  • Liverpool 2-2 Swansea City
    Football League Division One
    Date: 3 October, 1981
Swansea City almost caused a First Division upset at Liverpool just five months after Bob Paisley's side won the European Cup.
The Welsh club took a two-goal lead at Anfield before two Terry McDermott penalties rescued Liverpool on an emotive day.
Both sides wore black armbands in memory of iconic Liverpool manager Bill Shankly, also the managerial mentor of Swansea boss and former Liverpool striker John Toshack, as the game took place a day after Shankly's funeral.
Wales international Leighton James fired Swansea into an early lead from the penalty spot in front of the Kop before former Everton striker Bob Latchford doubled the advantage in the second-half.
But two late penalties from midfielder McDermott saved the Merseysiders, who went on to win the league and the League Cup.

I was at this match. 10 years old. I grew up in Liverpool but my dad is from Swansea and - although a rugby man - he thought it would be nice for us to attend this fixture. Believe it or not, despite everything that Liverpool has achieved since, this is the best result from them that I’ve witnessed live. Every time I’ve been to see them in London, where I now live, they lose. I’ve seen them lose at Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Wimbledon (during their Selhurst Park days), West Ham, you name it! Serves me right for moving south, I suppose… Thanks for posting this, though. Brought back some childhood memories.

I wish referees still ran to the spot like that when giving penalties. Now it's just a straight arm whilst shaking the head back and forth to deny complaints. Also love watching football from before I was born in general. I love it for some reason. Shows that no matter how much money Sky pour into the Premier League, football is football.

I think this is the game that John Toshack pulled that stupid stunt with the Liverpool shirt during the minute's silence for Bill Shankly.

Even when he followed his 2nd pen in after scoring, McDermott made a meal of his tumble. Never a pen!
