These Whiskeys Are Trying To Trick You!!

  • With 1000's different labels at everyone's fingers when they walk into a liquor store brands will do whatever it takes to get you to buy their whiskey. Some of these are a little easier to spot than others, so Dan and I decided to go through some of our most hated things that brands do to trick buyers.

    The Bottled In Bond act is fantastic, their needs to be more consumer protection legislation. 👍

  • @Mischief_T
    @Mischief_T ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I wish they’d do more to stop this like the bottled in bond act did. Make a small batch act and force it to be less than 5000 bottles or at least more than 12 years old. That would price out some of the distilleries trying to pump out tons of young crap as “small batch”

    Proper 12 does not claim to be 12 years. It's because... he's from the Dublin surburb of Cremlin meaning that 12 is the area code in Dublin where McGregor grew up. (Thanks to you guys I TOTALLY get out on all things whiskey now. But I'm digging it.)

    I remember 6 years ago at 50 y/o I had a pour of Whiskey/Bourbon for the first time since college and I actually liked it. That started my journey of collecting. I wasted a lot of money before becoming educated about Whiskey/Bourbon. I now have over 600 bottles and have given away over 100 that I did not care for. I have 2 Speak-Easy's at 2 out of 3 homes. I am hooked!

    I always thought Straight bourbon had to be aged at least two years, and if less than 4 years it had to have the age listed on the label. That's why AAA 10 Star and Benchmark both say something like "Aged at least 36 months".

    I would add Heaven's Door to the list of exceptions on celebrity whiskey. Had some killer single barrels from them.

  • @tommyrq180
    @tommyrq180 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I’m skeptical about “single barrel” as well. You’d think it would come from one barrel. Should be 200-250 bottles with some identifying mark about which bottle it came from. I listened to a podcast by a craft distiller from Chicago and her answer to the question “what does single barrel mean” never mentioned “it comes from a single barrel.” She danced all around it.

  • @MichaelSullivanCincinnatux
    @MichaelSullivanCincinnatux ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love how the Elijah Craig Small Batch bottle you used as your exemplar is the smallest of all possible small batches - it is a single barrel expression and therefore not even batched with anything before being bottled. I suppose the ~250 bottles they got out of that barrel might be considered a small batch. Ugh. Given all the regulations on whiskey labels in America it is stunning that labels are still covered with meaningless marketing terms to dodge transparency or ride the wave of current trends.

    For some reason, I thought companies were legally required to list state of distillation. Not sure why I got that in my head, but I really feel like that should be a requirement. Also, side note: (similar to the Kentucky Owl) my bottle of Blue Run Golden Rye just simply says "hand bottled in Bardstown KY" no "produced" or "distilled" on the bottle.

    • @javieracosta3439
      @javieracosta3439 ปีที่แล้ว

      The TTB regulatory people have been a bit lax of late (probably just overrun with label approval requests) and have let some things slide.
      I have come across that if you happen to source from a distillery that also happens to be in your state (*cough* cough* Kentucky) you do not legally need to relate that fact on the bottle.

    So with the Blade and Bow I will say this, I’ve been on a tour there probably 6times ish and every guide there has touted or pushed Blade as their offering so it is kind of the only bourbon offering claimed by that old historic distillery, “always take photos in Julian’s old office” so I totally get where you’re coming from but I feel like just based on the history of that place, we should cut them some slack, if for no other reason than me sort of being able to almost convince myself that this wonderful historic distillery is still chugging along in some way

    American whiskey is a total mess regulation wise. You definitely need federal regulations to confirm; Distilled by, mash bill, age, filtration, colouring? This will help define your product and promote sales. People need to know what they are buying. In Europe and every other serious whiskey/whisky making country including Scotland, they have very clear and accurate information that empowers whisky/whiskey geeks

    It's weird how celebrity whiskey isn't as good as other celebrity owned spirits. Like, Dwayne Johnson's tequila is legit, and Ryan Reynold's gin is pretty good. I think Brother's Bond whiskey is slightly over priced on the basic bottles, but it's a good product. Ian and Paul don't seem like just a couple actors trying to sell you some crap whiskey, they seem like legit whiskey nerds interested in producing a quality whiskey....

    • @ianlange8108
