Bulls vs Heat 1997 - Game 4 - Michael Jordan 29 points

  • The Bulls lost this game, 87-80, but who cares?
Even in a loss, Michael Jordan shows what made him the greatest player we've ever seen.
After a horrendous - almost embarrassing - three quarters of basketball, MJ exploded in the fourth to bring his Bulls back.
Jordan hit just 9 of 35 shots, but most of them came during an important stretch in the fourth, that almost led the Bulls to an unbelievable comeback in game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Even in a game where he could not hit anything for three quarters, Jordan finished with a game-high 29 points.
This game is also well-known for two reasons:
    1) Alonzo Mourning guaranteed at Heat victory - which he delivered on.
    2) Mourning's huge elbow gave Scottie Pippen a nasty bump on his head.
Ugly game all around, but Jordan was beautiful to watch late in the game - as he always is.

Steve Kerr says this is easily one of the most impressive Jordan games. Just the confidence to go 2 for 22 and then completely dominate the 4th quarter

    • @arturoluna475

someperson111 Players like Jordan don't have to stress because they're always going to get more shots even if they start out badly. The people who really need confidence are the role players who get like 5-10 minutes a game and still have to produce with very limited opportunities

You have a point. Jordan could play himself out of a funk but nonetheless you have to have supreme confidence to do what he did in this video

someperson111 you're right, he could have decided it just wasn't his night and relied on his teammates, but he probably thought that would be weak so he focused even more and dominated the 4th. He knew that his first 3 qtrs were an anomaly, and he bet on himself.

Despite the Bulls losing, this is still one of my favorite games from the MJ era. The fact that he was playing SO badly, and yet all of a sudden motivated himself to find an extra gear and turn it on in the 4th and almost come all the way back. You could see the fear in the Heat's eyes and Riley looked like he had seen a ghost.

This is one of the most unbelievable turnarounds ever for a player. Jordan was like 2-22 from the field with 9 points going into the 4th, and he hits like 7-12 from the floor in the 4th and scores 20. Just amazing will and stamina. 34 years old. GOAT. What people don't realize when they see players today have big 4th quarters is that Jordan did that almost EVERY GAME. Honestly, games where he scored 12+ in the 4the were the norm, not the exception. 1996 and prior 15+ in 4th was common.

ForEmily23, that fake, dribble, and shot at 7:36 is the lightning quick move I was talking about the other week. Thanks for including the whole sequence and not just the shot. Look how quickly he executes the fake, and then the blinding step past Lenard and he's iin the air for the shot instantly. Amazing. 34 years old. You can actually drag the video cursor right to the spot where he comes off the fake and takes the step, and it's insane how fast it is.

The reason why this is one of his best games is he just kept attacking, and he got hot and almost led the bulls back to a win. Kobe or Lewimp would have stayed in a funk like that. The rough defense and the extreme physical play of the game was typical of 80s and 90s basketball. Mourning and Rodman were old school tough guys that would go out and whip ass.

@gbinct that is true but it came back on him later. Like when he shoved Pippen off the court for no good reason the year the Bulls finally beat the Pistons, I think that was out of frustration. And Pippen didn't retaliate, he kept his cool. Then Rodman probably even felt stupider when the Bulls were nice enough to have him join their team. But as for legitimate skills he's obviously one of the best.

Those heat fans are REAL heat fans not some bandwagoners after someone took their talents to south beach

You have to put Jordan numbers in perspective. The season before Scottie Pippen came, Jordan averaged 30ppg, 8rpg, and 8rpg, plus a span of 10 triple doubles in 11 games. When Pippen started to develop Jordan decided to play within the triangle system and let Scottie run the point and Jordan play off the ball, but in the 1991 Finals Jordan averaged 31.2ppg, 6.6rpg, and 11.4apg on 57.4% shooting. Plus I think Lebron should been broke that triple double mark by now.
