Thanks for the video. I am looking at buying my first antenna. The DX Commander Signature 9 had my attention but I believe I would be better satisfied with this one since no ground radials required and it covers all bands from 6m to 80m. Kenny AI5VB

I noticed at 7.37 you were concerned about bumping the vfo dial and going off the frequency just press the lock . I see the bumping or moving the vfo in memory mode as a advantage? I have the older ft897 model but it works in a similar fashion. What i do is load up the memories with all the bands and modes and simply stay in memory mode ,and tune off the memory in MT (memory tune ). It's like a band stacking. eg: memory M1, 1.830 cw .M2, 1.840 ft8. M3 19.30lsb M4 1.957lsb M5 1.980 rtty or AM for tune up frequency. Then same on 80m start at M6, 3.560cw , M7 3.760lsb . And so on all the way up to 6metre band then start at 50.100cw in M50 , M51 50.300usb .M53, 52.125 FM same with 2metre and 70cm so you might end up with 90 memories. And all you have to do is scroll with the multi control and you can zoom up and down the entire spectrum from 160m to 70cm all your favourite spots and simply move the vfo if needed . That way you will seldom need the vfo ? Or at least that is a option ? N4HNH does the very same method as me , it's worth a go ? It is a bit laborious feeding in all the memories but once it's done it's dead easy to navigate up and down and always be in the right mode /frequency? It's not "7" meters, it is 7mhz or "40" meters! And the swr tells us nothing about efficiency, it only tells how well matched the antenna is to the transmitter. A dummy load has a good swr on all bands but is a very poor radiator!

This is "NOT" an end fed antenna, it is basically an off center fed antenna that uses the coax outer shied and the metal mounting pole as the other half of the antenna. Nice they specify mounting at 30' and that is so the counterpoise (metal pole) is at least 30' long. The antenna is very lossy, especially on the lower bands, and the matching transformer cause most of this loss and is why they put a heat sink on it. It wastes power in the form of heat! That, and it's short length, especially for the low bands is what causes the high loss. The 16db loss on 80 meters only allows about 10 microwatts of a 100 watt signal to be radiated. You can make contacts with it, but just think how many more contacts you cold make with a much more efficient antenna. Wire is cheap compared to this antenna and can be made into antennas that are much more efficient!

I have to believe that there must be a way to use a headset on the computer for the microphone. Otherwise, what value does the software have if you are tied to the radio to use its microphone?

I'm interested in cat control. I had my 991A set up for remote when I first got it . But moved and hardly use it . But would like to set up my rig with computer control software....thanks de N5OMV

What Programming Software are you using?

I have a solar con for my current base station and it supports a cobra 29. I am going to purchase a maco 5000 antenna and mount that on a 90 foot tower. I wont to mount my solar con on the same tower but below ther maco at about 70 feet. I plant to oly operate one at a time. In your opinion do you think the lower antenna will impac the maco.

Is that 10 or 35 feet at the tip or base of antenna?

Looking at getting base stations with some family. We want to have pretty reliable communication between 40-90 miles as the bird flies. Wondering if that is possible on 2M simplex or would we need to use repeaters? Would another band be better?

To the best of my knowledge, unless you're getting crosstalk that you want to squelch, you don't need set the downlink tone. So if a repeater uses a different tone for TX and RX you can set the radio CTCSS-Mode to "ENC" which allows you to specify an uplink tone and not require a downlink tone. I think this will work 99.999% of the time as the downlink town is only for eliminating noise for your benefit and the repeater does not require it.

I just got a 991A and, to my dismay, the waterfall did not work. Thank you !! you renewed my faith in Yaesu,, but I wonder what the wisdom was in having the default have to spectrum frozen. That is one of the main reasons I, and many other hams, get this radio! 73 and thanks for the very well done video!!\ 73

Got a factory 2nd for £70 uk. Any end fed wire will beat it by a mile, the 1to6 unun is so losey .You can add a 1to4 balun and turn it into a RYBAKOV, big improvement.Thanks for the review Rob G4WGR

Working on my General....studying transceivers (tending toward the Icon 7300) and studying antennas. I like vertical designs like this comet for vanity reasons (wife). Highest point in my yard has a barb wire fence along the property line. It is around 100 feet from there to the house and my base station, so good coax I know BUT how high off the ground do I need to install this 20+ foot antenna? Just above the highest part of the barb wire fence? Since the highest part of our property is on the property line I cannot guy it down (well I could but only in two directions/3rd would be on the neighbor. If just above the barb wire fence I could 'plant' a strong pole in concrete and then affix this Comet to it. Thanks for your thoughts. W6RYM.

I recent got an FT-991A - and the tuner.. well... Ok for "standrd" antennas, but I'm using a random wire with 9:1 Unun so I've had to get an external tuner.. the MAT-30 - we'll see how that goes.

JA3JHT was calling CQ on the frequency when you said "someone is on here let's see if I can get him" so you clearly heard someone but then called CQ. Not a great example for new operators. Listen Listen Listen

Steve, again thanks for this, after reading the manual a bit more I think I understand he Freq/Gain/Q selections better. I watched another of your videos and menu items 131 through 136 are different between the two videos. In fact, using the MONI setting the unprocessed sound is louder than the processed sound. No worries I will keep tweaking it. I am using a headset and find that I can't run my Mic Gain above 10 not my compression above 10 or I get a lot an ALC into the red and Compression above 10db. The good thing is that I do understand it better due to your videos.

Great information. Are there any publications that explain what the numbers mean. I have a headset and have found I get audio complaints if I wet my Mic Gain much above 20, so I am assuming the Mic is a tad hot on my headset.
