Kickass - this is the beginning of a great setup for someone whose condition is variable. Instead of having someone push them on their bad days (or having to buy a power chair plus a manual chair), they can just swap in a little extra help in the form of a scooter. Its way cheaper than the motorized assist wheel that mounts directly to a chair frame - but lets face it, anything that isn't specifically made for wheelchair users will be about 1/5 the price of something that is.
Exactly what I was thinking, I have EDS (Ehlers Danlos Syndrome so nowhere near a fulltime wheelchair user but nearly every time I leave the house I use it to save my energy, walking costs more energy than wheeling), and I have good days and bad days with lots of ups and downs inbetween, this kind of thing would be awesome to use on the bad days when my shoulders just aren't up to pushing me around. The cost increase for adaptive gear is ridiculous, sometimes it's better to just modify something yourself, you can also make it custom that way which is never a bad thing when your chair is the thing people focus on first
So true as soon as you add on the purple tax (disability) the cost is ridiculous. Thankfully we are finding ways around it though... thank goodness we are so good at adapting or thinking out of the box 🤗🦿🦽🛴🤓
Sidewalks are the reason I have to use devices! I'm an ambulatory device user. I can walk short distances around house, but outside is another dynamic all together.
I’m so glad you’re back to making really fun stuff with a lot of personality and less of that like prim and propper interviewer vibe. I love this messy fun stuff!
Wow! this is amazing! I have been struggling for an affordable solution for my chair for some filmmaking I hope to do...and living in Japan... the options for attachments are painfully limited and because of that super expensive!! HOWEVER... there are billions of scooters. Now Im gunna lose sleep trying to figure out how to modify for my needs (especially not having a backup chair). That huge reach looks insanely uncomfortable and ..ya... can imagine more beefy tires a must of the high pressure ones i have. Thanks for this! Super stoked!
Who knew scooters would bring so much joy to both wheelchair users and amputees. I use a scooter as my alternative mobility aid, my scooter is a swiftyscooter which looks more like a bmx. It has made going out for long walks so much fun and less knackering. I love the idea of using an electric scooter attached to my wheelchair (for when I can’t wear my prosthetic). You can’t help but let out a lil woohoo when you’re on a scooter 🛴😆🦿🦽😍
You need rear wheel power, lower the handlebar etc. I’ve made an electric chair from an ebike. I’ve made a clamp that clamps around my footplate so it’s dead easy to put on and take off. Good luck with tinkering!
So inspirative!!!! What all we need actually: a simple hack guide, no soldering, welding, hard metal bending. I want to surprise my 87 old Mom with this....
I've been looking at scooters to try to do the same thing, 3weeks ago. But I'm on a fixed income, And did not want to be wasting money it it did not work. Thank you so much!
Love the ingenuity! I have a request though: please wear bright and visible colors if you are going to be on the street. Assume you are invisible and in danger from inattentive drivers. In the shade, having a black helmet and T shirt on, you about disappear. Thrills require some safety precautions! Keep up the good work!
This is such a cool idea! The only issue I think there would be, would be local laws. In the UK, electric scooters are pretty much illegal to use in public places because they're seen as a powered vehicle which must make them road legal and therefore owners would have to pay road tax (but electric bikes are legal).
If it remains with in the limits on being classed as a class 2 or 3 mobility scooter, like weight, width & speed then I’d say it’s a class 2. Also people with a disability don’t pay road fund tax.😊
I see electric scooters on the roads everywhere these days... Even riders without any kind of protection, which is worrying. So I think they're legal now. Dec 2023 👍🏻
Where your foot plate is pressing against the handle base of the scooter, it would be worth putting a soft mat piece down between them and then re-clamp on so the finish on the scooter stays nice but the metal will also not wear down from use and movement ;)
Nice one mate from the UK I already had a new rear drive scooter that I've never used due to a weak leg following neurosurgery. I also have an off road wheelchair. Part's arrived today only thing I'm waiting for is a rigid footplate which is arriving on Saturday. This is the best how to I've watched. Thanks from the UK I'll now be able to get outside and have fun with my son who's 9.
This is freakin genius i was just looking into finding my mother in law an interesting looking wheelchair attachment but its $1200 which is steep for my budget. But now im thinking of getting her a cheap fairly slow scooter (under 10kmph) and try this
I made a similar kind of rig but made a wooden jig on the scooter for attaching the chair. I'll maybe see if I can do a video on my channel. My scooter's too speed is 20km/he which is too fast really for my chair; I can limit the speed to 15 or 10km/hr. My scooter back brake works by stepping on it...useless...so I hang the back wheel on a cord sling. Braking is the electric brake on the front wheel plus my hand on a rim if I need it...The front column hinges down for storage; much easier/ less tiring to ' drive' in this position. The battery is good for maybe 8 km, so it extends my mobility distance to 4 km from base. I can detach the chair by undoing one wing-nut. Had to attach a bar to my footplates (this keeps breaking...so far tried wood, square alu tube, square steel tube) The steel tube has bent but not broken..I find it's really handy for nipping to the shops, going for my IVIG at the hospital in town... I get little help from authorities at present so have to rely on what I can come up with..( It takes 3 to 6 months to get my 'status' updated with my progressive neuromuscular condition). One last thing..It's fun, relatively fast & very dangerous going round sharp corners! Helmet recommended!
bro you are the bomb! I love it. gave me an idea, My handicaps are multiple but I'm learning to deal. After a accident in my 20s my back is jaked at my shoulders & my hips, I had learned to deal with that over the years. Then in 2018 I had the second of 2 strokes which let me legally blind. So now I'm working to prepare myself for life in my new reality. so gave up auto for mobility scooter. but as I watched at your video I had a crazy idea come to me. I bought a HD hoverboard when buing up several for my grandchildren it has a weight limit of 500lbs. with unknown range. And a standard hospital style wheel chair. I've been wondering what I was going to do with the hoverboard as non of my Grandchildren are big enough for it yet. Now I'm thinking my board & chair need to meet. I won't have handlebars so am thinking doing the hand wheel speed variation. I will have breaking covered by board as well as hands on rear tires. Heck I'm going to try it! wish me good luck, I'll let you know how it goes .
So I did the same thing but with a bolt down set up witch is way sturdier & bought a RWD scooter witch helped a lot with the uphill pulls like driveways , hope this comment helps
Had a chance to get it working thanks to this video. Unfortunately I didn't have anyone to help with the video so hopefully I can upload some vids soon. It's definitely a fun project....
Is it possible to figure out a way to have the handle bars. Down some? That would be painful for older folks to hold arms up that high. Other than that.......totally cool
Nothing comes to mind right now, but there has to be a modification to enhance the break and to give better traction on take off it's something to do with balancing it and getting the weight distribution correct but that's a killer modification and thanks for sharing I'm sorry, I don't use a chair but thank you for sharing that I just think it's a really big move for people to cooperate with the culture and cooperate with our community and share save some time for other people who are doing similar things, yeah? Big up!
I would taken a hacksaw to the handlebars to shorten them but overall a great idea because as you say the power assists for wheelchairs are just eye-wateringly expensive. Would loved to have seen a follow up vid. Thanks for posting.
T-7 Paraplegic here...It would be easier if you can just attach e bike wheels to your manual wheelchair...That way you can push it as a manual but also use it as a power chair too...Of course the only problem is trying to connect a wheelchair type joystick to the e bike controller...So it drives the right and left wheels like a tank...Browsing the web reveals robot enthusiasts have connected the Sabertooth 2x25 motor controller to a wheelchair type joystick...It also seems you can attach any type of motor to the Sabertooth...So I am waiting for the video showing how to hack a wheelchair joystick to connect to an e bike or Sabertooth controller...I mean then I can make my Jazzy power chair go faster instead of crawling at 4 mph...
If you had seat post clamps with quick release to hold your footplate to your frame you could make a custom footplate that holds the scooter. 1: Open 2 quick releases 2: swap footplate out for the scooter with its footplate mount 3: .... 4: win Remember you want to lower your center of gravity so keep the smaller back wheels and adjust the scooter/foot placement to correct the wheelchair angle. For the best results have tube clamps on each footplate for adjustment free exchanges.
Great Video, you’ve just got me started on a new project, thanks... PS. You might want to add some weight to the front end, either by a wraparound leg weight or just strap on a 5 to 10 pound weight to the front end to keep that tire on the ground...
Awesome I have the pop n drop with the Ecoreco M5 scooter.. It is expensive but what I like so much about it is the ease of use.. that is amazing! the quarter inch beem clamp is something i hav ebeen looking for. I was thinking of attaching a seat and cargo carriar and perhaps a small trailer to a push scooter. And if i got 4 of those i could create and attach the accessories to my scooter.
It seems if the bars were lower and possibly wider the rider may be more comfortable. The quick steeping of the scooter looks like going fast is a thrill
That's awesome and it looks kinda fun too,so now seeing this I'm just wondering in my case since I'm legally blind and I've got cerebral I'm wondering if there's a way to mount my blind cane to my manual wheelchair that could allow it to still move back and forth when I'm turning the wheels and still allow me to take it off easily whenever I'm walking too.
Very cool I am in need of this I wanted the firefly but insurance won't help...biggest problem for me is not able to get up n down from the ground or transfer to any platform for now
Great video. I've tried riding one of those rentable electric scooters a few times but it's always a total fail, my chair just slides around on top of the scooter so it's interesting to see how much difference clamping it down makes - might have to give it a go!
Exactly what I been thinking off doing. How does it go uphill or small Kerbs? My thought was even simpler, thinking of using portable vice. Main concerns is lack of weight in front and going uphill
What about using two escooters? It would make it more stable. And changing out the back brake to caliper brake. And I was thinking about using the front wheel conversion kit for an ebike. What do you think?
I have an older style frame it's an old Quickie so this foot plate idea will not work, but I use a power chair, also the handle bars for that scooter is really high up.
When you announced this on the podcast, I wanted to wait, but when I saw it on patrepn, I had to watch!! Wow, it looks really fast! Is the handle bar adjustable? Would it be easier to steer if it is lower? Keep safe!
I was wondering if you could add a lower mounted handlebar to the column, and switch the brake and throttle elements down. Holding up the arms that high might also be partially causing the wobble factor.
@@Wheels2Walking Quite true! I'm a 73 yr old, T-10 complete, 20 years post injury that can't do a wheelie like you do, but I wouldn't hesitate to try shortening the tube.
I would make a handlebar for the scooter that was better for the wheelchair. I would do this professionally have it modified then I would Mass produce and sell them.

You need a rear wheel drive scooter lol
Never thought of doing this !!!! Now to figure out how to make it a release clamp system so you dont have to have an extra chair .
There are people in the FB group that have found that solution!
@@Wheels2Walking Awesome , thank you

I never knew that I needed a Wheels2Walking & Colin Furze collaboration until now. You should get Colin to make you a drift chair.
I didn’t know I did either until right now!
i wonder if you could use these parts to easily rig up one of those rentable electric scooters that some places have!
Absolutely! Bird scooters are just these scooters with stickers on it 👊🏻

Footplates are removable and you can get a mount that is going into the mounting site on the frame.

@@Wheels2Walking yes good idea! Would be a great way to zip around a new city once we can go places again
Awesome! I love this type of stuff.
Same! I had so much fun!
if you do this try to make sure you get a scooter with suspensions (especially at the back)
I die "I'm johnny knoxville And welcom eto ackazz!". 😂
Exactly what I been thinking off doing. How does it go uphill or small Kerbs? My thought was even simpler, thinking of using portable vice. Main concerns is lack of weight in front and going uphill
OK that was the best intro ever! haha
Hahahah thanks! I thought it was pretty great too!
This is awesome! And also, you're kinda cute! So there's also that! But seriously, now i want to do this!
When you announced this on the podcast, I wanted to wait, but when I saw it on patrepn, I had to watch!!
Wow, it looks really fast! Is the handle bar adjustable? Would it be easier to steer if it is lower? Keep safe!
The stalk is foldable but not adjustable. Small compromise though for such a fun time :D
I was wondering if you could add a lower mounted handlebar to the column, and switch the brake and throttle elements down. Holding up the arms that high might also be partially causing the wobble factor.
Looks so much fun!
Dude that's wicked! Stupid question but you can take the chair off the scooter, right?
Can you do a review of your new wheelchair? - I don't use a wheelchair but I'm fascinated
He did already
Of course! I have a video called “reviewing my new custom wheelchair”
Can you do A wheel barrel video because I’m having problems
Dog this thumb nail had me cracking up brooo
Same dude. I felt like such a gangster lol
You should try a Jet Engine next! LOL
Then of course. you'll have to make it amphibious too.
This looks badass!
Excellent idea!
I urgently need such a chair and this device (scooter), how much is the price?
Wow I like your wheelchairs, we don’t have access to such wheelchairs
How about put the starting handles lower down like right infront of your instead like now high up in the air?
I would shorten the tube attached to handlebars.
That takes a bit of work and tools I don’t have. Maybe one day though 😁
@@Wheels2Walking Quite true! I'm a 73 yr old, T-10 complete, 20 years post injury that can't do a wheelie like you do, but I wouldn't hesitate to try shortening the tube.
Put a waght plat on the deck of the scooter or ratchet strap a dumbbell to the deck.
I would make a handlebar for the scooter that was better for the wheelchair. I would do this professionally have it modified then I would Mass produce and sell them.
Have you ever tried the Freedom Trax. I'm curious about that.
Richard: "Johnny Knoxville eat your F***ing heart out!"
How crazy would it be if he somehow saw this 🤔😂
We 100% have to make that happen @@Wheels2Walking LOL!😃
i wish could have like this ...it's been 6years lying in my room .
That’s a sweet idea
Thanks! All inspiration to the FB group!
Is the handle bars not too high/awkward?
Like angle it towards
Looks fun man 💯
