- Bilbao is a less visited but increasingly popular destination. The Academy of Urbanism awarded it Best European City 2018. When you vacation abroad, you want to go to a peaceful, temperate and lush place. The unhurried pace and ease of access are unparalleled. It is an expensive city to stay and dine in, but there are several pensions (Pensiones) that are very comfortable and cheaper than any Motel 6 in the American mid-west. I planned my June 2018 trip with no fore knowledge of the city and region. I looked into the Metro and learned that it was designed by Sir Norman Foster. It opened 23 years ago, and will not look dated for many decades to come.
The video opens with an appropriate musical selection with just a tease of the metro. If you have time, sit through the entire intro to attain appropriate context for the amazing metro I will take you on a tour of.
In addition to the two 1990s metro lines, the legacy Euskotren Trena has just been upgraded and routed through a new city tunnel, forming Line 3. I photographed some information panels that explain a lot of this.
Why the USA refuses to seriously expand transit in the face of its popularity and success everywhere is the most frustrating and confounding thing to me. Excuses abound, but where does the money really go? There is lots of it here, yet we are endlessly propagandized to believe we just can't afford or don't deserve appropriate public transit. The 'love affair' with automobiles is the longest lived myth and foundational lie supporting the whole heaving wreck of American autopia. To support an extra few years of autopia, we are using the last of cheaper fossil fuels to poke hundreds of thousands of toxic holes in our own land. Fracked wells deplete very quickly, and their operations will necessarily expand into populated states like New York in the future.

Mi ciudad favorita de España, algún día la conoceré, Dios mediante. Que hermosa, que clima, que vegetación, que arquitectura!, perdón! sin ánimos de ofender pero a mí no me vengan hablar de Barcelona, Madrid o Sevilla, Bilbao tiene algo que no se explicar que me atrae.
Todas son ciudades hermosas, pero Bilbao por ser Vasca es .. como decirlo especial

Supongo que evolucionaron desde el Señorío de Vizcaya Provincia de Castilla a Reino de España Comunidad Autónoma volvamos a los Tiempos de cuando los vascos eran fieles servidores de España
@@gontzallekzeit2050 ¡Pero si se escucha más euskera en Madrid que en Bilbao, que estáis asimilados a Castilla! Los catalanes al menos han mantenido su lengua viva (la entiende el 97% de la población catalana, la sabe hablar el 80% y es materna en un 40%). Con esos datos puede que tengan más opciones que los vascos para una eventual independencia futura, y tendría más sentido. Tú solo mira las diferencias de audiencia de ETB 1 y ETB 2... compra pañuelos.

There are basically four mass transit systems in Bilbao Area: Street level tramway: Bilbao Metro (subway); Renfe operated Cercanias (suburban rail Iberia gauge); Euskotren (suburban rail narrow gauge, linking nearby towns and beyond)

Euskotren also operates the tramway som bus lines and some subway lines

Only few are not included: -ex-Feve and now Renfe Balmaseda-Bilbao Concodia meter line plus regional services to Santander city;
-Begoña Elevator in an impresive 1940s Art Deco tower (who is out of use in bad state);
and three funiculars: urban Artxanda, Santurtzi village who connect with Metro, and rural Reineta.

@@elikertxu5555 Pues la verdad es que sí. Son ciudades grandes para lo que es Asturias y aunque no conectarse Avilés, podría conectar Oviedo y Gijón al menos.
Ahorraría tiempo y libraría espacio en las carreteras ya que sería más rápido y barato viajar entre las ciudades

It is a british legacy. Due to our deep relationship with Britain there are plenty of british like details in Bilbao, being the name of our football club one of those.
