    This was amazing. Such clarity and depth on the performance analysis. Thank you very much for sharing. So essentially 8840u is pretty much almost the same as 7840u as expected. I had my hopes up when I saw the performance per watt being higher but if total system draw is also higher then it doesn't make much of a difference. 5% more at the highest tdps isn't anything to write home about.

    • @darkcss1054
      @darkcss1054 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@Zenden1ST Yes, I have. At 1080p it handles pretty much everything you throw at it, even using only 15w TDP.
      I have played GTA V, Forza Horizon 5, Black Desert Online at 1080p/ultra, some Wii U emulation with 1080p/60fps mods (such as breath of the wild, Mario Kart 8) and all these games play at 50 fps+ at 15w.
      For more heavy games such as Read Dead Redemption 2 I found you got to lower the resolution to 720p for it to run well, but you don't really notice the smaller resolution in such a small 7 inch screen.
      If you plan to player at higher resolutions (1440p/4k) using the oculink or an HDMI adapter then you'll have to acquire the GPD g1 or make your own oculink setup.

      Coming from both the Max 1 and the Max 2 (6800U from 2022) I can say the size of the device itself isn't a ... huge factor. What I'm saying is it isn't cumbersome. The bigger screen is fantastic and from a performance perspective there are a few emulated games on RPCS3, Xenia, and Yuzu that run better on the Max 2 vs. Max 1. And I'm speaking of the Max 1 upgraded to run the 4500U when GPD sold an upgrade board.

Now I just purchased the win max 2 and I’m going to sell the legion go I guess.

  • @exklimexklim
    @exklimexklim 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    This is 7% a bit wrong…
    Battery cells even tho they report the same amount of voltage nor wattage the actual nod is different all the times.
    Batteries aren’t build equally and they have about 10% margin error before leaving QC from the factory. Which means batteries range 10% margin power when sold.
    You also have to consider the ASSIC of each system, and not just for the APU but for practically every chip found in the SOC. Even vram are build at a different ASSIC.
    Let’s talk about IPS screens and windows random background processes, at what time do they activate and for how long.
    IPS backlight LEDs are as well not rated at a perfect power consumption; this problem gets worst when you add hundreds of them all together then the power consumption of an IPS screen can vary to up to 30%.
    Windows background processes timing vary a lot, extremely a lot. Windows is unpredictable.
    The end result is that the 88xx vs 78xx are just equal and it’s just a rebrand, like always. Topically intel ticktock.

    Wouldve loved to see charts based on matching the total system wattage rather than TDP to see if there’s any real appreciable difference.
    From what you explained, it seems like you could just bump up your 7840U TDP by 10% and, hey presto, you have an 8840U.

  • @tomoprime217
    @tomoprime217 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    You could have simply showed the total system power draw with each tdp/fps slide for better understanding and spared us the long nuanced explanation. Then you can average down the 8840U numbers to match at a theoretical equal power footing. In any case in short it seems the performance gains are not much over the 7840u as to be expected.

    -what kind of performance the machine can give when also running for around 3 hours of battery playtime

    these are pretty much the only two use cases I care about

    Honestly the Win Max 2 is so perfectly designed. It is legit the best hybrid device. I want the Max 3 to just fix a few things, but if it stays similar to the Max 2, we are good. Max 3 improvement could be softer face buttons (Vita dpad is perfect but the ABXY is a bit rough), the webcam placement if they could move it to the top instead, and then that's pretty much it. I love everything about it. I have the 6800U version, so I will wait to upgrade to the 9000 series since the 8000 series isnt too much of an upgrade from the 7000 series.

    Interesting regarding the Memory. I have the Legion GO, and there's an option to run the memory at 6400mts. Now it's easy to see what that setting would be ideal for. Now if only Last Epoch would run worth a damn on the Legion Go.... :(
    Eager to see if you have a review for it. I went with it after using the Deck for just over a year, and it's pretty awesome. I only miss the sleep resume feature from Steam OS, and i see Chimera OS still has some ways to go, but Really not that bothered with Windows as much as I thought I would be. Just not used to seeing memory in every metric topping out. So long as the programs end up getting what they need from hungry windows 11, it's all good, suprisingly.
    CPU's on the handhelds are really overkill, and it would be nice if we could get all that cache to help the GPU instead.

    While I know you probably can’t afford to do what LTT is doing but do you believe the binning could be at play for some of the TDP/clock variances?
    Referring to their multi-7000 series benchmarking they’re doing.

      @@reaperreaper5098 if I’m thinking of the same video they had 2 or 3 Legion GO right?
      LTT did a larger sample size of like 10 I believe. But mobile CPUs may have better binning processes or not being pushed to fringe operating conditions like a desktop CPU may.

      @@Zaf9670 No, I'm talking about when Gamers Nexus tested like 30 CPUs, multiples of only a handful of skus from Intel and AMD.
      GN also is substantially better at testing stuff, since they actually know how to do deep dive testing.

    • @Zaf9670
      @Zaf9670 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@reaperreaper5098 I agree GN is great about deep dives but LTT has been dumping money into their process as well.
      The margin of error had more sway with LTT so I’ll have to see the GN to compare again. There were variances per application even suggesting some execution units performed better/worse across SKUs which will be even more important as architecture moves forward (NPU 1 did 5% better than NPU 5 but AVX-512 on 1 was 7% better or something as an example).
      The margin of error and overall performance is fine but when you’re talking razor thin margins on mobile the 5% could be an hour of extra battery or less heat.

    • @reaperreaper5098
      @reaperreaper5098 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Zaf9670 It’s not a matter of how much money each company dumps in. It’s a matter of how thorough the employees are, and both GN and LTT have perfectly demonstrated that LTT doesn’t have the experience to properly test hardware nor do they actually care.

    Hmm, I have first WinMax 2, the one before the oculink port. I don't think I'll ever use the oculink port but this seems like a upgrade that's worth it, the last upgrade wasn't worth it to me. Do they still have mother board upgrades?
    I have to say my Win Max 2 is my favorite notebook ever. I have alright eyesight, everything is kidna small, but it's really portable. The keyboard is the smallest a keyboard can be for normal typing. I had the original Win Max and did not like it, keyboard was too small but this is just big enough to use. The gamepad for me is a bonus, I have used it as a normal computer more than for gaming, but I like how it's there. I missed out on netbooks, they were too expensive for me. By the time I was working full time that trend had ended so this is great for me, having a notebook in that for factor.
