You know, I have a similar thing for students, but I haven’t tried just putting tape on the pencil. I’ll DEFINITELY start doing this. Thanks so much for sharing! It’s always great seeing a fellow English teacher here on TH-cam! 😊👏
You are the absolute cutest! This will be my first year teaching high school (previously taught elementary). I'm so freaking excited and I'm going to use this pencil idea!
I’m sorry I’m seeing this a month late! I cannot imagine the transition from elementary to high school, wow. Best of luck to you. I would love a 6 month update!
I’m a cusp baby ❤. I’m a Scorpio Sagittarius. Thanks for the pencil idea. I’m teaching high school for the first time this upcoming school year after teaching middle and elementary. I’ve always wanted to teach HS but decided to teach all the other grades first just to make sure it’s really what I want lol. The pencil flood gate has always annoyed me, so I’ve already added washi tape to my ever growing Amazon cart.
Nice to see a new teacher channel. My dumb idea is to attached a string to the desk and pencil like one of those magnetic drawing, kiddie boards. Unfortunately you will just see kids just ripped the wire out regardless like a broken electric cable RIP ☠️ but as a student having those luxurious stylus pens for my laptop/tablets... I better keep my $90 electric pen on a leash despite looking ridiculous lmao 😅
I have a blue box full of pencils my high schoolers can take from. It's super-useful, but it's currently at the back of the room. I may have to move things around to put it at the front. And the tape is genius - a good use for the washi I collect! Also, since I'm seeing this after my school year has done, thank you for the memory spark - showing off your outfit reminded me of a few of my girls, who would take the last few seconds before the bell every day to do a 'vibe check' on Snapchat to show off their outfits and say where each piece came from. It became a routine, and on the last day of school, they got the whole class to do the vibe check with them - even the ones who rolled their eyes during the year at the daily routine. Made me realize just how much they'd bonded as a group.
You can always take some pencils and chew them up a bit (without using teeth) and place them in the pencil box. I remember a teacher who had a collateral system in which the student had to hand him something of value( shoe, watch, etc)to borrow a pencil and it would be returned before class ended.
I used that system for a while before this one, and it worked, but there were many times the “exchange” interrupted me working with other students. It didn’t do anything for good timing, even though I repeated endlessly that the time to ask for a pencil was at the beginning of class. I love the suggestion though and would say it’s in my top 5 ideas for borrowing pencils.
@@teachingwithalexa That was my system for years, but the kids knew how it worked and were expected to come forward silently and quickly so interruptions were very minimal. Need a pencil? Come up with your collateral, a shoe, your lunch before lunch period, or your backpack. Leave it in the basket beside my desk and take a pencil. When class was over, do the exchange. If a pencil or other item was returned broken, defaced, or chewed up, or if lost, you had three school days to bring in a new replacement.
@@mariekatherine5238 I like the basket by the desk idea. I can’t picture half the students who constantly needed pencils replacing anything ever, let alone in 3 days though. But I could very well be wrong! I think that system sounds great. I’m a fan of collateral. There are only so many ways we can hold them accountable. That’s a good one.
great procedure! thank you for not limiting students by saying it is always thier responsibility to come with a writing utensil, and thinking of a way to benefit both sides. This is definitely a helpful procedure I look forward to implement. Thanks again for the great video, and for the outfit spin! I like the clothing inspo too ;)
We are so close to our daughter’s birthdays. I’m still figuring this cusp thing out 🤣 If you’re into astrology, you should listen to updates from previous months and see where it fits with your personality. It’s a fun hobby ♉️ Do you consider yourself more of an Aries or Taurus?
In my room, the tape would conveniently vanish, along with everything else in the box, perhaps the box itself! Congratulations on honest students! Where do you teach?
That’s interesting because I’ve never had that problem. Over the course of 2 months I have to replenish a few, but I’m okay with that. What grade do you teach? I’d try again with another group of students. I don’t want to say exactly where I teach here, but I will say I teach in a Title l high school in central NJ.

I seems so insignificant, but I honestly think it’s why they last so long!
