This is one of the best of your reviews ever! IMO. Not just because of the bike-bit. But the "be-a-tourist-in-your-own-neighbourhood" bit. It's absolutely true! Well done mr Flyer. You've done it again!

i actually really really like this bike, sounds like an amazing commuter for london, all the potholes and uneven wet and dirty roads, you can find it second hand for under 8 K what a bargain.
.... And yes this brilliant review got me on the saddle ... Had been looking for a bike for ages (years) watching your reviews each time they appeared ...but this one got my interest peaked.... It's the perfect bike for me and my needs. Thanks MF for getting me out there and back on the road. Cheers fella.
I liked these so much when announced last year that I bought an 04 oilhead and made my own (removed windscreen/other needless stuff, brown seat, added Ohlins). It has been my DD/weekend toy ever since, and I even did a 12K trip across the US and back this summer.
That is a stunner , I test rode the scrambler in the rain with knobblies and found it dangerous , coupled with poor service at my local bmw dealer meant I ended up with my beloved Africa twin , but if I had the money it would be in my garage straight away just for the looks .. great review as always fella
Thank you - This was like chalk'n'cheese compared to the knobbly tyred Scrambler, you would never know the two bikes were related given the way they both ride! Cheers - TMF
Excellent review that I really enjoyed watching. I test rode the Urban GS last week and agree totally that it is a great fun, easy and comfortable bike to ride and that exhaust note is superb, especially the popping as the throttle is closed. The stability in corners with just the basic suspension set up that the bike has shows what a great job the BMW test rider must have done. I didn’t want to give it back either.😀
Once me bones get too brittle to keep the R1200GS vertical, I'll go for a version of the R9T. But by the looks of it me GS will last so long that the next ride will be the mobility scooter. If I can then only remember where I parked it. Thanks for the review.
Wonderful bike, saw the first pics in Q4/16 and right away told my BMW dealer that I would need / must have / non negotiable want want want the very first one coming to the UAE.... and so the first one is mine since 4 weeks. . . Still in the show room as currently with temperatures over 50 degrees (Celsius that is) a wee bit too hot. . . Wunderlich has a great crash guard for both "ears" as well as a little rear luggage rack .... did ride an r100gs for some 12 years in the 90th and can not wait to explore the uae & oman mountain roads in a couple of weeks ... and the "I first" it is .... great pics & commentary TMF ... thank you ;-)
Wow !! This bike is beautiful with nice exhaust note. We have nice roads here in Cali but something about British country side, just gorgeous ! Well done TMF!
Testrode it yesterday. I second your impressions, it's lovely. I never thought the BMW engineers could muster such an awesome sound out of the flat twin (I used to have a 2009 R1200R - same engine, which I quickly sold due to lack of character and sonority), and that's taken me aback a bit. Especially, as you say, compared to its other R9T cousins.
Just watched your review Mr Flyer on this bike and what a great watch! I own an 899 Panigale like you and absolutely love it to bits, however that day is coming when my young 58 years of age tells me to find something more comfortable to ride and enjoy. I’ve just seen one of these advertised at my local Ducati dealer and it’s sure tempting. I must test ride one. I know I’d miss the speed and looks of the 899 but this is also one cool looking bike. Just wish I had the budget to own two bikes! 👍
Continental TKC-80`s, not great in the mileage category (for me the rear gives me about 2800 miles) ...but I`ve run several sets on my R1200GSA, and there`s not a more confidence inspiring tire out there! Just an opinion obviously, but I absolutely love them ...superb cornering tire as well.
A sensational-looking bike. I do love a BMW flat-twin. The spoke-wheels and knobbies give my eyes goosebumps, though not if I had to clean them; just another job for Jeeves.
Thanks Bob . Going to Alan Jeffries BMW in Shipley on Wednesday test riding 3 bikes ! R nine T ..R1200R and the RS...I've decided I definitely want a BMW
What did you go for? Ive tried the same 3 at Jefferies too in last couple of months too! I tried the scrambler yesterday and I get the appeal even though there's much less tech in comparison to the other two.
Bought one. The bike feels solid & strong industral like construction. The build quality is excellent. Awesome to ride, love the sound of the boxer motor. Has good pick up when you need it. Added a 20 mm wunderlich handle bar riser to sit in a more upright motard postion & smoked front screen. Installed black canvas bmw panier on the right side, very handy, can remove & use as a shoulder bag. Be known , accessories expensive. Smart strategy of bmw to sell basic bike & count on customers purchasing additional accessories that come standard on other bikes. Expensive at 19000.00 down here in Australia . Would I recommend the bike, yes.
Has the screen made a difference? Thinking about getting this bike but the lack storage options put me off - for me, it has to do everything as its my commuter and weekend bike. Hepco & Becker do a luggage rack + top box. But it's all expensive stuff!
Meanwhile a few years later and my 2002 R1150R showing its age, but can’t fetch 1/2 of what it’s worth. So … planning an Urban G/S makeover ha. She rides and motors great, so adding an Auspuff, add some Metzeler Tourance, removing the fly screen, and Voila! Give it to my son as his first bike!
Another great review. Was consideting this bike last summer but the price (about 18300$CAD out the door) felt a bit steap considering its not the most practical bike or most equipped. But this week another dealer made me an offer on a fully equipped (though no tachometer or fuel gauge) 2018, I simply couldnt decline. 3000$ off or basically all options free and no preparation fees. Loved the looks of the Scrambler but the Urban GS sounded better, has slightly more travel on the rear shock and overall just stands out from the bunch :) Ive owned bikes from all Jap brands, a ducati, ktm, a couple Triumphs, this is my first beemer at 41. I will also keep my Triumph 865 Scrambler, but looking forward to parking this one next to it!
While I love my Panigale V2 after a cycling incident that broke my wrist I think this is the next bike for me. A real shame but you can’t ride in pain. Love the style and the chance to hit the dirt a bit.
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thats probably a good point, but we have a lot of graded but unsealed roads that are mostly fairly smooth! I don't think this is the type of bike for hardcore dirt as it is.
TheMissendenFlyer have now. Opted for the urban. I wanted the posey nobblies and I agreed with you on the scrambler tyres. Urban is that Little bit more comfy as I'm 6'2".Plus the retro Dakar livery holds sentimentality for me. Fully ordered and can't wait. Thanks for these great insights.
The BMW flat twin and Moto Guzzi's V twin are the nicest engines developed for motorcycles imho. BMW one has been developed more but the Guzzi engine is still very nice indeed.
Great review as always. The BMW Scrambler's OE fit Karoo 3's do take a bit of getting used to and IMO aren't as good as the Continental TKC80's. The difference in handling between the Scrambler and Urban is simply the tyres
I took one of these out for a test yesterday as it was the only R nine t my dealer had as a demo, my intention was to buy a standard R nine t and they have now lost a sale. It was fitted with full nobblies. At the start it was fine, both the ride and the weather, and it seemed a great bike, then it started to rain. The combination of knobblies, 110 bhp, high torque, shaft drive and very wet roads do not make for enjoyable riding. If I didn't match the revs perfect on the down change just right (Having had GSA and Multi with quick shifts for the past few years its a skill I've lost) then the whole thing wanted to go sidewards. traction control was cutting in under acceleration even on straights. I had a R100RT many years ago which could show similar traits but a lot less prominent due to lower power and road tyres. It showed me just how good modern electronics are on top end bikes and just how often they must be working behind the scenes, I wouldn't like to come barrelling into a roundabout and drop 3 gears to use engine braking to slow me down on the Urban like i do on the GSA. I've been riding over 40 years and I can't remember the last time i felt so nervous on a bike. A tip to anyone getting one of these don't get them with knobblies on, don't, they may look cool but unless you intend to use them only on dry days they are not. A tip to BMW and their dealers don't get demos with knobblies, in my case you probably lost a sale. Its a speed twin or bonneville for me I think
@@TheMissendenFlyer your probably right, but when I tested the speed twin I instantly felt at home, something I didn't get from the BMW. And The triumph engine grabbed me straight away, for a lump that only has 97bhp (lol I remember when a hot hatch car with 100bhp was something to lust after) the engine is a monster. As you know it pull from anywhere in the rev where as the range bmw needed to rev a bit to get it going.
Great review mate! I haven't risen in a long time, but moving to the south of France soon, so I am doing it, no question. The only thing is I don't know what I want. A cafe racer style like the Ninet scrambler, a Harley, a Thriumph, who knows. I have to say a personalized Scrambler BMW sounds really cool for a daily bike. Keep them coming.
I am thinking of getting a bike for nipping out for coffee and enjoying local twisty roads, not necessarily a retro, this bike would win hands down especially on looks if only the seat was lower
It reminds me of when the first GS arrived. I said "nobody will buy that!", it just shows you what I know :) The bike press at the time said much the same thing. Now the GS is BMW's most successful bike I believe. The original GS had no fuel gauge and neither does this Urban GS. Some things don't change.
I liked the R1150RT I had years ago. And I certainly thought the K1200LT I had was a fine bike. Both the bikes, unfortunately felt top heavy. I do continue have a fondness for the BMWs. Love to add a BMW to my garage and this bugger you rode is a beaut! Unfortunately I can't get the Guzzi's off my mind, I think when I tire of my T120 it will be a V7 III or a V9 Bobber sitting in my garage. Continue to find your reviews informative and fun to watch TMF! Cheers!
I hope I could get the head fairing and install on my scrambler . Would look Super sweet. And yeah definitely would change the tyre. Karoo 3 is a nightmare
The front wheel is smaller than the Scrambler and I think thats the saving grace on the handling .I need to take this one out .In the showroom I thought the handlebars were still forward ..This may be a little more upright ..
guy wolff no, the wheels and rake are identical to Scrambler, both 19 at the front. Urban variant simply has much better off road tires (TKC vs Karoo3)
Great, informative vid as usual.....SO tempted with the Urban, but not sure if I can bring myself to swap my sorted Speed Twin, for one......any views/opinion? I need both!
Would love to see a review of the "standard" RnineT. New one has upgraded front suspension. One of the last "analog" bikes left. Not a fan of the artificial ride by wire. To me feeling the throttle butterflies opening is nirvana. It might be down on power compared to S1000R or some other standard bikes... But they lack character to me. Few simple mods and you can get 115 wheel horses out of the old boxer. As always love your indepth reviews, and envy your roads.
I'm leaning towards a BMW. So many great choices with them. I'm in the US and you'd think I'd want a Harley Davidson. I do like the Dyna Lowrider S. It's 20k out the door. I have a hard time with that price over a lot of Euro manufacturers. I'm leaning towards a German made bike. My heritage is German although I am part Italian and Irish. Love your reviews and adventure video's, Flyer. Keep them coming! Cheers!
Did consider getting this, great looking bike! But went for the full spec RNineT (roadster) instead & love it!! Do agree with you about lack of fuel gauge though, Can you see anyone buying a new car without one. I don't think so
@@TheMissendenFlyer And I'm always looking up new slang words from you, Teapotone and Richy Vida, like scran, cracking, skonking, brat. So today I wanted to know where this Blighty town or city is. Haha, the jokes on me! Interesting history of the word from the Urdu, with V becoming B. Anyway, cheers.
Knobbie or Nobbie or Nobby but never Knobblie or Nobblie or Nobbly. Maybe it's the British English to Australian English translation but I have never heard the LIE, or LY ever. But I digress. Whatever floats ya boat MATE! Love your work sir. Thank you.
This thing looks SWEET. Good work Mr. Flyer ! I couldn't help but notice the amount of rake this bike has(kinda excessive i would say). Fuel Gauge: If the bike it's equipped with trip meter(s) I find it acceptable to not have a fuel gauge. I do mine by the miles although i do have a low fuel indicator in the cluster.
Morning TMF. I've been looking forward to the review of this bike. I like the look of it that's for sure, although I'd be hard pressed between the cafe racer R9T. I do love the look of that
You could maybe ask the sales agent to take two photos from the side, one of you with both your feet down showing your reach to the ground, and another with your feet on the pegs while another sales agent holds the bike's front wheel between his/her legs keeping it upright if the bike does not have a center stand when you collect/drop off the bike. You could edit the photos into your videos somewhere. Even though your reach will be unique, it will provide us with a valuable comparison between bikes (eg. you indicate the urban GS was more comfortable than the Scrambler and I notices it comes standard with the higher seat, but how does that slight difference filter through to rider position?)
Another great review! Lovely bike, ever tried a Harley Davidson? I ride a Dyna Low Rider S. See in terms of visceral experience, build quality, dealer service and just smile factor, it totally converted me. Put it this way, you wouldn't forget it!
I'd love a go on a Harley Nigel, but they are relatively rare over here and not many dealers around, so to date, I've never ridden one. That will change in due course though!
Another super review. Thinking of trading my desert sled for one so researching before I ride one. Read elsewhere that steering geometry slightly different to scrambler version with slightly longer wheelbase so maybe the reason for handling nicer?
Another great review, love that bike, sat on one at the local dealership here in Austin and it was even better looking in person. Wonder why BMW puts the exhaust on the kickstand side?
TheMissendenFlyer you could be right, maybe one of your subscribers can answer it for us. It's funny that other bikes like the R1200GS, R1200R and R1200RT all use the same engine but they have it the opposite way.
+PistolPete63 ...the GS, R and RT have the newer water cooled version of the engine, similar looks and architecture but a very different feeling power plant (sorry to correct you)....
TheMissendenFlyer no worries my friend, correct away! I was aware of what you said just not sure if that matters in regards to exhaust placement. I've also been wondering if BMW will ever put the water cooled boxer in the R NineT line. Based on sales of those bikes why do it at this point.
That registration plate looks like a storyboard for War and Peace, it’s enormous, way too big for that bike. Fantastic looking machine...would it be capable off-road?
As always great review TMF. I had a go on one of these when I had my 1200R in for its first service. I have to admit I'm sorely tempted to replace my XSR900 with the Urban G/S... for me the 2 things holding me back are the absence of a fuel gauge and traction control... Oh and a particularly pissed off better half 😊. Keep the reviews coming, I'm going to miss your videos when you decide to return to work 😔
TheMissendenFlyer then you're a lucky man... you get to "retire" (if that's what you're doing), while at the same time doing something you obviously love... I hope I'll be as lucky when I lay down my punch card for the last time.
sasholsuma yes I know... the XSR has got lots going for it. It's got the looks, the performance, handling and electronic aids all at an incredibly reasonable price. It's just that it hasn't got that feeling of solidity and quality of finish my R1200R has, nor the Urban G/S for that matter. Still it's a great bike which I'll keep for a while yet I reckon... so rest easy 😊
I must try this version. Had the scrambler version as a loan bike while my GSA was being serviced...hated it. Vibey and slow compared to new boxer engines and controls so heavy that traffic was a nightmare. But was considerably easier to filter than the hulking GSA. Also, think 10k is too much, should be closer to 8. But having said all that, the construction and finish are very good, particularly on the stock R9T. Also, KTM 790 is due next year, could be quite good - completely different bike - absolutely no retro pretensions.
I took the R NineT Pure out for a test ride last week. I thought it was a great bike, lots of fun for weekend blats around the countryside. Not for me though as I want something that has a little more touring potential. Couldn't really fault the bike for what it is. Agree on the lack of a fuel gauge.
Yes I thought it was a bit rubbish. I don't see why a fuel gauge, gear indicator and clock can't be a basic standard. It does have fuel light, little triangle warning light that through me as I didn't understand what it was but went out once I put some fuel in. If this was the fuel light it didn't have a fuel pump icon to make it obvious. I was told you had about 40 miles left once the fuel light comes on. Other than that the bike was great.
I think it depends on the particular display you have as not all R NineTs use the same one. The Pure just has two dials not the centre digital readout you get on some models.
Same Karoo 3 tires, same fork,19' front wheel , handlebars, gas tank, weight .engine as the scrambler. And handling on scrambler not good? Hmmm ,prob those karoo 3's took by surprise the day of the scrambler. Excellent tires once u get used to after a 100 miles or so. 70/30 tires Ridden in wet conditions with zero issues. Most riders not used to them. Do these bikes need them? well...They do "sing" once you hit about 45 mph tho. The double akro exhaust on the scrambler puts out an awesome tune as well. Urban GS and racer not available in US any longer. Looks like sales were poor.
Just bought the 2018 version of this BMW. Beautiful bike and the exhaust note is pure music. If you thought the front looked a bit duckish look at it from the rear, looks like Donald Duck!! LOL!!
Hmm. No job... loves the Scottish Highlands...wants to ride HD...Answer pay a visit to Thunder in the Glen this year in Aviemore. With just your licence HD will kit you out in all the gear and off you go on a HD of your choice. An amazing civilised weekend . Check it out. Oh ..great review by the way!
I absolutely LOVE my Boxer Motors... The less "frills" and electronics, water cooling, etc. the better!
7 years on, still loving mine.

May look at getting one next year (retirement). Until then, very happy exploring on my CRF300 rally 👌
Great review as always. The BMW Scrambler's OE fit Karoo 3's do take a bit of getting used to and IMO aren't as good as the Continental TKC80's. The difference in handling between the Scrambler and Urban is simply the tyres
Yes I think you are right - the Karoo's are appalling on the road, these TKC's are fine....
Riding one without knobblies is defo the way to go - don’t write the R9T off without trying one!
I’m currently trying to decide between the R NineT Scrambler and the Urban GS and I’m struggling to make the decision… 1st world problems i know!
Great trip it looks , need to get out myself and have a few adventures
Go for it Neil, you know it makes sense!
Great time to be buying a new bike eh? So many good 'uns to choose from these days...
Nice bike..... just my kind of thing. I love the number plate!! R90 URB
+hfranke07 Yes I spotted that too - probably worth a few bob I suspect!
+brighton dude :0)
@@TheMissendenFlyer The front suspension travel does, -75 mm, and the weight, + about 40kg.
Cheers!
+Allan Brown Thank you Allan, all the best - TMF
I hope I could get the head fairing and install on my scrambler . Would look Super sweet. And yeah definitely would change the tyre. Karoo 3 is a nightmare
Glad we agree!
Thanks for the heads up ... I do love this motor ..
Looks so pretty. I think my 1150 GS will never break down though :').
You're like a magnet to white van man !
Tell me about it, I need to purchase a bike mounted white van rocket launcher!!.....
Great, informative vid as usual.....SO tempted with the Urban, but not sure if I can bring myself to swap my sorted Speed Twin, for one......any views/opinion? I need both!
Great reviews chap, love how u reply to all messages..... class
It's getting harder as time goes on Pete but I'll keep trying as long as I can!! All the best....TMF
What an amazing looking bike! Great review and superb scenery as always!
+moondog33 Thank you :0)
I had an R90s back in the day and never bought another BMW .... the R9t series has certainly piqued my interest though
Sounds like that bike makes you appreciate life the little things
Agreed...
+Thor Hansen Yes I must try and get a ride on the standard bike...will talk to my friends at Bahnstormer about that! Cheers Thor - TMF
Cheers!
Thanks for that - a new trip video series starting up this Friday!
TheMissendenFlyer That's fantastic to hear! I can't wait!
Did consider getting this, great looking bike! But went for the full spec RNineT (roadster) instead & love it!! Do agree with you about lack of fuel gauge though, Can you see anyone buying a new car without one. I don't think so
Sadly not
Another gem video! Great review and what a beautiful bike and lovely scenery!
Thank you Brian!
Great review. Loving this version of the R9T.
+BangAun Motovlog Yes one of my faves for sure...
Knobbie or Nobbie or Nobby but never Knobblie or Nobblie or Nobbly. Maybe it's the British English to Australian English translation but I have never heard the LIE, or LY ever. But I digress. Whatever floats ya boat MATE! Love your work sir. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words Scott - and "Knobbly" is the English English!
TheMissendenFlyer English English thank you for the correction. Ride safe my friend.
+JIGA BACHI I use the trip on my bikes without gauges but this day and she surely a fuel gauge is an easy thing to fit! Thanks for watching- TMF
Morning TMF. I've been looking forward to the review of this bike. I like the look of it that's for sure, although I'd be hard pressed between the cafe racer R9T. I do love the look of that
+Richard Sherwin Yeah I'm with you on that...
Awesome review as always, thanks! One quick request if I may, would it be possible to show your seating position for each review?
Err, not sure quite how I'd do that???
Selfie!
GREAT review.
THANK You.
My pleasure!
Retro bikes didn’t have fuel gauges. We used to have reserve on the fuel tap, shock horror we didn’t even have a light to tell us to turn on reserve.
I just bought one today. Parked it next to my Street Triple RS.
Nice one - congratulations and enjoy!
Looks like a storm trooper !
...yes I suppose it does a bit, in the right light, if you squint...and tilt your head a bit...
Second time I’ve watched this, which a great vid, but just to say two years on still love this urban GS 👍
Different tyres to Scrambler which had Metzeler Karoo the Urban GS looks like Continental TKC80. RnineT Scrambler looks best in my opinion
I know, we've only got 2 in Scotland, but they're both top notch. The Glasgow one has a coffee shop in it!
@@dukeofzhou I have a Low Rider S & an Urban GS.... all good ;-)
Beautiful machine.
Yup!
Another super review. Thinking of trading my desert sled for one so researching before I ride one. Read elsewhere that steering geometry slightly different to scrambler version with slightly longer wheelbase so maybe the reason for handling nicer?
Could well be!
If they had a fuel gauge then it would be so much better, even if it was optional. I wonder how well it does off road / green lane work.
In my hands not very well!
plate suits it so well too ,,, great review ,,
Glad you spotted that...
6ft 3 here, which would be more comfortable, this or the triumph scrambler 900 ?
I suspect this.....
managed to capture the look of old R80 GS & got the old BMW dakar paint scheme .
Yeah, I think they've done a good job on this one....rides better than it looks too!
Another great review, love that bike, sat on one at the local dealership here in Austin and it was even better looking in person. Wonder why BMW puts the exhaust on the kickstand side?
Hmm, something to do with the shaft drive maybe???
Great review! Top channel on my list.
+Meat and Motorcycles Cheers!
Another top notch review Mr F ...you are riding some lovely bikes at moment.. you must have to pinch yourself... keep up the good work😊
Cheers Keith :0)
Good evening TMF a very nice looking bike Thank you for the video and Take Care
Cheers Wayne - all the best to you and thanks for your continued support....
That registration plate looks like a storyboard for War and Peace, it’s enormous, way too big for that bike.
Fantastic looking machine...would it be capable off-road?
I suspect it would be ok off road - but too heavy in my mind to be properly “capable”
Keep the reviews coming, I'm going to miss your videos when you decide to return to work 😔
Cheers Onyeka, who said anything about me returning to work....I'm done with the 9-5....
TheMissendenFlyer then you're a lucky man... you get to "retire" (if that's what you're doing), while at the same time doing something you obviously love... I hope I'll be as lucky when I lay down my punch card for the last time.
...I like to think of it as fortunate rather than lucky....but that's another story. All the best - TMF
sasholsuma yes I know... the XSR has got lots going for it.
Cheers Mr Hmm
Great review...as usual.
BTW anyone want to buy a hardly used 2017 BMW Rallye Suit in blue/grey?
Size 52
:-))
Another excellent review TMF! - Is that a new mesh jacket? review coming?
Hehe, no that's a very old mesh jacket that is no longer available (company went bust long ago!)......
Really fancy one of these but at 5ft 6 I think the seat height may be too much for me.
Sadly i think you may be right....
Wonderful. Like this bike. Like this guy.
Thank you :0)
I really enjoyed this review.
Great!
I took the R NineT Pure out for a test ride last week. I thought it was a great bike, lots of fun for weekend blats around the countryside. Not for me though as I want something that has a little more touring potential. Couldn't really fault the bike for what it is. Agree on the lack of a fuel gauge.
+Dougie I hadn't realised others in the RnineT family don't have fuel gauges either - that's pants!
Other than that the bike was great.
the fuel pump icon appears in the display with the miles since you hit the reserve
I think it depends on the particular display you have as not all R NineTs use the same one. The Pure just has two dials not the centre digital readout you get on some models.
the Pure just has the one dial, same as scrambler and urban. The fuel pump sign appears on the digital display bit
Nice, Practical, for all days.
Looked it up - funnily enough I am planning on being in Scotland that very week with my CRF!
TheMissendenFlyer see you there Sir!
