so... Yeah preety wild year
I just started the video, but I need to thank you for the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend transition songs. Been feeling like a rewatch lately, so you've only further convinced me!
My biggest issue with the Hotel Transylvania series is the “joke” that the werewolf wife is perpetually pregnant/bearing children. That is too close to the way some couples are in real life to be comfortable for me. “Creators do not owe you confirmation for your fan theories!” This needs to be said more, especially to some fans of Luca and some fans of certain anime.
All of Wanda’s and Wayne’s issue of accumulating so many kids could have been avoided if Wayne had her neutered after the first 3 litter of pups or just had Winnie as their only child.
@@hunterolaughlin This is true; one or both of them could have been sprayed/neutered. There he is complaining about having so many children and you think, “You fathered them!”
Kinda funny how "woke" Blazing Saddles is (minus some moments there were a product of it's time), especially with how it portray conservative bigots as they are, meanwhile Paws of Fury feels like it was made by Daily Wire to combat "woke Disney"
Could you start adding chapters to your videos? I don't usually skip stuff but when I heard Odd Taxi had to skip since I'm still waiting to finish it with a friend. I also just like creators putting more care into these meta elements, frickin based that you cited your musics.
this is super random but people getting mad that the invisible man isn't hot is so dumb because i swear in the first movie there was a bit in a freeze frame where you notice he has a gut
Interesting, I really liked Bubble! And you're right the characters don't have much going on, but for me they didn't need to because the focus of the movie was obviously on the parkour and scenery. It's more an aesthetic film--it's about the music and the parkour helps add to the environment because then you get to see the characters traversing said environment in interesting ways.
One thing amazed me about Bubble is that we know how it will end from the very beginning. We’ve heard the little mermaid story before, we’ve had it read to us by one of the characters outright spelling out to the viewer that the little mermaid turns to sea foam. And yet I was still kept on my toes with all parkour and beyond stunning visuals. The ending didn’t surprise me, it felt like it was bound to happen and we just didn’t realise it. I knew it would happen but it still managed to make me cry 7/10 story 4/10 romance 10000/10 art Over 4 million traes shed 👍
5:08 the shape language and animation in Drac and how he moves and expresses is so fun, but the rest of it is…. Eh? I do like the animation though. It’s so pretty.
Kinda sad to see Scrooge so low. I found it touching enough and personally really liked how it looked. I'm not that much of a Cine- or Animation- phile, but I do like bright, colourful and bombastic.
I saw Paws of Fury only because I like Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim's my favorite movie) and...I definitely didn't...hate it? I work at a theater so I playfully challenged parents who saw it with their kids to try "hard mode" with the original Blazing Saddles.
I haven’t finished the video but I just wanna say I love the fact that you never put like a number score and you just explain everything on what traits make it good or bad. I’m always under the opinion that the movie could either be a five out of 10 Or 10 out of 10 depending on what you relate to and what intrigues you the most of certain aspects of a film. It’s why I think monsters University is very divisive and white giving it a number score in general just fails at really appreciating the film. Just overall you’re doing a great job and doing all the hard work.
thumbnail said 'worst to best' and I was so utterly confused at why they weren't getting better as the video progressed; hoping you'll do a best of 2022 vid, too!
3:39 as a lifelong Disney beauty and the beast fan, what you just described to me is an absolutely horrifying thing to hear. I did NOT need Lefou to be “redeemed” whatsoever. That animation and the animators who made it are honestly being wasted.
Missed this when it came out and coming back to it seeing your recent upload, I have to say the transitions using your high-contrast renditions of the posters fading into the original were all very cool to see, to the point where I was somewhat disappointed to see the transitions where you just put an effect over the poster before wiping it away.
Despite their lackluster receptions, I really enjoyed Lightyear and Strange World. It was interesting to see the inspiration behind the Buzz Lightyear toy on screen, plus I was totally geeking out over the callbacks to the Toy Story films. Strange World was fun too with its snappy animation and interesting premise. Also I unironically loved Scrooge, the music and animation sold me on it, and also Luke Evans does a fantastic job in my opinion
6:20 See, that pissed me off the most: this conflict between them was solved in the first movie. There is no need to re-do the same plot over and over again.
Japan says that woman in "Fortune Favors Lady Mikuho" is only 147 pounds? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say they told the script writer to just type something and he hit the first key on the three rows of the number pad, which are 1, 4, and 7. I weigh just shy of 270, I've been losing weight, and I'm STILL smaller than that character.
Unrelated to the actual content that matters of the video lol, but I love how many Crazy Ex Girlfriend songs there are, one of my favorite shows! I've heard about 3 in here so far lol
I sat down and watched Scrooge last month and was moved to tears! The animation is gorgeous, the soundtrack is filled with delightful and chilling earworms, and Luke Evans hits the nail on the head in his vocal performance, as usual, as well as the rest of the perfectly picked cast. Also, "Thank you very much" was the funniest song/troll scene EVER.
But seriously the ducktales take on luck is brilliant. Even his depute episode had better worlrbuilding and the worlrbuilding in ducktales is just set ups for jokes and charachter moments.
You know, watching this video made me realize that besides Chip and Dale, I didnt see a single animated movie in 2022 although I watched The Bad Guys for the first time durring a discord vc a few weeks ago but im not counting that
While I overall agree with your take on Scrooge: A Christmas Carol. It is positively overrun with visuals, they throw way too much onto the screen. But I have to say I watched with a mixture of irony and genuine enjoyment, knowing the film was in some sense trash but still appreciating how INSANELY ambitious it was. In a world where Illumination makes money by keeping expectations low, I'll absolutely take a movie that tries way too hard. And some of the visuals work, Isabel putting her ring on Scrooge's scales as she leaves is so clever and such a good metaphor. Luck. I know I'm in the minority for what it was I enjoyed Luck, too. It was good-hearted and charming, and I laughed. I watched it with my family and they didn't laugh much. But for whatever reason, I found a lot of the jokes hilarious. I found the world fairly fun and somewhat creative, I found Sam easy to feel sorry for, like, and sympathize with. I found Bob entertaining and charismatic, the same goes for Babe the dragon. I just don't feel this film deserves the amount of flack it got. It felt like a passion project, it moved along at a brisk pace, and whether you entirely agree with the message that bad luck should exist because it can bring good things (I don't agree with that message personally I think we'd be better off without suffering) I appreciated that a lot of people *do* take comfort in that message. Also, for all that people complain about how trite some elements of the film are, at least it's a message that hasn't been done a million times, unlike, say, "oh, just believe in yourself and be yourself!" This is a good message but god that doesn't have to be the only message kids' movies ever do. I could go on, I just really enjoyed the whimsy and charm of Luck and I hope at least a small pocket of others did, too. Obviously, I agree with the films lower on the list, they're pretty indisputably awful, or, in the case of Hotel Transylvania -whatever-number-it-is, aggressively mediocre. Cheers. Sidenote, but, Cellspex, if you're reading this, I am SO happy to see this video. Seeing your end-of-year reviews always makes my day. Thank you ever so much for the sheer amount of work and time you have put into making your audience happy.
Interestingly the scale metaphor was also in the original film. (My dad loves it and watches it every year, so I know way more about it than I should lol)

I'm a huge stickler for canon and I was abundantly dissatisfied by Lightyear because the film simply does not line up with what we know about Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story movies. The idea of Andy watching that movie and then buying the toys make no sense since the toys don't resemble their film counterparts at all. Like Zurg is supposed to be an evil emperor, not a time traveling robot from the future. Buzz supposed to be a slightly cheesy but enthusiastic action hero, not a remorseful and subdued pilot. When I watched the animated Buzz Lightyear show I thought "Yeah, I can see this as the tv show which Buxx Lightyear came from". With the film, I can't make that connection.
It isn't helped that apparently some people at Disney didn't like the "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" cartoon, so naturally they did what they could to distance "Lightyear" from it. Which I don't understand, as that by far is more in line with the type of character Andy would have absolutely obsessed over as a 90s kid. Plus they dropped a character like Sox and then we're supposed to ignore that he totally wouldn't have been a merchandising gold mine?

Personally, I think that shows/movies featuring anthropomorphic animals no longer feel like content reserved for kids, as Aggretsuko, Beastars, and others have been changing that stigma.
I dunno, we've seen animal-people animations targeted to adults for a while now, stuff like Happy Tree Friends springs to mind. I doubt cartoons will ever shake that "just for kids" stigma, what with their bouncy shapes and lively colors.
and don’t forget the best anthropomorphic adult tv show of all time Bojack Horseman
Tuca and Bertie too.
Which is a funny notion because Looney Tunes and other old cartoons never were aimed at kids, it was the following generations that made that up.
iCarly should be used as a counterargument against that "animation is for le kids" argument.
BTW, you mention about how Luck's expressions are restricted and kinda unnatural, and you wanna know what the budget of this film was? $140 MILLION. Yep, it's more expensive than Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio COMBINED.
how????
Seriously? It looks like a feature-length mobile game ad.
The animation for that movie isn't bad by any means but it definitely doesn't look like it costed 140 million to make
@@ijustlikebees i was thinking that might include marketing/advertising but even then thats usually excluded from budgets
That must be a money laundering scheme lmao
These annual animation film rankings always keep me looking forward to your content. No one else does this amount of dedication for the medium. Also I really love how it’s not just the big budget mainstream Hollywood movies. It also includes indie, international, and anime films as well. These mean so much to me and I’m so thankful you still pull this off every year. Here is to another year of great animated cinema!
Although, I miss those little comments that come up in front of the blurred up poster in each ranking before revealing what it is. Her's and Schaffrillas's style of ranking videos are so unique! I can't find it from any other TH-camr!
It’s funny how most of the animation in the liongate’s Pinocchio is horrible but the girl with blue hair is looking exquisite every scene she’s in
She has a pencil neck, though.
Most of the budget probably went to her unnecessarily float-y hair
i had unrestricted internet access as a kid and stumbled across the 2013 ranking video when I was about 8/9? Crazy how time flies, I’m 18 now! I practically grew up watching your channel and these annual ranking videos are like a holiday. 🎉
You cannot just tell people that 2013 was 10 years ago like that

-the financial failures of Lightyear and Strange World
-Live Action Pinocchio
-The quality of the MCU taking a f*cking nose dive
-the Ow House drama
-their CEO getting fired
-Dreamworks kicking their asses in theaters
The last one isn't a bad thing. DreamWorks can do what Disney didn't.
I don't think I can agree with all of that but...that's what they get for resting on their laurels and releasing movies every two weeks with no breaks.
@@poweroffriendship2.0 he meant it’s a bad thing for Disney
And that BatB Sing-Along too

you seem like the cool aunt everyone saw at a family reunion every 3 years but really enjoyed being around.
Yeah, that's right.
Voice sounds so much like that plus she sounds like a schoolteacher which she apparently was
Honestly, “the lion king 1 1/2 but with beauty and the beast” sounds really fun. Lefou makes no sense in that role though
I’d say it should have been Lumière and Cogsworth
Could be Lefou be like just making his own spin on the story that would be funny
A better choice would be Stitch. Just make that joke trailer into the whole movie.
genuinely blows my mind that when i think i'm aware of all the animated films that come out every year, cellspex says "hold my 'even mice belong in heaven.'" watching these ranking videos over the years have really expanded my knowledge on animated films from outside the US and even japan. i owe just about all of that to her, so thanks :)
Wait, people are complaining about new April? She looks great!

Probably want to pin your own comment
When does “Best Animated Features of 2022” come out, BTW?
Call me crazy, but I think Cellspex likes Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
I see you are a friend of Crazy Ex Girlfriend
Wait there's more?! I barely heard any of these movies and you telling me there's a part 2...
when you think about it, the concept of the past, present, and future spirits turning into eachother was somewhat done by the disney animated one staring jim carrey, since shortly after presents death, a the ghost of christmas future appears as a shadow where the jolly man died, and was a literal skeleton in a robe, similar to present dying as a laughing robed pile of bones
Why did you remind me of that scene? Brrr...
The writer version of "Get rid of A work to get A+ work" is "Kill your darlings." Or at least conceptually similar, I'd say.
Can't wait to see what Cellspex will say about this one!"
the scrooge movie is legendary amongst my family. i didnt think it was awful or great necessarily, but it was memorable for its off the wall, over the top presentation
it's like anything that should've been a quiet, poignant moment got blown up 100x
though i admit i did not find Past to be annoying?
my younger sister called me up telling me i had to see it and described that scene with scrooge and his love interest as "scrooge belting out a musical number like he was taking inspiration from Let It Go"
they tumblr sexyman'd SCROOGE
I think your intention backfired…because now I wanna watch that Scrooge movie. Maybe just the idea of it being based on the 1970’s musical is getting me excited because that is literally one of my favorite parts about Christmastime. It’s so freaking funny at times
Man, I've been waitn' *DECADES* just to see this list gin, and still worth the long wait was still worth It! Truly was Last Year Of Pinocchio everywhere!

"Father, when can I be on my owWwwWnnnnuh" is enough of a reason to rank it top 3 imo (but your actual placement is so real)

Also, call me edgy, but my childhood version of scrooge's story is the disney one that feels like a damn horror film. I had nightmares of those boney children under Present's robe. Scary as hell, loved it.
The children under the robe is definitely a detail that gets overlooked in too many adaptations, it’s creepy as heck
Well to be fair a story with a character that looks like Grimm Reaper that warns the main charchter of his meaningless life and how people will laught at his funeral kinda has to be dark at points
The Jacob Marley and Future sections are ingrained in my brain
i watched it in my english class but the projector also made it rlly green so every character looked like a fucking zombie???
I was never able to finish that movie because I was terrified of what the Ghost of the Future was going to do T-T
I'm so sad about Lightyear. I was really excited for it and wanted it to be good, but it was the wrong type of movie and I wish it was something different.
10:08 To this day I think Cellspex’s review of strange magic still traumatizes her.
We all know it's her Magnum Opus.
Yeah, You're so right about people going "OMG this movie was so good guys, underrated gem!" about Lightyear and Strange World in a few years. It's gonna be a bit frustrating to probably see them compared to like, Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis and Treasure Planet as movies that bombed but were actually good.
that is how the internet works
This was on the Patreon cut but some quick thoughts (at least in the ones I have opinions on):
- Admittedly not super important but I feel that it’s interesting to note that part of the reason why Pinnochio’s nose doesn’t grow (and why everything in True Story feels EXTREMELY off) is because the only thing it has over most of the other versions this year is that it’s the only one based on the Russian version (Buratino) instead of the Carlo Collodi version.
- Only plus Paws of Fury gave us is opportunity to snark on the “You can’t make Blazing Saddles today” crowd (although I get the feeling that would poke the bear even more and they’ll blame the movie’s quality on “wokeness” somehow😑)
- I admittedly got a good laugh at the joke in the trailer where Keanu Reeves’ Batman lists off all of the Batfam and associates (which even the Linkara and quite a few other people beat them to it) but I admit I otherwise don’t have a whole lot of interest in Super Pets if only because of how I’m find the human designs very offputting. Even on the Marc Mason front, we already have The Bad Guys
- OMG I’ve been so vindicated by the Pompo section!
As much as I loved Puss in Boots, I think Pinnochio deserved the oscar win way more purely for what it represents to animation history.
Getting a stop motion W is cool too as Stop Motion is arguably more under appreciated than animation
Meh I disagree due to preference but I have massive respect for Del torros stop motion.
same, they're still both great movies though!
I wish any of the other pinnochios were good enough that anyone could ask which one, and not look like an idiot
Last animated win for a stop motion film was Wallace and Grommit Curse of the WereRabbit I think
As always I love your commentary and insights, and the amount of joy I get when other people reference Crazy Ex Girlfriend songs is embarrassing at this point.
I am the same! Every time something references it I literally have to pause the video just to take it in.
I LOVE the new reveals of the film posters, they've come a long way! (And, of course, screw TH-cam copyright, but everyone already knows that)
It's insane how this year we got the worst and the best pinochio movie, 2 banger dreamworks movies with spiderverse inspired animation, disney showed how much their movies can flop, and oh i almost forgot luck existed so... Yeah preety wild year
I just started the video, but I need to thank you for the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend transition songs. Been feeling like a rewatch lately, so you've only further convinced me!

Could you start adding chapters to your videos? I don't usually skip stuff but when I heard Odd Taxi had to skip since I'm still waiting to finish it with a friend. I also just like creators putting more care into these meta elements, frickin based that you cited your musics.
I second that!
I genuinely enjoyed the first *Hotel Transylvania* film. Johnny was actually a deep character, for all of his goofball actions.
this is super random but people getting mad that the invisible man isn't hot is so dumb because i swear in the first movie there was a bit in a freeze frame where you notice he has a gut
29:24 it is so weird hearing songs on my playlist out in the wild. It's like suddenly being reminded that they do exist in the rest of the world
Interesting, I really liked Bubble! And you're right the characters don't have much going on, but for me they didn't need to because the focus of the movie was obviously on the parkour and scenery. It's more an aesthetic film--it's about the music and the parkour helps add to the environment because then you get to see the characters traversing said environment in interesting ways.
Wait, but Beasters was also an adult murder mystery with animals as an anime
One thing amazed me about Bubble is that we know how it will end from the very beginning. We’ve heard the little mermaid story before, we’ve had it read to us by one of the characters outright spelling out to the viewer that the little mermaid turns to sea foam. And yet I was still kept on my toes with all parkour and beyond stunning visuals. The ending didn’t surprise me, it felt like it was bound to happen and we just didn’t realise it. I knew it would happen but it still managed to make me cry
7/10 story
4/10 romance

5:08 the shape language and animation in Drac and how he moves and expresses is so fun, but the rest of it is…. Eh? I do like the animation though. It’s so pretty.
Kinda sad to see Scrooge so low. I found it touching enough and personally really liked how it looked. I'm not that much of a Cine- or Animation- phile, but I do like bright, colourful and bombastic.
i dont get the hate for it too,,, i really liked that movie and i found the animation and music really good, maybe its just cus im a theatre kid lol
Same here. I thought it was a solid adaptation with legitimately beautiful and creative visuals.
I saw Paws of Fury only because I like Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim's my favorite movie) and...I definitely didn't...hate it? I work at a theater so I playfully challenged parents who saw it with their kids to try "hard mode" with the original Blazing Saddles.
Minions isn't among the worst? I am genuinely shocked!
I always appreciate your music choices as much as the actual reviews!

Ah, 2022.
The year of Pinnochio... for some fucking reason lol.
Every time you attempt to shout, it sounds like you're trying not to wake up your parents in the middle of the night.
I was already surprised that Lightyear is so high on the list, before I realized that this is just Part 1.
I was so happy when she mentioned Odd Taxi
my brother introduced it to my and IT WAS AWESOME
Missed this when it came out and coming back to it seeing your recent upload, I have to say the transitions using your high-contrast renditions of the posters fading into the original were all very cool to see, to the point where I was somewhat disappointed to see the transitions where you just put an effect over the poster before wiping it away.
I actually did a review of 'Sing a Bit of Harmony' last weekend just bc I ended up watching without any knowledge of what it was and loved it.
I come back every year to watch your rankings. Thank you for your hard work! 😊
Thanks for the nostalgia bomb using Are We There Yet. Haven't heard that song in probably a decade.
Hotel Transylvania was a pretty good movie.

The 2nd was decent though
Okay, after seeing the intro on twitter, that cutoff got a huge laugh out of me. Sorry the copyright system is so awful.
Japan says that woman in "Fortune Favors Lady Mikuho" is only 147 pounds? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say they told the script writer to just type something and he hit the first key on the three rows of the number pad, which are 1, 4, and 7. I weigh just shy of 270, I've been losing weight, and I'm STILL smaller than that character.
the Pompo movie seemed really great.
Its creative and it really gave that insperation for art as a burnt out artist.
Unrelated to the actual content that matters of the video lol, but I love how many Crazy Ex Girlfriend songs there are, one of my favorite shows! I've heard about 3 in here so far lol
I LOVE the little musical interludes in this video (especially the excerpts of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend)! Bravo!
I thought this video came out already, but maybe I was thinking of last years and time just flies!
So positive for a worst list, must've been an amazing year in general.

10:31 it’s visually gorgeous and I have nothing else in terms of reasons to watch it but HOLY SHIT, those visuals. It’s genuinely so pretty.
i was so confused why you didnt even talk about puss in boots, then realized this was part 1 lol
But seriously the ducktales take on luck is brilliant. Even his depute episode had better worlrbuilding and the worlrbuilding in ducktales is just set ups for jokes and charachter moments.
You seem to find all kinds of movies that we never hear about in the States. It makes me wish we had easy access to all films everywhere.
So happy to see this video! I kinda liked Lightyear but I think its aesthetic just got to me.
"Usually for dumb Flash Sentry related reasons." :D
💀💀
You know, watching this video made me realize that besides Chip and Dale, I didnt see a single animated movie in 2022
although I watched The Bad Guys for the first time durring a discord vc a few weeks ago but im not counting that
While I overall agree with your take on Scrooge: A Christmas Carol.

@@jeremiahbok9028 Just be forewarned it's veerrry much a product of the time. I love Albert Finney's ridiculously silly Scrooge performance, but it's definitely... an acquired taste lol
3:33 So it’s Wicked meets The Lion King 1 and a Half……ok, but why? Eh, probably gonna be ignored.
Edit: Well…..bummed to hear about the Oddtaxi movie. Was expecting them to extend on the character like what the main character is like know after what happened in the with how he sees society.
I would love to see a movie of "Even mice go to heaven" but with Tom and Jerry.
I looked at the thumbnail of this worst to best video, and got concerned about 2022, then I remembered the Last Wish XD
Three "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" songs used in this video ups the enjoyment factor exponentially!!!!
Don't forget orange cats! There was Sox from "Lightyear", Whiskers from "DC's League Of Super-Heroes", Puss in Boots of course and the orange cat from "Stray".
I was scrolling through Netflix during this video, for kicks. I saw “drifting home,” and I thought it looked cool! Then I saw the thumbnail in the TH-cam MiniPlayer. I cried a little on the inside.
