Ellington was always out for exquisite " voices " of originality and personality to mold into his music, with Alice he could do things that not many singers could comprehend. It happened that Duke got criticism over his choices, the critics thinking it should be in a ..well let´s say more traditionell way...but Duke saw beyond those horizons...as long as music is beyond categories and sounds good it can be any mold! In my opinion he so right about that!
When Johnny Hodges bends those notes - oh my! and Alice Babs, well, I know that Duke must have LOVED working with her; it seems she could sing anything!
