Always like your analysis of current events. I really believe the Liturgy needs to be celebrated in the way that has been proven over centuries. Let's stop the endless innovations, return to the treasure of Tradition.

You and a lot of others! I had occasion to speak with an elderly priest several years ago who conveyed that Vatican-II was well-intended, but poorly communicated to the clergy and therefore to the laity as well.

RJ, Does VII confuse you, or are you confused by what people say about it? The documents are probably available; maybe you should read them.
I was 15 when Vatican II ended. As Ralph Martin points out, it ended just as a societal and cultural revolution was taking place. A lot of the bad things that happened in the Church happened because of that. I'm not a historical authority, but I think you'll find similar disintegration happening in Protestant churches as well. Maybe both phenomena happened because of things outside of these churches over which they had little or no control.
There is a well-known logical fallacy: "Post hoc, ergo propter hoc." You may know what this means: "After a thing, therefore because of that thing." I think a lot of VII critics fall into the trap of that kind of thinking. I think VII was a wonderful and blessed event in the life of the Church, but I think it was used, either disingenuously or sincerely - I do not know which - to advance agendas within the Church that had/have little connection with the Council.
At any rate, I wish for you both wisdom and clarity as you discern a possible conversion into the Catholic Church. Hopefully, one day, we will happily welcome you into the family.
May God's most abundant and richest blessings be with you as you walk your journey of faith!

It confuses the living mess out of a lot of people. Also, I’m going to borrow that phrase to describe things in general haha!
But, I will reassure you that coming into the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church will be absolutely the best thing you’ve ever done! Jesus Christ founded His Church for you to be a part of it!

Brilliantly articulated. You have clearly identified why, how and when the correct pastoral message of Vatican II was eroded. As someone who lived through the crazy times of the 60's, it was Mother Angelica and shows such as yours with Peter on EWTN that clarified the message of Vatican II for me here in Australia. Sadly most people here in Australia did not even know of EWTN and so never heard of the Call to Holiness. Today there is no excuse as one can access the Good News on their phone. Praise God for raising up men such as yourself in the USA. I continue to be fed by you all and thank you and God for you. Many blessings. Fiat!

I am refreshed continually in recent years that I am growing old with brothers and sisters who are finding their way home to Christ in Holy Mother Church not because of new revelations, but because of persistent growth in longing for interior grace to battle modernism. I am growing old with you Dr. Martin ---- in Jesus Christ, Our Master, Our Lord. Never too late for growth in The Bride of Christ. I was young in the 1950s. I am still young 70 years later ---- young in God.

Thank you, Ralph, for this wise effort to recognize the legitimacy of Vatican II teachings while acknowledging the limitations, with even some perversions, of its pastoral teaching and implementation. We need such recognition more than ever as divergent, harshly critical voices within and outside the Church are being highlighted in our dominant media outlets. As one who also lived through the Council changes and its effects, along with the separable societal turmoil, I too was swept along by the anti-authoritarian egalitarianism and scientism that mitigated divine Truth for the sake of universal self-validation and empirical skepticism. In so doing, the meaning of the Cross was lost for many, and the divine revelation of Jesus was relativized within a myriad of personal and societal moral presumptions. I too now acknowledge how this has generated great confusion and disharmony, not to mention the risk to salvation for so many. It is time to unite and reorient in the direction of harmony you state and imply here. Thanks for your solid defence of our Faith.

Amen! Thank you, Ralph for your insightful and thorough analysis of the pastoral weaknesses implemented after Vat. II. I lived through the confusion and rebellion of the late 60's and early 70's as a college student. I believed the idea that all religions were good and "all we need is love"! Well, 50 years later we can clearly see where that takes us! Thank God I was given the grace of coming back home into the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church! As we prepare for Pentecost, I marvel at the power of the Holy Spirit and look forward to the outpouring of the Flame of Love throughout the entire world and the new era of peace promised by Our Lady of Fatima. There is cause for hope. Blessings and peace to you and all at Renewal Ministries.

Thank you for this. It has been on my heart a lot. I spoke with my spiritual advisor about it last month. He explained that the answer is somewhere in the middle. He said that the middle path, neither extremes, is the path of love and that is the only path. Since, I have made my peace with it but it’s hard to watch my brothers and sisters fight over this. I see dark and light in both sides.

Thank you for honestly addressing these issues. Confusion, and heresy has fertile ground in silence. It is certainly true that the “spirit of Vatican II” is often cited in support of radical changes that cannot be reconciled with the actual teachings of the Council, it is also true that the proponents of change can cite specific passages from Council documents in support of their plans without correction.

God bless you for this video. Vatican II has been so misunderstood, mainly because we in the pews have no clue what it was all about. I just thought it was about Mass being said in English and nuns changing their clothes (I was 12 in 1965). Now that I’ve read some of the documents, and plan on reading the rest of them, it seems the Western Church threw the baby out with the bath water back then. Now, I’m seeing many people seeking, and finding, that Baby, and bringing Him back where He belongs - in the very center of His Church, and in our hearts. God bless you! ❤️🙏🏻🕊

Prof Martin, my second comment. Your lectures are so heavy, I have to watch them in stages and think about what you say. After finishing the lecture what resonates with me is how the weakness in the pastoral message of VCII, in very real contradistinction to the overall theme (call to personal holiness, evangelization etc), has contributed to the very confused state the Church is in now.
There is no unified emphasis on personal holiness and the dangers of sin in homoletics. The preaching is tangential, and certainly very off point by many of the prelates of the Church. The problem, in my opinion, is incomplete formation of priests during the 15-10 years following VCII who are now leaders in the Church (if they're still in the Church). This is one of your best- thanks again.

  • @Hiwatt100W1
    @Hiwatt100W1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Very powerful, Prof Martin, thank you. Vatican II was never an endeavor I personally thought much of. To me, it ushered in a lot of confusion and division. From what we see, this continues full bore to this day within the Church. Your insight hasn't convinced me to the contrary, but maybe it will make us look at things more deeply.
For those who want the Cliff Note versions, per Prof Martin- What Vatican Council II really tried to reset- 1. Overarching objective for the Catholic Christian is holiness, 2. The importance of the Church as a Community of Love (agape), 3. Almost as a result of the first two, is the Church's often overlooked mission of evangelization.

Absolutely brilliant and enlightening - it's long past time that the catholic church resurrected Jesus' call to repentance. Here in Ireland they, in general, preach the God of ' nice'. Priests will not even remind those who present for Holy Communion that they should be in a state of grace to receive. No homilies on the 6th commandment 'lest they offend' particular groups or individuals. Contrived Diocesan synods in which those of no faith, those who don't practice their faith, those who lack knowledge of Catholic Teaching, and those who reject Catholic Teaching, are unwittingly guided by church authorities, to seduce the synods into coming to pre-ordained conclusions.

So how can this be shared????
Who will actually read the documents? Back then few did and now people do not read all that!

Fully admitting that I have a very limited understanding of Vatican II, I think the moment you say that one of the serious concerns of it is that it fosters a troubling naivety about the modern culture is probably the most pertinent thought. My suspicion is that there were a great deal of fairly wise priests and nuns who saw that such changes would lead exactly to what we are seeing. The results of the cultural proliferation into the unfortunate cracks of the implementation of Vatican II is something that is the same process seen throughout the greater culture. Not to claim knowing better but simply as a matter of thought, were there concerns of the Church based on past indiscretions or missteps perhaps which could have been addressed more directly without perhaps some of the other tendrils into greater culture, perhaps it could have been more successful. Granted, the results are largely related to the greater culture itself, I myself returned to the church largely hoping for a much more I suppose old fashioned understanding of the faith, perhaps more so than the other faiths usually present. The way that my old Italian grandmother describes the Church for example is something appealing to me. And unfortunately, especially in my area which has been absolutely washed in the culture as it is today, many if not most of my local churches are frankly nothing more than costumed varieties of modernity and I find that unfortunate. Frankly, the most appealing Catholic church I've seen around be happens to be one who does not recognize Vatican II. I was excited for Pope Benedict, hoping that he could iron some of these things out and revitalize the traditions perhaps which do appeal to a lot of people which are unfortunately lost to modernity but he was sadly very short lived as pope.
I'm still very much learning and relearning a great deal of faith matters, but this is something which I have thought a lot about and I'm happy to have found a thoughtful discussion of the matter

Excellent evaluation of Vatican 2. I believe it is used many times as a scapegoat for the bad things that happened in the church. But, Vatican 2 was inspired to happen by the Holy Spirit. And, as Ralph Martin explained, the few ambiguities that the council rendered have been tighten up.

I think we might be missing the point that we think we have control. Satan is working hard. We have to come together and pray more for each other and the world. Our pride is getting in the way. This is more than what our pride thinks we can control.

In the current mess we are facing in the Church, there are people like me hoping the de facto schism comes to light. Too many people who call themselves Catholic, do not agree nor abide by the norms we have been following for two thousand years. Considering the priests, bishops, and cardinals who are encouraging and blessing deviant behavior, the situation is very depressing and nearly hopeless. I used to find stimulating Bible studies, adoration chapels, prayer groups in my Parish. It's no longer so. Adoration chapels are being shut down, priests are preaching nonsense and faithful are meditating on heretical topics. I live in California, Sacramento area, and would like to know if you have a suggestion for me about what I can do to nourish my Faith and where I can find a community with a sound spiritual Catholic foundation. Any idea, Dr. Martin?

Please READ 👉👉👉👉 I was watching a video recently and it had Priest from the traditional Latin mass. This priest he said that in the Novus ordo Mass The Priests cannot do the consecration at mass because they have not been correctly ordained as the church prescribes. Is this true and if so I have never gone to mass with a true Eucharist have I? I’d really like to know if you could do a show on this entire topic because it has me very concerned and it probably has many other people in the newer mass concerned. Thanks 🙏

Dear Mike, thank you so much for your question and your pursuit of the truth. I’m sorry that you’ve been confronted with anxiety over something so important, the source and summit of our faith - the Eucharist! While the reasons are too many to fully share here, what this priest has articulated is false. Priests who preside over the Novus Ordo Mass are validly ordained and have proper faculties to confect the Eucharist. You can be at peace and KNOW that your years of participation in the Mass have not been in vain and you have indeed been in the presence of, and received, the True Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

Ralph. I’m sure you’re not absorbed by the number “likes”. You did an excellent overview and an enlightened commentary on a well intentioned but failing pastoral strategy. Come Holy Spirit. Your Church, carrying your Wisdom, is so weak.

Catholics are allowed to eat pork. It's based on Holy Scripturet
      Acts 10
      11
c He saw heaven opened and something resembling a large sheet coming down, lowered to the ground by its four corners.
      12
In it were all the earth’s four-legged animals and reptiles and the birds of the sky.
      13
A voice said to him, “Get up, Peter. Slaughter and eat.”
      14
But Peter said, “Certainly not, sir. For never have I eaten anything profane and unclean.”d
      15
The voice spoke to him again, a second time, “What God has made clean, you are not to call profane.”e
      16
This happened three times, and then the object was taken up into the sky.
