    I've been looking for this all around, and you are the only one that explained what I needed. Recently (yes july 2023) i finally bought a used hero 7 black found on a pawn shop. Is the most I could afford. So thank you for your time and very clear explanations. Just, if you could, please make a video with settings for a race. I may run an all terrain competition in a few months, and based on what happened last time with a 40 usd "action camera" (😢 it turned off repeatedly, and the start of the race just got a frozen image while the sound continued), I really wish to be able to record as much of that race...thank you for your time. And sorry for that much of a text.

Your video, btw, was the best overall for what I needed. I’m probably not going to edit videos, but your recommended Max ISO of 200 to 400 seemed very low.

      Good evening and happy new year to you as well! I do have a video showing how I edit time lapses but I do not yet have a video that shows how I edit GoPro video footage. I do use Adobe Premiere Pro for editing and additionally I know several individuals that use DaVinci Resolve and the GoPro App to edit GoPro footage. If you’re not making a lot of changes to your footage when editing you may find that the GoPro app is sufficient.
      I am in the process of creating a video that shows how I edit GoPro footage in Adobe Premiere Pro. I plan to have this published by the end of January.

On my homepage my "Franconia Ridge Loop in 4K" had Protune off and my "Giant Ledge" had it on and I really took time grading that video. Getting on the trail again soon so looking for the best settings again. Thanks for vid!

    Hi, a very clear and helpful. It's very much appreciated.
    If you set the Raw Audio option to Off, does it automatically grey-out the Mics option? I guess what I'm asking is, for those people who do not wish to record any audio at all, will setting the Raw Audio to Off accomplish that?
    Thanks.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a great question. Audio will still be recorded if RAW audio is off but it won’t record the extra audio track that would be recorded if RAW audio is turned on.
      The audio that is recorded with the clip can be muted or removed when editing/sharing the clip. I do this with a lot of clips or in cases where I want to add music or different audio.

    But I need two small suggestion...
    1. For low light interior short film making, Which one shall I choose among Gopro 8 and Gopro 9.
    2. Is it OK to take shots in auto stabilization.
    Ur suggestions will be really useful for me. 👍

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Hero 8 and Hero 9 should give similar results for indoor short film making.
      If you’re filming in low light you’ll want to have stabilization off unless the camera is stationary in which case it doesn’t matter. If the camera will be moving indoors then you’ll want a gimbal for best results. Hypersmooth doesn’t work great in low light or indoor light and tends to make the footage jittery when turned on in these filming situations.

    I've heard elsewhere that the rule of doubling frame rate to find the right shutter speed isn't as applicable for go pros, and have personally found that it doesn't make my footage look very good. Just a thought :)

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your feedback. It really depends on what type of look you’re going for. If you want that cinematic motion blur and have an ND filter on the GoPro it can work in specific filming situations. However, you are correct in that there are plenty of situations where it doesn’t look great. It really depends on lighting and what is happening in the scene.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question. Yes, these settings are optimized for good lighting and daylight. If you’re going to film in low lighting settings this is not a strength of the GoPro. You would want to bump the ISO to 400 or a max of 800 depending upon lighting. Anything beyond 800 and the footage will start to get really grainy.

    Hi, I was wondering if these settings are good for low-light rooms? I intend to film an indoor rock concert.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  ปีที่แล้ว

      For low-light rooms, it can be a bit tricky due to the sensor size on this camera being small. For those settings you'll typically want the ISO to be allowed to go a bit higher, but you'll also want to minimize any motion of the GoPro camera if Hypersmooth is on because this can create some jitter in the frame due to the low shutter speed which affects how well Hypersmooth will work due to Hypersmooth needing crisp, sharp frames. If you have a gimbal you can mount the GoPro on and turn Hypersmooth completely off that will most likely give better results uness your GoPro will be stationary on a tripod in which case this would not be an issue.

    • @GreatDayForAHike

      I recommend allowing your ISO Max to go to 800 and maybe 1600 (1600 can have quite a bit of digital noise so be aware of that). White balance you could do Auto or Native (Native if you want to color grade while editing). If you want to color grade you’d also want to choose Flat for your color mode.

      You’ll want to make sure you’re in good lighting for ISO 200. The GoPro excels in good lighting and these settings are based on that. If you’re in low lighting or a lot of shady areas you would want to bump up that ISO min setting to at least 400. I don’t recommend going over 800 though because footage will get really grainy over that level.

      For color correction it’s up to the creator to decide how they would like to do this. Some use LUTs, others color correct manually, and others like to leave the flat mostly flat with just some saturation added. I prefer manually color grading to get the most unique results.

    Hi , Good tutorial, cam came in yesteday :-) regarding the shutter speed you advice 120, on this camera there is no 120 option so I set it to the 196, any good or should I go for a lower setting ? Thanks in advance for your reply.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you’re not seeing 120 this could be because you don’t have your camera on the latest version of firmware. This could also mean your frame rate isn’t set to 60 or Protune may not be turned on. However, if you still don’t see 120 I’d recommend setting shutter to Auto vs the 196.

    You can use 60 and use a 24fps sequence, the audio won't be messed up

      You are correct. Dropping 60fps onto a 24fps sequence will work fine.

    • @GreatDayForAHike

      Audio will only mess up if you interpret the 60fps as 24fps or do slow motion.

    • @KidTonyGaming
      @KidTonyGaming ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GreatDayForAHike I understand if you intend to use slo motion on 60fps footage in a 24fps timeline/sequence without detaching/separating audio from video the audio will be slowed down along with the video, but for normal playback. As 60fps footage is just doubling the amount of pictures/frames taken in a second, meaning you could half the video (30fps/24fps timeline) and not have those problems.
      Now if you're recording at 60fps but having the camera process the final render/playback at 24fps is where you'll encounter those audio issues, I'm assuming that's what you mean my interpret

    A question.. with your experience, what minimum slow motion is possible with 30 fps in 4k ? a 80% 90% thanks

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a great question. If the original footage was filmed in 30fps then the most you can slow it down and still have it look good is by 20% and play it at 80% speed. In most cases I recommend interpreting the 30fps (29.97) footage as 24fps (23.976). This accomplishes the effect of reducing the speed by 20% to 80% speed and looks good.

      @GreatDayForAHike  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve owned a few of the 7 Black cameras for a few years and I have friends who also own them. We’ve had zero issues as long as we keep the firmware updated. We’ve put them through a lot, too.
      These cameras come with a one year warranty and the good news is if the camera does have an issue from the factory it’ll almost always show within the first year of ownership while it is under warranty.
      I expect those who have had a bad camera are more likely to talk about it, thus making it appear the issue is more widespread than it actually is considering GoPro made and sold millions of these.
