@philspencelayh5464 it was from the 1945 collection, they weren't made in 1945. Made in the 70s I think. GP did a limited run of the one with this dial - think it was around 50 pieces.
I absolutely love it. The bracelet and clasp have Forstner vibes, and they are very wearable and more popular now too. Even Nivada Grenchen option Forstner bracelets. I wish that the dial had Sea-Gull branding. Thanks for the review!
They both look nice. The ice blue sunray version is stunning as well. The Mido multifort looks better but obviously is much higher priced so… 100k subs come on 🥳🥳
I really like this watch. This bracelet looks really sharp. The case shape really is so 70's and it works and that dial is so unique and pops. Perhaps the dial should have the option of English but I would still buy this one with Chinese. Finally that movement. I have never seen a watch with that snapping instant day/date change. This watch is worth the asking price. A stunner for me.
I think it looks superb 🥰 The size is perfect for me, I prefer these smaller "vintage" watches. Maybe it is a little bit on the thick side and a bit pricey considering the pressed clasp, no sapphire crystal on the back case and no lume on the dial... but... it's not bad ! I like it 🙂
Mido released a similar dial as a limited edition of 99 version of the Multifort Tv Big Date last year called the S01 E01. The Mido is significantly better, but then you were paying $1400/£1150 for the privilege....which in my opinion was totally worth it, especially with ths in-house modified eta providing a 80hrs power reserve.
I have the blue one. I love it. I agree with everything you said about the conscious decisions they made about the materials and design. It's like wearing a vintage watch that was manufactured in 2024 (or 2023 in my case, as I bought mine last year). And, yes, they beat Mido to market with the "no signal" dial.
Love it - I also am a fan of the ST2100 movements, I have never had a problem with them, you can tell making movements is their main business. The only problem I now have is that my collection is much too large and full of watches I like - I dont know if this is enough to force a way in! Perhaps in a sale.
I own the blue version of the Mido Multifort Big Date and owned an Omega Seamaster 1020 TV. I would get this if they eliminate the Chinese writing on the dial. Other than that love the watch.
Very lovely, I surely hope they discount it in coming sales Ps. I own a Sea-gull from 1980 with a 36mm oystercase, jubilee bracelet and a decorated ST-5 movement. It is still in pristine condition. Real good quality.
I don't think of Seagull as an AliExpress brand. Yes they are on AliExpress but so what. Their watches can be extremely expensive, because of that they are not usually a brand I look at. Likewise this is not a watch for me.
I'm a fan of Sea-Gull . I'm looking for a Triple calendar Moonphas I'm considering buying a watch from them. If you buy one for review I'll buy it from you.
Test pattern is a fun novelty but such a massive missed opportunity to have had the test pattern done with coloured lume. That would have made is super cool and a reason to buy one. Also they should have an english version with the text or just done away with most of the text. Guess they did not plan selling it outside of china? And the stamped clasp is fine but what is not fine is the friction close vs having buttons to release it. Having some vintage seikos and remembering things as a kid seeing watches fall off people after they accidently caused the clasp to open up means I really hate friction close clasps.
The dial is a bit of a niche thing but once you accept that, they've done a good job. I dont have many milled clasps but they are the ones with the sharp corners, I'll happily have pressed where all transitions are gradual and comfortable. The movement isn't out of place either, a lot of people dont seem to realise that vintage watches (swiss ones at least ) were pretty good timekeepers.
I agree that a modern milled clasp wouldn't suit this watch. I love TV dial watches and wish more brands made them. I'm considering getting either the blue or silver variant.
The dial is a definite conversation piece, bracelet and case finishing, from what I can tell, looks really nice. However, to pay that price, you really would want this watch. For me, I would take the money that this watch costs, add a few more bills and purchase something with a Sellita movement.
Love this! Very cool having the 1970s style TV testcard graphic. I’ve never understood the modern obsession with milled- clasps - they don’t make or break a watch and imo things like case and dial finishing are far more important. A milled clasp wouldn’t work with this watch and when it comes to comfort pressed clasps are normally > than milled ones!
I'm sure I've seen a test pattern dial before so not sure I buy Seagull's claim that it's original. In saying that I do like it, except for............yep, that pressed clasp 😬
Gosh gary, i am with you all the way with Sea-Gull being a solid vendor to consider. You failed to mention one important Sea-Gull consumer benefit too: they have a very good reputation for after-sales service too (although you must send back to China . . .) My only problem with them -- and i still haven't bought one -- is what-i-find-to-be their rather garish styling. i guess i simply prefer the albeit "copyist" homage styling of the classics in both dress and casual watches more tasteful and appropriate on my wrist. But my daughter says that i am not "old" . . . but rather " old". -- gary ray
Got to admit I like the vintage styling the case and bracelet ,the movement looks great but I just don't get the dial its not for me I,m afraid. Some of the other seagull pieces look fantastic I could see myself wearing this watch but with a different dial
I have to say, if I, as a complete amateur, can set my hands on builds well enough for a date change bang on midnight in under 5 mins, there’s no excuse for factory machines or professional watch makers not to get the date change bang on as well 🤷♂️
What if you have to do I’d 60 times an hour….i suspect manufacturing watches on a grand scale a few minutes extra here and there adds up to millions of dollars over time, I agree with you but sadly that’s the world we live in.
I don't understand the appeal but I had never seen the Philips circle pattern before this watch came out anyway. Perhaps I'd feel different if it was the old Indian head test pattern. Is this a nostalgia thing?
First Of All - I Do Like It.... I Would Buy And Occasionally Wear It.... BUT - That Dial Is Busy And The Wrist Shot Shows How Hard It Is To Tell The Time On It Especially At A Glance....
The original Girard Perregaux had thick white hands so you could tell the time, and no day-date or indices to clutter the dial design. This is a dog's dinner.
I don't mind the pressed clasp or the push-pins. But how much sense does it make to have a clasp with eight micro-adjustments when the bracelet links are already very small? It only makes the clasp way too big for no reason. I also do mind the transition from case to bracelet. Looks like there's a gap, something very unpleasant to the eye. And let's better not talk about the price. It's just ridiculous. I'd always go for a vintage Seiko in that style for 100-200€.
I know Mido did a TV 'no signal' dial but I didn't know they were copying Sea-Gull. But who would believe a Swatch Group brand would copy a Chinese brand?
It's possible that this was done independently, maybe they came up with the same idea? I agree, unlikely that they are getting inspiration from Seagull but anything is possible.
Dial - nope, but like the hands/indices and case shape and the clasp. The taper on strap looks overdone. All for nought as its too small for me to consider
I like the design. However, I can see through the gap between the day and the date. I couldn't tell if they were still using painted blue screws, but that's something they should stop doing.
@@neli5p Muhammad Ali wore a Cartier tank all his life, so your premise of stereotypical manly men wearing watches based purely on a large case diameter is bunk. Personally, my sweet spot is 30-34mm. Doesn't feel like I'm wearing a dinner plate.
Beautiful, absolutely love it, Sea Gull been around since 1955, plenty of heritage there for those anti-Chinese, pro-Swiss watch maker diehards to put in their pipes and smoke!
If studio underdog released this and put an £800 price tag on it, people would buy it all day long. If I was the manufacturer I would find cool microbrands and sell them complete watches so they could double the price……hold on! Hmmmmm
Is there something about the Chinese that makes them inherently incapable of making good watches? Dont forget, Swiss brands have their steel work done in China, buy the Chinese! 😂
@ilikewatches no, some Chinese manufacturers make great watches. It's the cost of Chinese labor and Chinese customer service that makes the price a little unreasonable imo.
Love the look of the case and bracelet but while the dial does look very interesting the legibility looks to be bloody awful from your video. With my eyes these days i need watches i can easily tell the time from a quick glance. This would def not pass that test you had in videos recently, ha ha.
