This is the video I’ve needed for years! I’ve never been able to use a fleshing knife as well as I thought they should work, I thought they were supposed to be kind of a 70* edge and not super crisp.
My dad was a butcher and I have heard about knife sharpening my entire life. Then I worked in tool & die, where we needed sharp cutters, to cut steel. Stu is spot on with all of this info
I do not trap at all. But I do enjoy watching your videos. They are very interesting to me and I'm learning new things which is what I believe all people should do.
Thanks for the info and your opinions. I watch and learn .. You have made my fur handling so much better and the learning curve so much faster.. I rewatch your fur handling videos before I put up certain critters, it saves me a lot of fur and produces a better product. Keep'em coming Amigo
Excellent video. As a former knife sharpener, mounting the whetstone to a block or workbench is the best tip. Your control is much better than moving a stone across a blade that is laying on your bench or knee! Also note you will get a better edge with some oil on a natural whetstone. If you use a ceramic stone, add a little water to suspend the metal particles. Finally, stropping the finished blade on an old leather belt - or even a piece of clean cardboard - will hone the edge like a mirror.
I get people that ask me all the time about trapping and fur handling. I tell them all to go to coon creek outdoors on TH-cam. What you do for the trapping world is awesome. Keep it up.
Great video Stu! Doing up beaver today and was struggling with my Necker 600 so will go and sharpen it. it is 8 yrs old and will be the first time. It only sees 25-30 beaver a year and the odd badger so has done well.
I learned to handle Fur watching ur vids years ago I get better and better each year, that first year was brutal let me tell ya lol. Once or twice a year should be it. I have 2 freshers a 50.00 dolla wiebe and got the the Steinmyer 2 years ago love em both man the Steinmeyer is a Beast love it. HAPPY TRAILS.
I’ve been using a wiebe elite for 6 years now, only touch it up at the end of the season. I believe you nailed by emphasizing that cleaning it regularly is key. Great job!!!!
Hey man would you mind helping me with some questions I have I'm not a trapper but I hunt and I wan to start fur handling to put to use the hides instead of not keeping them
Nice wood Stu 😂 hahaha! Great video buddy. I use a buffing wheel on my Post knife to clean it and a Scotch Brite wheel to touch it up. It's about 5 years old and never needed to be sharpened.
It sounds like a lot of people have an issue with build up on the back of the knife and the knife no longer sits flat on the hide. It could also be caused by the chisel bevel moving towards the center of the knife too. Also I flesh with a wire wheel in either a high speed drill or angle grinder. You do have to be very gentle and outside. Cause it likes to throw meat and fat everywhere. So wear an apron for sure.
good video.. have a great new years Stu..the post knife is 440c stainless.. kind of a mid grade steel if they made it with 303 it would be bullet proof..jmo
Great video! very informative to me ( as a beginner trapper). Could you do a video on making a pvc fleshing beam, like what size, and where to get the size of pvc. thanks
I have never trapped or skinned and fleshed anything but I am going to give it a try this winter. We have coyotes on my own property and I may try to snare one. I have some traps and snares but I may need to forge me a fleshing knife. :) Any excuse to do some forging works for me.
my question is about the dull side. I just got a new FB pro fleshing knife, but it seems the same sharpness on both sides. how should the dull side look???
Hello. I'm not a trapper, but I'm a hunter. And usually I never keep the hide, but I've always felt bad for getting rid of it instead of keeping it and tanning it to use it. I was curious about what size fleshing board I need for fleshing deer, bear elk, pretty much any big game. Also what fleshing knife should I look for. Also if I do the drying process instead of using salt, do I still have to do a salt bath before applying the tanning solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
He just made a video on this a couple weeks ago going over the whole set up. Its pretty solid im building one right now going with 10 feet for deer and hogs as well
Hard to get a technique and experience when you get 1 or 2 animals a year.hopefully some changes and gear coming soon to help with those rookie numbers.
Why do some blades come with zero edge? I got a kit and the blade has no edge at all; you have to put your own edge on it. What the hell is the point of that?
Just read two articles on 1. the mink market - coats, accessories, and it's future and 2. the controversy surrounding fur - both pro and con. Personally I feel it's a shame folks are so deluded by organizations like PETA and that they've gained a significant foothold, no pun intended, on the political messaging. Not to ask you to step into controversy, maybe you'd rather not, but how about a video highlighting the beauty, versatility, and environmental friendliness of managing the renewable resource that is fur compared to the detrimental aspects of plastics and polyesters and other petroleum based products? Just opinion but if folks don't push back against agenda driven PETA and the like fur will be banned from good old New York to California. It's not right! I'm also curious how you find a market for your harvest - buyers. I know you've mentioned one or two houses that still buy fur but I can't recall the names.
My guess is it's PETA people who are giving the thumbs downs. Your vids are pretty informative and I couldn't imagine why anyone would give them thumbs down other than they are blindly against fur.
I love post knives. My fleshing knife and my hunting knife were both made by Ron Post. All his knives are hand made by Ron himself i know i grew up in South River Ontario where he lives and know him personally. Ron also runs a big trapline in the winter so he knows what makes a good knife for fur. Check him out www.postknives.com
Why low views numbers? Do you really think that your 67K subs are all trappers? There are many general public viewers who during trapping season watch you place your traps and collect your critters. I do. Sharpening knife is only interesting for trappers maybe.
This man has a high I.Q. Excellent teacher as a result.
I am a Fan... I have learned more from you in a few videos than anything else. Thank You for keeping the tradition alive!

Buy the Post fleshing knife. No need to worry about sharpening more than once a decade.
Good vid!
My Necker arrived from a supplier dull. Is that normal?
@@charlesmurray1220 No idea. I dont have a necker. I do recall reading something about that once upon a time though.
Thank you for a better quality updated version
Good video. Thanks for the the knowledge.

Great video, my post is due and I wasn't sure how to go about it!

same question
Hahaha!!! Great video. I have tried explaining that to some thick headed people.
I’ve watched the other video you’ve made so many times
Nice info.
Great video! Been needing to touch mine up but didn't want to make it worse! 👍 👍
Please You need to do a video on your past yearly total catch and how much you made
Can you use a draw knife? The ones you use to peal bark off posts and such?
Thanks for the videos man.
Good information CC
Thanks for the video STU.

Great video Stu. What type of steel is in the Post; Necker; Lee Steinmeyer? Ballpark prices and which is best for a beginner?
Good tips
Is the necker 600 knife, good for deer, bears and things like that?

I have a fleshing knife with 2 sharp edges on it can I still push fat off or do I need to grind down one side to do that
same question here
Nice wood Stu 😂
can you tell me how tall is your skinning machine.
He just made a video on this a couple weeks ago going over the whole set up. Its pretty solid im building one right now going with 10 feet for deer and hogs as well

Call him Big Wood Stu haha

Fleshing knives are like any other knife, quality steel to make a quality blade
What happened to the flags?
Do you flip the knife over too sharpen or leave it like your fleshing?
Hey Stu. Can't see where anyone is going "LIVE" for New Years. Just sayin"
😁👍
I sharpen fleshing knives for a couple guys on my belt grinder with a flat platton, don’t recommend it if you aren’t comfortable on a belt grinder
Nice 6x6 lmao
I want 1 knife

Think I'll eMail my senators and congresswoman on the subject this eve.

Bottom line. Be it a pocket knife or an axe blade , A dull knife is a dangerous knife.
I'd be careful with that knife around your 6×6.
