Sheila E was a very popular drummer (jazz and R&B) before working with and for Prince. She even toured with him and they were briefly engaged. Prince produced her 1st 2 albums and like with most of his proteges, he also wrote songs and played multiple instruments. This song flew up the charts so fast that Sheila asked her siblings and cousins to be in the hastily filmed music video. It was the first time many of us had ever seen a female drummer/singer. She's still working in the music industry.

Shiela was surrounded by some of the greatest Latin musicians of the 20th century. Her father was the great American Precutionist "Pete Escobedo" and Shiela had played the congas in his Latin-Funk band "Azteca" when she was quite young. Her Godfather was the incomparable "King of the Tambalas, Tito Puente, and a good family friend to her father was " Celia Cruz " or The Queen of Salsa. Her talents as a Precutionist and overall musician caught Prince's attention and the rest is funkadelic history. Not to mention her beauty, sex appeal and stage presence. Awesome reaction to a huge hit by one of the most talented woman percussionists (known as the “Queen of Percussion” and I saw her in that role in the George Duke Band, a few years before this came out. And as many have already said, she came by it honestly, as he father, Pete Escovedo, was a master percussionist and eventually hired by Carlos Santana for the Santana band), even before anyone had ever heard her sing.
In case, you get to read this comment, that saxophone that went straight out like a clarinet, is a soprano sax. One of the greatest masters of that instrument as well as the tenor sax, was my favorite musician and composer, Wayne Shorter, who played with Joni Mitchell, plays the solo on Steely Dan’s song “Aja”, and was co-founder of my favorite band of all time, instrumental jazz-rock fusion band, Weather Report (to whom someday, I hope you’ll react. Maybe start with their biggest hit, “Birdland”. There’s also a vocal version with lyrics by jazz harmony group, The Manhattan Transfer, who I also think you’ll love, as they combine rich harmonies with jazz and crooning).
I loved Wayne and got to see him many times with Weather Report back in the 70’s and with his own quartet a bunch of times in the 2000’s.
He just died last year at 89. I got to talk with him at one of his gigs I went to see here in San Fran about 9 years ago. I went out to see him 5 times in one week as a celebration of my birthday that year.
I hope you get to see this and react to some Weather Report music. You will love them. It’s like if Pink Floyd, and Miles Davis, and maybe Earth, Wind and Fire had a baby that played mostly instrumentals. Lots of keyboards and synths.

I was lucky to have been able to see her play with Prince on a few different tours. Amazing! But then I saw her play in a small club in San Francisco (Yoshi's near Geary & Fillmore, not in Oakland) and she was with her dad and brother(s). Small club, maybe less than 200 people. They were absolutely mind-blowing!!! Prince had a habit of surrounding himself with brilliant musicians. The musicians that have played with Prince is like a list of all-stars.

This song was actually written for Vanity(Denise Matthews ) a Prince muse, protege and love interest. Denise and Prince had a huge disagreement over money (he wanted to lowball her for staring in Purple Rain, which Apollonia took over….and Denise wanted her romantic involvement with Prince to be exclusive.) She walked away from his ”camp”in the early Purple Rain era. In turn ,when Sheila joined
later on and Prince created an entire LP for her,he gave “Glamorous Life” to Sheila. You can hear Prince’s vocals and guitar in the background.

The man was so confident in being insanely great at what he does that he wrote songs or added to songs for other artists and it wouldn't be revealed till years later that he was involved... all songs became hits. Like this one, Manic Monday (The Bangles) , Nothing Compares 2 U (Sinead Occonor) , Jungle Love (Morris Day and the Time, Sex Shooter (Apollonia 6) and he even added synths to the 80s hit Stand Back for the queen of Rock Stevie Nicks.

When I was a flight attendant, I was lucky enough to have Sheila E in my first class section…at first I didn’t recognize her…she came on looking fabulous in a white pant suit and this huge white brim hat, and I thought to myself, that’s one stylish babe! When she and her (I can only assume her husband/boyfriend) sat in their seats, I introduced myself as their first class flight attendant and began to ask them by name (cause I had passenger manifest) if they’d like a pre-departure beverage or cocktail when I realized her name resembled that of one Sheila E! I did a double take, and my jaw to ground, I was gushing over her! She was the sweetest, and most kind celebrity I have ever had on my flights over the 8 years I flew. She even happily took pics with me! Absolutely adore this woman!

Sheila E is the most amazing drummer. She played with the extremely talented George Duke ( some people may know his song Sweet Baby ) but he toured for years making music and Shiela E was quite young. She also performed with Alphonso Johnson Prince came to see her because she was well known and very talented. Love Bizarre , Hold me and her vocals on Erotic city with Prince are still in my rotation today. My granddaughter plays the Saxophone , the violin and the guitar and she adores Shiela E .

Sheila E is drummer extraordinaire! She's also a member of the talented Escovedo family. (That's where the "E" comes from in her stage name.) In the late 1970s, she played with George Duke. If you haven't reacted to any of his music, he has a great discography of ballads, party music. If you want FUNK, please react to his song "Dukey Stick". Sheila plays on that song; you even hear her voice near the end of that song. ❤
