My new Impact Sprinklers, Rain Bird and Champ - Favorites

  • I received two new, old Champ U61D models, needing a little attention. One with a blocked nozzle, and the other with a bent reversing mechanism. I put both in a cleaning bath and it made a huge difference. I brought out a RainTrol as a comparison to the Champ models. The basic model is the same, but there are some differences between them. When I first removed the nozzle to clean it out from the sand blocking it, I realized it was about the same as the old Armstrong nozzle I had in a bunch of old sprinklers I have from the 1960's. Before putting this to a test, I lighten the tension on the spring to make what you see in the operation a much slower arm swing and the scoot moving in reverse.
The Rain Bird model 25PJ with the tube is one of my favorites over the newer design by the same model design. This one seems to be similar to other Rain Bird designs where the washer wears unevenly, where other brands, that does not seem to be the case. I put an o-ring on the nipple to help with the water leakage from the washer. It seemed to help, even though not perfect.
The tests starts at the 13:57 minute mark, I hope you enjoy them.

Great selection of impacts. An easy fix with the blocked nozzle and bent reverse mechanism. They run very well.

Nice champ and RB impacts. Don't think when I was a kid that I heard of champ but I did have a Nelson Alpha II that a elderly lady gave me on a custom wood base that had the nut on top of the head. Was out of a popup. I also remember this house with the old 25PJs on risers. Quite a sight to see them run. Nice cleaning fixing and test of them too.

Thank you, like you I did not know of the Champ brand. Actually in my teens I knew of Rain Bird, Raintime, Nelson, and a forgotten Armstrong. Nelson came along a little later in my years, but I knew of other off brands like Lego that came around out of no where. I was not familiar with the Alpha model, but got one of the original Beta models and was delighted when the PJ version of the Beta showed up.

I have more that I forgot that I had and likely more that I still have not pulled out. The U61D is a favorite design, but I have a U61A that I am cleaning up and getting ready to share in video.

Enjoyed the comparisons. Did the other plastic nozzle you took out of the Champion sprinkler say Rain Trol. Every plastic nozzle I’ve taken out of a Western Brass Works sprinkler was branded as Rain Trol regardless of the rest of the sprinkler.

I will have to look to see if there is a marking, but initially I saw no indication that it did. I am sure they are all pretty similar if not identical. I have metal nozzles that I have purchased, but these seem adequate for now.
