  • If wearing headphones turn volume down some of the calls for CQ I spoke to loud -
This video try's to show how I actually get on the air from power on to using "RCL/STO" and CH1-CH3 pre-recorded messages, adjusting power, and other settings. Also I show my antenna switches going from 10 to 6 meter. Also, shows the Multi function know and how you have to clear it with the MCH - remember when adjusting power, and other settings you have to use the "MCH" button to take away the direct control from the Multi function knob - enjoy this is just for fun to give an idea to new users how I use the radio.

You would have heard the Kilo Zero station much better if you had the IPO AMP 1 (Intercept Point Optimization 1) pre-amp turned on. I always use IPO Amp 1 on any band that fails to show anything displayed on the waterfall on my FT-991A. If IPO Amp 1 doesn't do that I try IPO Amp 2. You can also use the IPO and ATTN (attenuator) both at the same time according to the owner's manual to get a somewhat lower level of IPO and for interference rejection (see the owner's manual *Advice note at the bottom of page 47 or page 49 if using the PDF file version of the owner's manual). I do that a lot mainly with IPO Amp 2 if it causes too much noise. Thanks for posting this video and very 73 from Cliff, KU4GW.

I have a Ft991 a and the tuner does not act like yours, If I try to tune a new freq, It does not do the rapid clicking like yours. The Atas red light comes on and after about 2 mins. it starts transmitting for about 2 mins and then beeps like it is finished. It takes about 3-4 mins to tune?

I am blind so that multi function button sounds horribly confusing especially because you have to watch the screen! Does this radio have any embedded speech? Thanks

@@westtexasvideogateski5juf255 thank you! What I ended up purchasing was a KENWOOD 590 SG it seems to have the most omitted speech and that isn’t much! I wish really wasn’t all about screens these days the wind stayed at there isn’t much on the band to be easier to look it up on a scope but I don’t have that option so from the radio can’t be television!

I shouldn't have called it was a mistake, I made a lot of errors in some of my early videos getting better with time and practice, I've had to discipline my self to watch the water fall carefully and listen, listen and listen!! 73 and thanks for the message it will help other HAM's

Great use case video for the 991A! I’m new to HF and curious what would be a good HF antenna I should get to start HF with the 991A if I do not have a tower (and live on a 1-acre lot with a couple of 30’ trees near my shack in the house). For VHF/UHF I already run a Diamond X50 on a Kenwood mobile, but plan to purchase the 991a. Would a OCF Dipole 80-6 6-band antenna be adequate as the HF Antenna?

Good evening Ray, thanks for the message, I think so, most all the dipoles should work, make to to read about how you install them and height a so forth, the following is a company I'm looking at hamcall.net/7bandocf.html#4band I use a Sirio GPS 27 1/2 Wave 10M-HAM Base Station Antenna (10 Meter /11 Meter) tuned for 28.400, I'm looking at a Dipole next ready to get started with CW on 20 and 40 meter. @@westtexasvideogateski5juf255 thanks for the info, I have an update. I attended a 2-meter tech net chat last night with a local repeater club, several of the more knowledgeable Hams said the OCF HF antenna configuration is not a great setup due to potential RF reflecting back to the radio. They all recommended the newer European fad of an End-Fed Half-Wave (EFHW). RF reflection is a lot less of an issue and the performance is great.
I’ve started looking at these antennas and kits. The MFJ version has had mixed or poor reviews. Other brands (including the MFJ) I found available on the DX Engineering web page (I only checked there to read these antenna reviews). My local Ham club recommended doing an Internet search for “ARRL End-Fed antenna”, which shows building the antenna from a kit costing around $50.
I’m leaning toward buying a pre-made antenna to better my success. Hopefully I’ll build the next antenna after getting a taste of HF.

Thanks for the video. I also have the ft-991a and the new M-70 mic.
How many watts were you using on 6m SSB calling CQ? Is there a particular reason that you don't run the full 100w on 10m? I didn't see an amplifier in line requiring a low drive output is the reason for my question. Thanks and 73

Good Morning Greg, thanks for the message , I was running about 50 watts on 10 and 6, I usually don't run the full 100 watts, maybe I should, I guess I'm also thinking about duty cycle and heat wear an tear etc, but the main reason is a couple of months ago I had to send my radio to Yaesu (because something was burning inside) and it took about 2 months to get it back and they never told me what burned up. What I've started doing is if I get a contact with a poor RST report I will move it up to 100 watts then work the contact to bring them in and let them know my power is increased to 100 watts. I'm still learning let me know if you have any advice I'm open to other thoughts - Have a great week and '73 from KI5JUF hope to make a contact with you soon!!

      @@westtexasvideogateski5juf255 Good morning Steve.
Thank you for your reply. Sorry to hear of your previous issues with your ft-991a. I have one as well. The transceiver is designed to be able to transmit at full rated power with a decent SWR. I run mine at full rated power unless I am driving an amplifier. I have worked nearly all of my DX contacts with 100w and my homebrew fan dipole trimmed for 75, 40, & 20 meters. I use the Yaesu M-70 mic 🎤 . I actually was leaning towards the Icom 7300 but decided to get the FT-991A (shack in a box) and so far I am happy with my decision.
Yaesu now has a three year warranty on most transceivers so that is also a great selling point. My backup transceiver is an Icom IC-751A.
As long as your reflected power is in a good range, there should be no need to worry about duty cycle while running at full factory rated power. I bought mine to run mostly SSB at the rated 100w and if I felt it was unsafe to run that advertised output then I would ask myself why I didn't just buy a QRP transceiver and save money. If it can't run it then Yaesu should just get you a new replacement because there is something wrong with the one you have. After all, you paid for the advertised specs of that fine piece of equipment. 😊👍
I enjoy learning more about our hobby everyday. I like the information I receive from more experienced operators than myself and especially W8JI

I look forward to hearing you on the bands. Enjoy your day.
