My wife and I caught our first fox Monday, I set the trap and she did the checking, but he’s a nice pretty male and I used this video to learn how to skin him out so she can do a wall hanger with it! This fox was the first animal of any quality that we’ve caught! Just started right before Christmas! Great videos!
Stu, this video was literally perfect timing for me. I watched it earlier today and per your instructions put up a red fox this afternoon feet on and split ears. Everything went exactly as you instructed except I found fleshing a fox kinda tedious. I took the saddle off but found it very difficult to get of the thin underlying fat off evenly. The pelt was cold too. I’ve watched your complete fur handling series but could you do a video specifically about fleshing again. Could you even get a close up of the fleshing knife to flesh angle so that we could see it in greater detail. I’ve got everything going good except the fleshing. I’d really appreciate a detailed fleshing video.
Awesome video! Keep the fur handling and trapping videos coming. I watch all of your videos and I’m trapping this year for the first time thanks to your content.
love your fur handling videos stew. wish you make a dvd so i had it to reference for life in case youtube gets even more nuts. love your videos man as always
Thanks for a great video, as always. Your the best guy on TH-cam. The other day there was a Grey Fox that was hit on the side of the road. he was in perfect condition, but I was unsure on how to process him. Now I know.
Another awsome fur handling video! 👍, im always recommending your channel to young coyote hunters who need to know the next steps after harvesting yoties or fox ..
Dude you made it look so easy I tried my first skinning of Fox that got killed by car and it took me like 3-4 hrs to skin flesh and board with the ears and feet although I don’t have your equipment experience or skills I goterdone couldn’t have done it with out your instructions, Thanks man!
I’m self-teaching myself how to tan, and I’ve got to say, your video’s are fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us and the world!! 🥰🥰💖💖 Especially when you aren’t charging, because there are people like me who are basically broke af but NEED the skill, and everyone is playing ‘keep away’ with me when I try to get answers from them 😠 So I thank you again, from the bottom of my heart 💖
I made your machine for skinning a couple of years ago. To pull tails, especially on coyotes, I use a metal tail stripper when you get the core of the tail exposed. Once I have it around the core I lower the animal to the point where I can put one side of the tail stripper in to one of the clamps. Then I use a pair of vice grips to hold the other side of the stripper. While holding the stripper level I pull the animal up and the tail comes out using the machine. An alternative is to pull the tail by hand rather than using the machine but still having it secured in the clamp. Saves a lot of struggling to get the tail out.
You ever thought about making dvds or books i feel like they'd do well. I've learned almost everything fur handling from you and also some good tips on tanning.
Coon creek outdoors .... you should definitely do a tanning episode on the fox I really appreciate the videos you post ... very educational... I’m sure I could watch other TH-cam videos on it but I’d rather see how it’s done by you
Thanks i will check out your playlist We tann rabbits hides but im a beginner Ive tried egg tanning on a few after scraping and salting And have tried that Alum and salt brew I prefer egg tanning but for many at once it be the brew Interesting in learning other techniques thats how we found you Thanks
Always love your vids. Very informative. Heard a shout out for you on trapping today about tanning gods and your instructional vids. 👍🏼 been a sub for years
Thanks for posting this, just tried my first fox a customer at my job shot and gave to me. Everything went good except the tail :( Brok off and then I ripped the skin trying to get the rest out, but think I will try to sew it back.
Pretty interesting, never seen how it was actually done .i know a lot of the guys up north do it on a lot there critters, especially on wolf and wolverines.thanks for your time
Just wanted to thank you for all the great videos you put together I have a few questions. I do a little fly tying and materials are not cheap, so I try to collect my materials from the hunting I do.The question I have is how do I get the hides I harvest to have a thicker skin more like a Suede Like skin rather than a thin one I get from just using borax to dry it. Rabbit and squirrel in particular. Thanks in advance
What's the price difference between selling raw for fur or selling your services to tan a wall hanging? Thank you for these videos! Pretty proud of my coyote you taught me to do! I would recommend a more detailed video of just skinning the face. I got very confused about ears and eyes.... I did what you said to do and it came out great but I don't understand why or how 😅🤦♀️ thank you!!!! 🙏 .... also my neighbor does mink and said to use salt not borax but couldn't really tell me why... 🧐
Salt is better for tanning. Borax can mess with your pickle (salt bath, very acidic) pH. Salt also draws out more gunk from the skin. This is a good skill to have! You can get good money if you sell to taxidermists.
If you're gonna tan it yourself, you can just salt the whole thing after fleshing, and let it dry fur side in like that. Use a belly wedge, but you don't really need to pin it with salt. Next day, put fresh salt on/in. I have had issues with ears and the cartilage with esp Tubari fur dressers. But this year I had some with Moyles. Hair comes off the ears and around them. It bothers me so much that I am doing customer foxes via salting and in-shop tanning. I lost a trapping customer to Tubari's mess. They are fine if you want hides to make a blanket, or Russian style hats. But the trapper was really pissed about it, and a shame as he is the only trapper I know of near me. Foxes are notorious for fur slippage on the ears. I'm a taxidermist of 26 years, and been trapping 20 years. The other problem is where I am it gets warmer every winter, and I don't have that cold workplace that ears can cure at slower and better ( in my opinion, and I am really missing doing hay sets in snow).
So I have a fox in the freezer right now and I just cannot seem to keep the tail on any animal that I have skinned or helped skin, so I was looking for some pointers on repairing a tail on a fox. It just ripped off about half way down
How do we put those animals down without blowing a big hole in'em. Even a 22 makes a significant exit. Or is that exit hole acceptable to deal with later.?
Fantastic! Hands down - the guy's a pro. I'm dying to get up into the hills north of my home territory and get some traps out. I have mostly Bridgers, 1.5's. What do you recommend, or use, for canines CCO?
My boyfriend and I found a little baby fox who was hit by a car, had a snapped neck. Other than that, the body is in really great condition, although neither of us have EVER done this before
How do you keep your knife from cutting to deep? I always struggle With cutting down into the muscle. I try to lift the knife but then I’m unable to make a single cut. I always end up cutting about an inch and the blade pops out.
Getting ready to do my first fox today watched your video several times great material very informative first fox feet on here we go thanks

Awesome job showing the ears and feet! I got my first coyote last year and tried it and it took me a while to figure it out.

Thanks for posting this. I was wanting to do this with my first coyote
Really glad you made this video.
Soooo explanatory! Thank you! Loved it!
You ever thought about making dvds or books i feel like they'd do well. I've learned almost everything fur handling from you and also some good tips on tanning.

Excellent video!! Thanks for your detail
Very helpful will have to try this.
Thanks
Your fur handling is the best! Thank you for all the great videos Ive learned so much watching you!!
Great video lots of details 👍
Thank you!!! I've been waiting for a video like this for a while :)
I think that you should set up a web site to sell some pelts online for wall hangers to make some extra money when fur prices are low.
Awesome, detailed video! Thanks!
Very interesting lots of good info
Great video! Really liked the details

Awesome job, thanks for sharing with us pal
Great job on the demo Stu and thanks for sharing with us. Later buddy and all the best.
Like the orthopedic guys. They come down to the ER with carpenter's tools. LOL!
Can you make a video on how you made your skinning winch thing?

We tann rabbits hides but im a beginner
Ive tried egg tanning on a few after scraping and salting
And have tried that Alum and salt brew
I prefer egg tanning but for many at once it be the brew
Interesting in learning other techniques thats how we found you
Thanks
What do you mean by over fleshing? And the sadle is that like the middle of the back? Thanks for this informative video
empty paper towel rolls work awesome for the legs keeps them sticking straight out
Always love your vids. Very informative. Heard a shout out for you on trapping today about tanning gods and your instructional vids. 👍🏼 been a sub for years

Would this be the cut procedure for a taxidermy mount?
Is there anything different in doing a bobcats feet? Do the claws stay extended out on a cat?
How long do you dry him fur in before turning fur out
Just wanted to thank you for all the great videos you put together I have a few questions. I've been hoping for a video like this!
Do you kill skunks the same way as all the other animals? And how do you remove the smell from skunks?
Great job brother

Milankovitch cycles are a bugger for sure.
I had to wash my fox does the fur need to be dry before I board it if I am tanning it like yours
Ok once you flesh and dry the pelts do you have to do anything else such as tanning or such for selling
Instead of borax could you set up a horizontal hanging system where the legs will hang down so no skin on skin? I feel that could help as well
That would def help. Just be sure to get the leg skins pushed back down before its too dried.
How long can a fox sit if I couldn’t get to it immediately?
that was a great video.
So I have a fox in the freezer right now and I just cannot seem to keep the tail on any animal that I have skinned or helped skin, so I was looking for some pointers on repairing a tail on a fox. It just ripped off about half way down
Do you handle the ears on coon the same way when you tan them?
How do we put those animals down without blowing a big hole in'em. Even a 22 makes a significant exit. Or is that exit hole acceptable to deal with later.?
Do u think fur prices will go ip
Great video! Very helpful. Can you do the same type of video's but with different animals? Keep up the great content.
Gah, I’ve learned so much from you dude.
Coons
Fox
Deer
Rabbit
The list will keep going! Thank you
Opossum, almost forgot
How do you freeze them for storing? Rolled up? Flat & Stacked?
Your are the best man
What part of illionis are u from
Fantastic! Hands down - the guy's a pro. I'm dying to get up into the hills north of my home territory and get some traps out. I have mostly Bridgers, 1.5's. What do you recommend, or use, for canines CCO?
Do you sell wall hangers retail
My boyfriend and I found a little baby fox who was hit by a car, had a snapped neck. Other than that, the body is in really great condition, although neither of us have EVER done this before
Can you use salt instead of borax?
Splitting ears is at 31.20
do you split the ears of a raccoon that you are getting tanned?
What kind of knives do you have? How much did you want to spend on them?
Is a more expensive knife necessarily a better knife?
Good video. Thanks
Coon creek Outdoors Love your videos do you have Badgers in your area
How do you keep your knife from cutting to deep? I always struggle With cutting down into the muscle. I try to lift the knife but then I’m unable to make a single cut. I always end up cutting about an inch and the blade pops out.
Thanks for the videos dogg
Awsome video can you show us how to skin and flesh a coon for taxidermy purposes
Is the fox alive
great video. I'm hoping to try to skin few coyotes out with feet in this year. I will definitely be referencing this video. thank you for sharing
Good video. Doing feet and ears on a fox makes me think I'd like to display one of everything I trap. Thanks
Dont see knife in description would like one of those pelt knifes
Grundens, someone has been on a boat once or twice.
caught my first fox today. Can you make a tanning video specifically for fox? Or should it be done as you did the coons in the tanning video?
