  • That Model Railway Guy reviews the New Caledonian 812 from Bachmann and Rails Of Sheffield.
    MERCH: shop.thatmodelrailwayguy.com
    The Caledonian 812 from Bachmann and Rails Of Sheffield has finally arrived but it looks like it was worth the wait. You guys know I'm a sucker for a good looking 0-6-0 and in this preserved blue livery the Caledonian 812 ticks all the boxes.
    That said, at almost £200 it is an expensive loco for an 0-6-0 and (given that these are available exclusively from Rails Of Sheffield) it's not like you get a bit of a discount at the retailers. Will the pretty livery of the Caley 812 be enough to win people over or will it be a more niche model to satisfy the Scottish market? To find out my thoughts check out the video and let me know what you think in the comments below!

    I loved the Caledonian Railway livery when years and years ago Hornby brought out the small saddle tank - great to see a larger loco in this livery. Looked great running on your layout and thank you for another great review.

      Awesome, yeah it would be lovely to see some more locos done in the Caledonian livery. Maybe given that the 812 seems to be going down well it might inspire other manufactures to pay more attention to the Scottish region. Thanks for watching 😃

    Yes, this locomotive is fantastic. The blue livery gives it a majestic look. It is indeed expensive for an analog locomotive, probably they thought that everyone is going to add a decoder and use it digital anyway. Which is not necessarily true, I’m sure I am not the only one operating analog only. Looking to this locomotive I am always thinking I should start adding UK locomotives to my collection 😁 they are sooo beautiful 😍
    Good review, I only wished you’d use a thin brush instead of that sharp screwdriver for pointing out details on the model. It’s scary to watch, especially in close up. 😱 It gives of course some extra tension to the video: will or won’t the model survive the video unscratched? 😉😁
    Happy 2022! 🎉 Greetings from Belgium 🙋‍♂️ Erik

      Yeah I do think that a lot of Bachmann's new releases are only really worth it if you can make full use of all the DCC extras. The Class 47 is another example of this - the high price is worth it to get all the extras but the standard DC model isn't that much different than the old model, aside from the price of course!
      Haha, it always surprises me how everyone gets scared of the screwdriver. I swear next time I film a review I'm going to have to do a behind the scenes shot to show how the screwdriver is really nowhere near the model. Thanks for watching 😃

    Been waiting for this since it was first announced back in 2018. Got the as-built blue as I think it more befitting for Caley locos, so beautiful with any kind of stock behind it. Lets hope we get to see more CR locos in future (Cardean please!)

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome, yeah I was tempted by the lighter blue version too as it does look good. As I'm building a heritage layout though the preservation model was more suitable. I hope we see more Caledonian locos too! Who knows, maybe it'll be the next pre-grouping craze like the SE&CR has been. Thanks for watching 😃

    Thanks for doing this, That Model Railway Guy. Since seeing it in the last live stream I've been using my TS version a lot! They compare quite favorably, if not identically. Yours seems like a beautifully detailed, smooth running gem, worth the 200 quid these days. No one said model railways was a cheap hobby, since the 60s when I started to the present day. There's stuff going on here that we couldn't dream of back then, when Pacific Fast Mail was top of the heap. I really love these 0-6-0s, as the arrangement was both useful and popular. It's what railways needed, and it worked, from the tiny Class Ps and Terriers, through the 57xx's and Fowler 4Fs, to the mighty Q1, I love 'em all, not glamorous normally, but work-a-day champions. Terrific review, That Model Railway Guy, hope to see more.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! Yeah I think as the quality of our models has increased the prices naturally rise to reflect that and we do get quite a lot for our money in some cases. I've always had a soft spot for 0-6-0's though (both tank engines and tender engines) so it's nice to see another one on the market in a nice colourful livery too. Thanks for watching 😃

    Brilliant review of the class 812, love the livery on it and and a smashing runner and the firebox glow finishes it off nicely, I agree with the loco and tender connection but hopefully bachmann will update it, good job 👍🏻

      Thanks Adam, yeah it is a superb loco all round and the firebox glow is a nice feature. I'm just surprised that they bothered to update the DCC socket from 21Pin to Next18 but left the old style tender connection, just seems like a silly design choice to me. Thanks for watching 😃

    Fantastic cab, really the part that seperates avarage models from great ones In my opinion. Can't say the price is that chocking though, over here in Scandinavia where german locos dominate the market, a good one is between 300 and up to a 1000 (in extreme cases) euros in HO scale.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cab is definitely one of the best I've seen! Yeah I think in the UK we often forget how lucky we are. We certainly get a lot for our money in comparison to the European and American prices from what I can see. Thanks for watching 😃

    For the tender connexion, you have Dapol and the others...
    By the way, Bachmann have made a copernician revolution on their mechanisms : their last models (Johnson 1P and 94xx to name I've bought, even if the last is too fast running) have a great mechanism, far from their low-end ones they used before.
    Last but not least, the finish is fantastic. A nice engine to have, even if over twice the price of an equivalent like the Oxford Rail J27.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I have to say the mechanism in this seems fantastic! It's a really smooth runner and has been doing laps of my almost constantly for the past week without a single issue. It certainly does seem like a high quality model so hopefully we're seeing somewhat of a resurgence from Bachmann. Thanks for watching 😃

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is awesome isn't it! If you've got one of the black ones I can see why you'd want to make it Donald or Douglas - it'd be a shame to paint over one of the blue liveries though. At the end of the day though it's your model, you can do what you like. Thanks for watching 😃

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes indeed they do - it just seemed weird to me that the boxes were printed incorrectly as I can't imagine swapping the decoder from 21 pin to Next18 was a last minute change. Thanks for watching 😃

    @christopherstokes9393 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lovely little loco! It is expensive for its size - but then, I guess it is a niche model, and that attracts a premium.
    What I'd say is: it's worth it if you specifically want an 812 (or specifically want a Scottish model) - but otherwise, it's probably better to get something else for less money.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you've hit the nail on the head there Christopher. If you specifically want an 812 for your layout then you'll probably pay the price but otherwise there are similar options that come at a much lower price point. Thanks for watching 😃

  • @redversb2347
    @redversb2347 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A beautiful looking locomotive but sadly outside what I'd be prepared to pay at the moment. Sorely tempted though as I really like 0-6-0 tender engines. Thanks for the review.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think a lot of people will have that opinion too. It is nice but as the prices go up less people will be tempted to buy... which inevitably means the prices go up even more to cover that. I know what you mean though, 0-6-0s are often wonderful engines! Thanks for watching 😃

  • @paulisnotonfire
    @paulisnotonfire 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd really like to get one of these, as the preserved livery one looks really fantastic and is something different. But at the minute I can't justify the price, not when the Rails/Heljan NER Autocar is coming out soon and I have that to pay for.
    I hope at least for the price Bachmann have put metal bearings on the driving axles, as that's something that they don't do often on steam locomotives.
    Cheers

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think a lot of people will agree with you there. It's a lovely looking loco but the livery alone may not be enough for people to get them for non-Caledonian layouts.
      It does seems like Bachmann have moved away from not having bearings in their steam locos lately. It certainly runs very smoothly so I would imagine it does have proper bearings. Thanks for watching 😃

    Beautiful model, terrible price. I don't really get the "premium price for a niche model" argument when this essentially looks like every other 0-6-0 apart from the unique livery, should you even choose that option. Something like KR Models' GT3 I can certainly get but even the similarly Scottish J36 from Hornby was significantly cheaper. It just seems like Rails and Bachmann are trying to make a quick buck under the guise of exclusivity, and this along with the Hornby Hush-Hush debacle just kinda come off as willfully anti-consumer. That being said, I have the as-built blue one on order and it should be in next week. I wish I had known how many of the premium features would have been behind the DCC paywall but hey, it looks pretty, right?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's be more about the size of a production run than anything else. Hornby generally do larger batches and as a result we saw the J36's heavily discounted not long after their initial release which can't have been good for them.
      With the 812 being a commission I imagine it's a much shorter production run which means they have to make more profit on each model. Don't forget that Rails will have to share part of that profit with Bachmann too, which again brings the price up. Of course I don't know any of this for certain but certainly from an outside perspective that's what it seems to me. Thanks for watching 😃
