  • The AGM-114 R9X Hellfire missile, also know as the 'Ninja Missile", "Ninja bomb" and "Flying Ginsu" is a sword bomb or a sword missile, that has sword-like blades that pops out to chop down the target instead of exploding. It was developed to reduce collateral damage. In this video, with the help of 3D Animation, we're going to take a look at how the AGM-114 R9X Hellfire missile and the other variants of the Hellfire missile works, in detail.

They may be able to target a passenger in a specific seat, but I highly doubt they can guarantee the safety of any neighboring passengers. Although, I'm picturing a comical scene where they score a direct hit on the front passenger as the driver and the two rear passengers step out of the vehicle completely beardless, complimenting each other on the closest shaves they've ever seen.

It is rockets and moving vehicles, they can TRY to target a specific seat, but after all, the car could slam its brakes on, or turn at the wrong moment.
And they are not in the business of OFFERING guarantees, merely TRYING to reduce collateral damage. Regardless of how well the effort is made, we are talking about hefty delta-v and moving vehicles.

Less collateral damage is always good, but it does feel a lot more... concerning I guess? Like, just throwing a missile at someone in a car and taking out both the target and everyone in that city block is one thing, that's just callous. But to be able to single out a single person and go full Fruit Ninja on them with minimal bystander casualties? That's a whole new level of being personal.

Blowing up someone leaves little to look at. Since this was used yesterday and the video of the aftermath is on the internet, personal is exactly what this thing is. You have to admit, a knife wielding rocket is pretty cool! Pretty amazing that with the extensive lever arm of the knives when extended puts a tremendous amount of leverage on the hinge point as well as the blade. That must be some serious blade alloy and hinge structure to withstand the forces of sudden impact. The assertion that the knife portion of the Hellfire can withstand concrete impact is dubious.

It doesn't melt, it deforms. It DOES get hot, of course, just not hot enough to melt.
Think about it like this, if you could hit the copper hard and accurately enough with a hammer, you could shape it into the cone.
This is actually done in foundries, with drop-hammers and die-faces. It is how copper and brass and aluminum blind-rivets are made for example, you take a rod of material, and holding the shaft in a chuck which supports it, you drive the end into a swage, and that forms the cap of the rivet. But the rivet never melts, because it never gets hot enough to melt.@@sygdesignworks

The US used one of these missiles to take out an Iranian general who had just presented his diplomatic credentials to a Swedish ambassador. The US claimed to be unaware that he had become a diplomat and that taking him out at the Tehran airport with one of these missiles was legitimate. However, it was subsequently learned that the US knew he had become a diplomat and was going to the airport to greet the ambassador. So the US government used this to assassinate an Iranian diplomat. The Swedish ambassador was also wounded in the attack. The driver of the car was also killed in the attack.

The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't.
In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was.
The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

    • @dposcuro
      @dposcuro 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

There isn't much to learn from. All we see left is the "warhead:, pneumatic accumulator, guidance, propulsion, and controls.
The seeker, and autopilot are basically going to be turned into tiny shards on impact, because, well, they hit first. And they are what really differentiates a missile.
Secondly is, the likely suspects who _could_ learn from it? Probably already have. Russia and China are pretty much guaranteed to have acquired Hellfires in mildly used condition at some point already, and they already have missiles that are roughly comparable. But what if ISIS, or whatever gets a hold of it? Then they have some parts that might as well be magic to them. And I am not taking anything away from them, they are impressively determined fighters...
But the reality of the situation is? ISIS, nor Hamas, nor whatever non-state, terroristic organization...has advanced manufacturing capabilities. They don't have the technology, nor the understanding to reverse engineer something like the Hellfire, and even if they did? They don't have a manufacturing plant to make a missile out of. Hamas does make mortars and rockets, yes. But they, as far as we are aware? Do not have the capability of making guided munitions.
There is of course, another point to consider: Even if the R9X is much more accurate than say, what Russia has? It doesn't matter. We know the Russian 9M120 and the 9K121 are more than capable of hitting a tank reliably, and destroying it. Russia isn't concerned with "collateral damage," in the slightest, so it doesn't matter to them to design a missile able to take a single person in a car. They would just destroy the entire car, and anyone within 10 metres of the vehicle. "No man, no problem."
If China could learn to make a more accurate missile, again, would it matter?
