    You asked for opinions so here’s a couple of tips for ballpoint portraiture realism that I’ve learnt as a freelance portrait artist using only ballpoints (I have been doing this for over 5 years now):
    try to avoid hard outlines, particularly for features other than eyes/eyelids, nostrils and eyebrow hairs;
    your best friend for realism is fine cross hatching and layering and alternating the directions of this; start off with a light foundation and build upwards because pen cannot be undone, this also creates a softness that allows you to blend easily between shade and highlights;
    to avoid unwanted clumps of ink, keep a scrap piece of paper or even regular tissue and roll off your pen after each time you take your hand away from the page for more than a couple of seconds; this prevents the ink gathering at the ball and producing a splodge (for want of a better word) when you touch the pen down again, this is particularly important for when you’re working on highlights and lighter areas and also hair.
    If you’ve read all of this, I hope it’s useful to you 😄 have a nice day!

      Serious question, how long does one of these drawings take for your ball point portraits?
      Is there anywhere online you can recommend to be able to learn this style of drawing?

    • @CaptainBucky
      @CaptainBucky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      Michael Carlton My portraits can take anywhere up to 4 weeks to complete because of their size, for me this also depends on the hair length/style/type, skin (as darker skin colours take more layers to build up) and also any clothing/accessories that are being worn.
      I would recommend just having a look around TH-cam and observe the techniques of artists, there are also many good ballpoint artists on Instagram (@/oscarukonu and @/samiadagher are amazing examples to observe) 😄👍

    • @fish_butcher2255
      @fish_butcher2255 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      also carefully using slightly damped cottonswap with fine eaven crosshatching you can get beautyful blending and smoother look! My self i use really hard pencil to sctech and not do any line work with ballpoint pen, just hard shadows where its needed. Patience and layering is the key ;

    The hardest thing about capturing realism, especially for someone who is mostly an illustrator, is the tendency to concentrate too much on the edges of the subjects. In reality, nothing has a distinct edge, especially a biological/organic structure. Rather, they curve away from or towards the viewer, and are never a hard edge with as much contrast as we have an inclination to draw them with. This is hard to capture in a realistic way with many mediums.

      The edges we see are a byproduct of the image processing our brains perform to identify objects from the background. It's a neat little trick...algorithm inside of our brains.
      From an optical perspective, our eyes have a focal length of about 50mm with optical distortions. Our brains perform error correction and processing to fix this. We also have two eyes which are actually too close to create real stereoscopic view, but our brains use the ever slight differences and processing to create our binocular view. I could go on and on, but the key to realistic art on a 2D surface is to fool our brains into believing it has 3D depth and it isn't a flat image. Of course, in some cases you want a flat image in the case of illustration.

I instantly noticed this because the eyes in a portrait are one of the most important features you have to get right, because more often than not that's where most peoples eyes go to first. That's not to say it isn't a good portrait, since it is amazing that this was done with a ballpoint pen, but there is room for improvement.

      the right eye is drooped down a bit, which is not... really... okay, at all, the eyes are the things that you need to get right, theyre the first things you look at on a portrait, eyes are something that you need to get down pat, otherwise the drawing won't look right, i do this weird thing where i use a ruler to get eye size and spacing right, but it works, if you dont wanna do that it's fine, there are many ways to make sure your eyes look symmetrical and detailed, so please use them, otherwise its gonna muck up your work

    Cool story: when I went to school we had to do an ink-drawing of a painting for homework. I didn't know she meant for us to use actual ink and a brush, but because we didn't have it, I used a ball pen instead, because it's technically also ink and I knew they couldn't give me a bad grade for it.
    When I turned it in, the teacher, who was like a down-to-earth artist type, praised my creative take on the assignment and I honestly still feel proud about it.

    For anyone curious, at about 12:18 Jazza says that the pens don't give any gradient or shading that's actually untrue. Ballpoint pens do have pressure sensitivity and ability to give light vs dark lines similar to pencils. It isn't as fine as you can get with pencils, especially if you have various hardnesses of pencil, but it's far from zero. Just google photo realistic ballpoint drawings, you'll come up with hundreds of examples. One of the keys is working very large, because when you back away and view it at a "normal" size, your eyes do a natural blending. It's similar to billboard signs if you ever get a chance to view them up close, they are not smooth solid images.

    How amazing to watch Jazza, get motivated to draw, get disappointed of your drawing and lose motivation, go back again to watch jazza to repeat the endless cicle! :)
