    Oak Street is a relatively new boot company founded in 2009 and it has Chicago in its DNA - everything is made with material from the city’s Horween Leather Company and Oak Street is even named after an area in its Gold Coast neighborhood.
    The Trench boot is their most popular boot and the most popular leather for it is Natural Chromexcel. Let’s dive in.
    ** SEE MY 5 FAVORITE BOOTS OF 2018 HERE: • THE 5 BEST MEN'S BOOTS... **
    OVERVIEW
    This has a really uncomplicated, plain toe, service boot aesthetic that I really liked. Some people think the toe is too “duckbilly” but I find it’s the kind of minimalist boot that let’s the construction and the leather quality speak for itself. It also comes with rawhide laces which normally I’m not a fan of, but I think the color works great with the natural leather.
    Otherwise the leather is a gorgeous blonde, the sole is a slick Dainite rubber, it’s partly lined with calfskin, and there’s enough stitching to suggest it’s well made without trying too hard in the durability category.
    READ THE FULL REVIEW, GOOGLE: STRIDEWISE OAK STREET
    OAK STREET LEATHER
    Quality control-wise I had no issues with the leather at all: zero loose grain, zero premature creasing. The leather wears well and it looks great, unlike my Wolverine 1000 Miles which creased a ton.
    ** See more in my Wolverine Vs Thursday video: • Wolverine Vs. Thursday... **
    This is natural Chromexcel®, a combination tanned leather that undergoes 89 processes taking 28 working days to make using all five floors of Horween’s facility. The leather is a little over 2 millimeters thick and what’s cool about natural leather is that it doesn’t show scratches or creases quite as easily as a brown boot.
    OAK STREET SOLE
    The outsole is Dainite, a great combination of grip, durability, and flexibility. It’s also way easier to clean than a leather sole and it looks a lot better as it ages.
    After the Dainite there are oiled leather waterlock soles, which is one reason this is a particularly water resistant boot. Another is the 360-degree Goodyear welt, which puts a canvas rib between the upper and the sole and allows for easier resoling.
    ** Like simple service boots? See my comparison of ALDEN VS ALLEN EDMONDS VS GRANT STONE: • Alden vs Allen Edmonds... **
    OAK STREET FIT & SIZING
    Sizes run from 7 to 14 and there’s just one width available right now, so wide or narrow feet are out of luck. They fit true to size, so no need to order a size down here.
    I had no issues wearing these in, but I will say my toes tended to slide down to the end of the boot, which I didn’t like.
    OAK STREET PRICE
    This can change, but right now it’s $462 for a pair of these with the Dainite sole. They’re more expensive with a toe cap and less expensive with leather soles, so you have options.
    ** Is the very pricy Viberg worth $700? Find out in my video: • REVIEW: Is the Viberg ... **
    VERDICT
    Pros:
    Great quality leather
    Simple aesthetic
    Unusually water resistant
    Cons:
    Not the best fit
    Just one width available
    Pricy

    Thanks for this review, Nick. I own the Oak Street Cap Toe Trench Boot in Badalassi Nemesi Cotto leather, which were marked down 40% from $548; a more palatable price considering there were a few cosmetic QC issues that I trust will not affect the longevity of the boots. Although Oak Street boots are on the Elstane Last and sized in a standard D width, the generous toe box accommodated my orthotics and started to loosen enough for my wide, flat feet. I ordered true to size. I am pleased with the purchase and the excellent customer service at Oak Street Bootmakers - and they come with nice boot bags. 🙂

    Great job. You called my attention to Oak Street a while back in comments on your Viberg vs Alden comparison. I am interested in their calfskin Field Boot - I like the speed hooks and Vibram half sole. Am not sure I like the cap toe but it's growing on me! A strong rival, for my selection, is the Grant Stone Cap Toe or the Diesel Boot. I just got a pair of their Brass Boots and love the quality materials and workmanship. No loose threads for sure.

    HEY HEY! Been waiting for this review! Glad you liked them. I love the fit on both my pairs. I have quite wide feet and they fit me perfectly. Got a pair with leather sole and another with Dainite. I do prefer the feel of the leather sole. Another great vid mate. Keep up the stellar work!

      Yeah I agree leather soles feel better than Dainite, they just aren't better when it comes to aesthetics or durability or or grip so I don't love them. But they do *feel* nice. A tricky quandary!

    Hey Nick, first of all great videos. I've binge watch all the videos haha. In my honest opinion best complete reviews. Enjoy how you always incorporate both positive and negative aspects of the boots you review. Also enjoy your implication of the boots to everyday situations. I purchased a pair of Thursday Captain Natural thanks to your recommendation. Anyhow, is there a chance for reviews in the future about either harness or engineer boots? Are those outside of your taste in boots? I would jump with joy to see you do a review of some. Looking at Frye John Addison boots at the moment. Thanks and greetings from San Diego, CA :)

    @Stridewise I would love to see a Thursday Vanguard review! I just purchased a pair recently and I'm having doubts. I could have paid a little more to get a solid work boot or I could have spent a little less on a solid fashion boot. The Vanguards are in that awkward middle territory. One boot also shipped with some loose grain, but I didn't want to bother going through the refund/ exchange process since there's no telling if the next boots would be in better or worse condition. This is coming from someone without much boot experience, as this is only my second pair of boots. I just need to feel validated in my choice of picking the Vanguards over the Captains haha. Great review by the way, as always!

    Hi Nick, i have to agree with you on about everything with this boot. My foot slides to the front for some reason, duckbilly a bit but they are very beautiful boot. It seems the boot really hugs the top of my toes though, not much height in the toebox but does not hurt, i dont think sizing up would help for me, i ordered true to size and they are fine. A lot of wheeling on mine on the ankle stitching but does not bother me at all. Side profile is beautiful, top profile is ducky like you say but we are the only ones from that point of view. Thanks for your review!

      My first pair of Oak Street Cap Toe Trench boots had same issue of my right toe pressing the top of the toe box. It was kinda of annoying. I ended up sending them back as the leather footbed delaminated from the poron below it (strange construction these boots have). Since Oak Street agreed to replace my boots (after going back and forth with them via email), I talked about the toe issue and fit. They suggested I go up a half size from my Brannock. That ended up solving the toe issue. These boots are more comfortable, without my toe hitting the top of the boot anymore. The only downside is they are slightly too wide now. Not ridiculously so, but I think I will try wearing some boot socks with them instead of my usual “normal” socks. Hoping that fills in the extra space a bit. Long story short, you may want to try on a pair 1/2 size larger than your Brannock if you have same toe issue.

    • @liljuanito123
      @liljuanito123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EDHBlvd so I tried them on with some boot socks and they actually don't fit. I compared them to my Trumans in 9 and they are definitely shorter, also the ball of my foot is not at the widest part. I probably need s 9.5. Thanks for your help.

    I’ve had a pair of these in black with dainite for a couple of years. He’s correct about sliding forward in them. It’s horrible. After I put some Dr Scholls in there to deal with the lack of arch support, the sliding stopped and now they are super comfortable. They look like they would be bulky and heavy but they’re not heavy. There is loose grain on one of the quarters which annoys me, but at least it’s on the outside and I don’t have to see it much.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So glad you had the same experience! I mean I'm not glad you had annoying boots but it's nice to hear I'm not the only one. That's a great recommendation on Dr. Scholls, I'll add it to my written review - which insert in particular did you use?

I normally have darker color boots (not black) with darker color jeans (not black either). Would you pair these natural boots with a dark color nice fitted jean or would your tan/ green etc colors work better?

  • @RyanKentBarnhart
    @RyanKentBarnhart 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I guess my question is are they really worth 2.5 pairs of Thursday Boots? I've got a pair of Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill in brown, like them a lot. But now I'm looking for a pair of black and the Thursday Book Captain seems like the logical choice. I'm also considering Viberg service boots. If they're really worth the extra money I don't mind spending it.

    • @RyanKentBarnhart
      @RyanKentBarnhart 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ended up buying the Thursday Captain. Only had them a month or so, but thus far I'm pleased. Viberg not offering wide sizes, and not having a place to try them on, were the deciding factors. Sure, they have "free" returns, but you're still spending for shipping in BOTH directions.

      That's too bad they have the Vanguard in Natural but with the big sole you don't want! They're Goodyear welted so you could always have the sole swapped out, of course, but that costs extra. Otherwise they have the regular president/captain in natural.

      You would likely need an 11.5 or 12 in these boots. I originally ordered an 11.5, as that is my Brannock (Heel to Toe) measurement. Unfortunately as many complain, including Nick, there is an issue with your toes hitting the top of the toe box. I talked to Oak Street about this when I was sending my first pair back due to a production defect, and they suggested going up a half size (to 12). That seemed to be the right decision as the fit is much more comfortable. No more odd feeling of my toe pressing the top of the boot on my right foot.

I own about 50+ pairs of boots, mostly heritage type, and I was looking to add the Thursday president in black and the Thursday Vanguard (which is $60-ish more). This is a great review, but I have a question as to how long it takes to have the cork bed midsole form to your feet on your pair of Thursday boots. Also on my pair of Thursday’s, there seems to be little dents on the inside of the shoe at the heel area. They seem to match the little metal things at the bottom of the heel, idk if this is bad or something... they also kinda wrinkle, like the tiny wrinkles when you bend... I’m new to this. And the Eva comfort strip seem to offer no comfort for me, kinda just makes the bottom feel smooth. Did you experience any of these things around the start of when you got your pair?

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man, it took me about a week for the Dura EVA strip to mold to my foot, the cork will take a bit longer - as with most boots they sort of keep getting more comfortable over time, just be patient. The comfort strip for me is more about shock absorption than softness, if that makes sense. If you're talking about the leather wrinkling yeah that'll happen and it's fine, if you want to minimize it (or even if you don't) you should get some shoe trees.

    Nick, I bought a pair of these based off the positive reviews, but I gotta say I’m disappointed in this brand. The unboxing was amazing, but after a single day of wear, the leather footbed came lose from the bottom of the shoe. It seems they have a false footbed with foam below it for comfort. There must have been a defect in the manufacturing, either not enough glue or the glue failed. I reached out to Oak Street and they said if I send back for repair it may take up to 1 month. They suggested I just find a cobbler to repair. This is not a luxurious experience at all. I was ready to buy more Oak Street products (beef roll loafers), but after this I’ll pass on this brand.

      @@Stridewise After expressing my disappointment, they offered to replace the boots. So I have a new pair. I’m a little uneasy about the quality (the insole issue on first pair), welt stitch holes visible around the whole bottom of the toe box, and wavy stitching in the cap toe. That said, I’m pleased they were willing to replace the boots after I expressed my frustration with the failure after 1 day of wear.
