I remember the first time I saw Breakfast Club and Ally Sheedy - after being asked by Emilio Estavez what her parents do to her - says, "They ignore me," I had to stop the movie until I could pull myself together. I was abused. The physical abuse wasn't too bad, but the emotional abuse thoroughly messed me up for years. It wasn't until my forties that I finally was able to fully move on from the damage. The worst thing about abuse is that, as a child, you literally have nothing to depend on except your parents, the ones responsible for you, the ones who are supposed to love you and protect you. My father sexually abused my sisters and at least one of my brothers that I know of, he was physically abusive (to a much larger extent to my older siblings than to me and my younger brother), and he was emotionally abusive to a degree that took me literally decades to recover from. My mother didn't help things; she was always quick to shower us with hugs and kisses, but in the end, she enabled his abuse. She constantly made excuses for him, said he was abused as a child himself (so why the hell would he continue the cycle with his own children?). But in the end, it all boils down to the same thing. We were children. We depended on our parents. We believed in them because we had to; there was literally no other option. So whether it was emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, or as you claim, being "neglected to a degree" because of bullshit, it all hurts, it all leaves scars, it all damages children who have no way to protect themselves when they don't feel safe or seen.

David Fincher (the director) really knows how to capture and move within the frame and the cinematography is divine. As a filmmaker, I appreciate this on so many levels. Great reaction!!! This song is highly underrated in my opinion. I think you both picked up on so many of the details that a lot of people miss. So many of Madonna's songs have double or even multiple meanings. I'm not a very religious person, but for some reason I find the undertones of her faith (Catholic ) and spirituality laced throughout so much of her music comforting. Madonna was very much affected by the death of her mother at such an early age, and with 8 children to raise after losing his wife, I'm sure it wasn't easy for any of them. 👑💙

When I came out in 1990 to my father, he didn’t accept it very well and we didn’t speak for a couple of years after he threw me out of the house. Fast forward 30 years and he finally told me why he reacted in such a terrible way to me, and that I’d found out he was sexually abused as a teenager. We finally made peace with one another and he told me how proud he was of my life with my husband. Then he passed away in 2020 and I played this, that’s when the final verse hit me hard, as many people don’t really mean to be cruel. Somebody hurt them too.❤

Madonna has said later in her career that the anger she felt for her dad for many years was that after their mother died, that they rarely as a family was ever able to speak about what happened. Shortly after their mother died her father remarried and he didn't want to talk about what happened, and the kids didn't ever feel like they got to grieve. It changed Madonna, and because of that she became who she is today; because of the heartache of her mothers death.

Her mother died when Madonna was 5 and after that her relationship with her father was not the best. They would fight a lot. Madonna had a very sad childhood and she grew up blaming herself for her mother's death, she thought she died because she was an evil little girl. As she grew up Madonna became more and more rebellious against his father's religious values and against the church. In this song she takes her father and the Church and blends them into a male authority figure, the "father" or "Father". And she also mixes there a bit of her ex husband who became violent to her. So yes, the relationship with her father, with the church and with her husband are all connected as a pattern. First of all, love the Madonna reactions! Keep em coming ladies. This is one of Madonna's greatest ballads. She is such a storyteller. This video is one the best music videos of all time and definitely in Madonna's top 5. David Fincher (the director) really knows how to capture and move within the frame and the cinematography is divine. As a filmmaker, I appreciate this on so many levels. Madonna's mother died when she was 5 and was probably the most singular impactful event in her life until at least her daughter was born.

This song actually peaked at #20 in the US and ended her consecutive streak of back to back top 10 singles starting in 1984. Maybe it was too sophisticated for Pop Radio. Nonetheless a timeless song and video.

Great reaction!!! This song is highly underrated in my opinion. I think you both picked up on so many of the details that a lot of people miss. So many of Madonna's songs have double or even multiple meanings. I'm not a very religious person, but for some reason I find the undertones of her faith (Catholic ) and spirituality laced throughout so much of her music comforting. Madonna was very much affected by the death of her mother at such an early age, and with 8 children to raise after losing his wife, I'm sure it wasn't easy for any of them. 👑💙

The premature death of her beloved mom at age 30 when Madonna was just age 5 haunted her specially her seeing her mom’s lips stitched up during her mortuary viewing was an image that indelibly imprinted in her memory. It could also symbolized her struggles with censorship throughout her career. The close-up cover photo of her 2019 Madam X album of her deathly ashen hue face and her lips sewed up with the letters MADAMEX speaks to this.
This song resonated with people who have similar traumatic experience. In 2004 she wrote a sort of sequel to this song-Mother and Father-which is as introspective. Really appreciate your insightful reaction to this song and for covering Madonna’s music and artistry.

When I came out in 1990 to my father, he didn’t accept it very well and we didn’t speak for a couple of years after he threw me out of the house. Fast forward 30 years and he finally told me why he reacted in such a terrible way to me, and that I’d found out he was sexually abused as a teenager. We finally made peace with one another and he told me how proud he was of my life with my husband. Then he passed away in 2020 and I played this, that’s when the final verse hit me hard, as many people don’t really mean to be cruel. Somebody hurt them too.❤

Madonna has said later in her career that the anger she felt for her dad for many years was that after their mother died, that they rarely as a family was ever able to speak about what happened. Shortly after their mother died her father remarried and he didn't want to talk about what happened, and the kids didn't ever feel like they got to grieve. It changed Madonna, and because of that she became who she is today; because of the heartache of her mothers death.

That, along with the strict regime from her Catholic School Nuns gave Madonna the perseverance and discipline to forge her monumental career. No artist has been able to take their life and incorporate it so brilliantly into her art and music. So many people think Madonna is her stage name; couldn't be further from the truth. Madonna Louise Veronnica Ciccone is the woman behind tbe Pop phenomenon "Madonna" - the greatest pop artist ever.

So yes, madonnas mother died when she was 5 years old. This song is in regards of Madonna’s father marrying the housekeeper. Madonna had some resentment towards that. This video and song was the representation of that experience. No, madonna was not abused by her father, she actually loves her father, but as a middle child she was outcasted and rebellious.

She’s describing her relationship w her father, who wasn’t necessarily abusive, but wasn’t emotionally available or talked ab her mother’s death and how he went autopilot and married the housekeeper to keep some kind of nuclear family. I think the scene where she’s in bed and the guy wakes up and slaps her represents her and Sean Penn in a symbolic way. She’s talked ab how she thought getting married would complete her, but when she and Sean didn’t work out it was a shocking/blow to her. Tabloids said Sean hit her, but I think if that was actually true she’d straight up be talking ab it now bc of where she is in her career. The way she sings “I never felt so good about myself,” I die.

This song is not completely autobiographical. Madonna did lost her mother when she was 5 years old but she wasn't abused like situation she portrayed in this video. After her mother died, her dad married again and had two more children. Before her mother passed away they were 6 brothers and sisters including Madonna. So, because her dad remarried, she felt betrayed, but she stayed focused on finish her high school and move on and persuit a dancing career, but everything ended in a successful as a singer. In real life Madonna always been her dad favorite's child. In this video she also, portrayed a abusive husband (Sean Penn), and that really happened in real life.

Madonna's father was a ver strict man, and he was very religious and forced his children to be religious. He was so religious that he was called "the preacher" in the neighborhood. Her mother died when Madonna was 5 and after that her relationship with her father was not the best. They would fight a lot. Madonna had a very sad childhood and she grew up blaming herself for her mother's death, she thought she died because she was an evil little girl. As she grew up Madonna became more and more rebellious against his father's religious values and against the church. In this song she takes her father and the Church and blends them into a male authority figure, the "father" or "Father". And she also mixes there a bit of her ex husband who became violent to her. So yes, the relationship with her father, with the church and with her husband are all connected as a pattern. It would be interesting that you react to her song "Papa Don't Preach" which also deals with the male authority figures in her life, her father and the church represented by the Pope, in this Pope/Papa/Father figure.

In her best videos, she's is always pointing out hypocrisy and sometimes even her own. She is outstanding. Keep 'em coming.

This is not autobiographical as far as the imagery goes. Madonna's Mother died when she was 5 yrs old. And she has spoken very openly about how it has affected her life in so many ways. In fact she is such an amazing Mother other 6 children. She's very much into the arts. The 4 children she adopted from Malawi would never see 1/1000th of what she brought to her life. Her Father was not abusive at all. He's in his 90's and she's talked about the hard times growing up and what he meant to her because he ended remarrying. So I think a lot of her life experience molded her into what she became. She works her ass off. She's also a perfectionist, which people can't deal with, so she gets the raw end of the stick from her 2 brothers and the media. But there would be no Lady Gaga, Britney without the lead roll she took in showing woman can do anything. ❤
