  • In 2016, the disposable income of people with disabilities was $465 billion in the U.S. alone. But despite their purchasing power, fashion and design companies have largely ignored the needs of people living with disabilities.
Christina Mallon, Jillian Mercado and Nick Santonastasso all live with disabilities. Because the worlds of fashion and design have largely ignored them, they have stepped forward to fill the gap.

This is very interesting. Never really thought about the needs of disabled people. This has opened my mind

I'm a quadriplegic very slim built so that means that muscles I have lost on my shoulders and my packs are very obvious. Every time I would put a t-shirt on even though I'm slim and don't have a big stomach it still pops out and it looks like I do because of my upper body being smaller now. One time I went to a costume party and had a spiderman costume on with all the padded muscles, and when I looked myself in the mirror I felt such confidence. Since then I have a custom made t-shirt with small cotton padding on my shoulders and my chest, that way when I put a jumper over it my body looks almost fully abeled. I wish I knew where to go and get something made properly that wouldn't stretch and be short lived. I got the idea from watching movie starts getting their cosmetics done on for the movie role.

I left a handful of word salad comments. ( I tend to run with a brainstorming crowd ). I wrote, ( in other words ) Brick and Mortar Laundry services will often have a Seamstress. I'd call around. UUUUhhhhhh new idea... there are companies that have APPS that take your picture sideways and frontways i guess.... then custom fit /sew your clothes

I have become a weelchair user due to illness and finding clothing I like has being a challenge. It nice to see more brands having adapted lines. I have autism and magnetic and velcro facings would have being so useful as a child

How about making adaptive clothing in natural fibers and for those who need to dress modestly.

ONE more thing !!!! many people are not aware but if you find a Laundry business check and see what kinds of alterations they will make. I ran an errand for somebody to get a zipper moved and hems taken up for under 10-20$

I am always trying to enable myself even though I have a "normal" body, and with normal health. ::Random thoughts... there are hanging screen doors that have magnets on each side:::: magnets are used to clean aquariums, large windows in tall buildings, hmmm used to grab keys stuck inside a car..... :::: A non magnet idea, maybe like how life vests on airplanes can auto inflate, but if that fails there are tubes. what about using thin tubes inflate or deflate to fill gaps like a shoulder pad, or maybe inflates the length of a pant leg so it is more rigid to get a foot through. Bouncy houses::::crazy inflating dancers outside car sales lots to grab attention....getting dressed infront of a fan...... gadda go, maybe more later

oh I saw videos of SPRAY ON clothing. I don't know if they use some nasty chemical, but there are others that grow wear-ables out of mushroom mycelium. THATS a big project! hahaha okay, one other thought, Thai style pants are interesting if they can be layed out on a bed ( it will look like really big hourglass with tie downs on the side and they come in some realllllly awesome looking fabrics !!!! ) , you could then sit on them and pull up the part hanging down and start securing them.
