Before I started drinking whiskey I gifted a friend a bottle of Willet pot still. Once I found out how bad it was I called him up to apologize. He was very gracious saying gifted whiskey is the best whiskey. But he has plenty left when I come over
I love when people get me bottles I wouldn't buy myself, especially like cheaper stuff. Someone gifted me a bottle of Howler Head once, which I was always curious about but couldn't bring myself to buy cause I don't drink flavored stuff, and I was shocked at how much I actually enjoyed it lol.
Kinda like your friend I still have almost the full bottle, but I am pumped that I got it as a gift.
Been using mine for a mixer.
Oddly I like willet pot still. But I also like Irish whiskey so I’m used to pot still stuff.

Larceny gets crapped on a lot but I really do enjoy it, I think as an entry-level wheated bourbon it stands out enough from MM and the Green River wheater to be worth a try.
I think it's really solid. One of my go-to pours for its price point. On blinds I've had it go back and forth with Elijah Craig.

Balcones ranked higher than I expected lol. I get why most people hate it, but I love the wild ride that it is.
Balcones makes some really good stuff, but also some really bad.
The Balcones Cask Strength Rye is one of my favorite whiskys ever. i describe it as if you shot cosmic radiation at Old Forrester then made it mad.
The one I had tasted like the BBQ powder in a David's BBQ sunflower seed bag.
I love a nutty profile. Old tub takes it to another level in a good way for me.

I find it has notes of black tea in it. Which I like. I enjoy Willett
I like the other Willetts, but the pot still is disgustingly sweet.

I can't fathom the Balcones Rye hate! That's one of my favorite ryes. We get all kinds of single barrel barrel proof store pics finished in all kinds of barrels like rum, sherry, and tequila here in Texas. I get it's not for everybody but I don't get the hate. It tastes like dark chocolate covered espresso beans to me.

Never been a great bottle for us.
No kidding, their rye is a great whisky. But it's also an outlier rye. It doesn't live in the MGP 95/5 or Kentucky barely-rye wheelhouse whatsoever, and that's probably why people don't like it.
Most people don't like things that are challenging, and Balcones makes challenging whiskys. If you're a person who 'likes their coffee to taste like coffee, dagnabit!' then you'll probably hate Balcones, but if you like naturally processed Ethiopian beans that taste like funky berries, you'll probably love Balcones. Or it could just be a genetic thing like cilantro and the soapy taste.
Pretty sure the cask strength barrel picks that may or may not be finished are completely different than the standard 100proof shelfer they had in this video. Not so hard to fathom after all.

I don't love Basil Hayden's, but I don't think there is anything particularly flawed about it. It's a generic, 80 proof, little flavor, whisky. It's whisky for someone who doesn't really like to drink whisky. It's unoffensive. That would be my guess as to why it rated highly. I don't think they did anything to screw it up, they just didn't do anything to try and make it good.
I definitely wouldn’t say it’s generic; it has a soured malt flavor to it that makes it difficult to put down
I love balcones rye, I think the problem people have is they expect it to be a typical rye like willet family reserve, whistle pig etc. But it's not even in the same baseball stadium. Have to treat it like an outlier or its own category. It's a woody, oily, chocolate bomb

I am wondering why Angels Envy was in the least favorite whiskies is it that people just don't like finished products? You could throw Rowans Creek in there or Noah's Mill. Both I struggled to finish.
Yeah, I can get behind Angel's Envy being overpriced for what it is, but I don't think it is particularly bad in any way.
Angels envy is horse piss. And the fact it was even mentioned in the same breathe as Noah’s Mill is laughable. Angels envy is for girls
A lot of people hate Texas Rye and I understand, but sometimes I actually go looking for it. My bottle has lasted 4 years and still going though.
The cask strength is definitely better. I have a cask strength port finish that is absolutely horrendous.
My dad liked the Willett bottle shape and I had enjoyed the Willett rye so we picked up a bottle, and instantly we knew that was a rough mistake when we tried it. Took awhile for that bottle to disappear.
Sidenote, I'm not a rye guy, but that Balcones is one of my top 3 favorite ryes of all-time 😂😎
I actually liked Willett Pot Still. For a while. Now that it's less than half full, it started to taste more like other Willett products with the pot still funk added.

Thank you for confirming the best of the worst... we were gifted a bottle of the "Willet Pot Still Reserve" and it was terrible (really undrinkable). How does the distillery not know this whiskey sucks? I believe they do, that's why it's in the fancy bottle.

I have to disagree with the Basil Hayden - I love it its one of my favorites I've never had the toasted one - but the regular Basil is GOOD
I think Basil Hayden is good for people who don't like bourbon. It's very muted. It's something my grandmother would like.

This should be limited to 6 bottles with 1oz pours and they have to drink the entire ounce... It's like a throwback to Pour Guesses punishment... ps - Dan smelling the first sample and bending over to throwup while saying "you motherf*cker" was AWESOME.
Picked up an Old Tub for $10. Thought it was decent for that price. Used it with a lot of coke and ginger ale.

Willett Pot Still doesn't taste great but I can drink it all night with no hangover. Early in my bourbon craze, I was drinking Woodford Reserve, and while I loved the taste, I found it gave me a headache almost immediately. No such problem with Willett. Maybe there's a correlation between sub par flavor and increased purity.
Any bottle if you don’t like straight, always makes a great mixer.
Is that chivalry bottle have a synthetic cork? Might actually get one if the cork doesn't dissolve since I won't drink it.
Maybe I'm just basic, but I love the standard Angel's Envy. Yes, it's sweet and a little one note but it's eminently pleasant, pure maple syrup. Not in the mood for complexity every night.

That’s exactly what I said when I tried the Balcones, tastes like some took one of the old ashtrays from a 80’s Pizza Hut and added water to it then bottled it

Granted mine is aged 5.5 years compared to the Rye 100 is what? 2 years?
I have yet to see a positive review of the Willet. Makes me wonder why it's still bottled.

That was super funny! Good stuff. I have several of those bottles at home and totally agree with those score. Those are products that will keep people away from drinking whiskey which is kind of a bummer.
I had a chance to try the Willet. It was seriously some of the worst alcohol I've ever had. Not a big fan of the Angel's Envy, but I'll drink it.
It really is terrible. The only people in my group that liked it were the non-whisky drinkers. aka my wife and mother-in-law. I think they liked how sweet it was.
I feel vindicated on the Willett. I've always hated it but a lot of people seem to fawn over it... or maybe it's just the bottle.
There is a small, weird subset of Willett fan boys in the bourbon community. It doesn't make any sense to me either.
I get a strong grass note on it. My guess is it needs more age.

A great one. I need to watch this weekly. I agree on Old Tub, a friend told me to buy it and I almost dumped the bottle. Even and Old Fashioned couldn’t redeem it. I ended up dumping into a vat with others I didn’t like and the combination was better than the individual bottles.
We mixed old tub with many things and could not make the bad go away!
Lol I have a bottle of that Balcones rye cask strength. I don't hate it, but admit I've had it well over a year. My wife took a tiny sip once and said "how can you put that in your mouth?!?" Same woman will happily nose and try Islay scotch. Thanks for your suffering on this one guys!

What you guys said about that pot still is what is upsetting to me, it's bad, and it's bad in a way where there is no way that the people who made it thought it was good. It tastes tainted, like something went wrong and they just said, fuck it, put it in a cool bottle and call it 65$.

So here is my thing about Angel's Envy and I wonder if other people have this problem with it. It's good for a finished bourbon but it gives me headaches so I've never bought another bottle....

Pot Still is like someone vomits in a bucket, someone extracted just the chunks for the mash, fermented it with crab apples and then decided it would be a good idea to bottle the distillate and sell it as a prank on humanity.

Oak and Eden might be improving their stuff. I bought one a few years ago that was an instant sink pour, but recently a buddy had one that was not half bad.
Yea we had a bottle when they first came out and never even reviewed it because of how bad it was. Honestly pretty solid
Castle and Key...over half of that bottle went into my forever bottle. Didn't care for Old Tub either. Also a big contributor to my forever bottle. Had Willet years ago. I finished the bottle because I didn't have a forever bottle at the time. Don't believe I enjoyed it.

I keep around 30 good bottles in my collection.. Picked up my first ever Willet Pot Still about 6 months ago. Immediately had the same reaction as something just seemed tainted about it. Kept revisiting maybe once a month to see if it opened up & changed (it didn't). Literally the only bottle I've ever poured 3/4 worth down the drain. Some god awful stuff!!!

Noahs Mill is the first bourbon I ever tried that literally made me gag. Tasted like moldy wood. Maybe I had a bad bottle but I swore off any willet product after that...

One of my favorite Ryes is Balconies Cask Strength Rye. Just goes to show you there is a whiskey out there for everyone. Also shows you not to believe as gospel the reviews of TH-cam whiskey “experts”
I find all Balcones products to taste “young”. Need a bit more time in the barrel.
PBR whiskey.. aged 5 seconds. Was in process of sending you a bottle to ask you to do a "top 10 worst" segment on your podcast.
That's not near as bad as what I saw on TikTok last week: Tim Smith Southern Reserve Whiskey, which looks like your standard aged whiskey. Except on the back, it says "aged 24 hours" and color and flavoring added. 100% intended to mislead you and I can't imagine it tastes good.

i dig old tub when its 20 something bucks. but in my area it seemed to nearly DOUBLE in price over night. its a good cheap whiskey. its a terrible $40 whiskey

I haven't had the Oak and Eden because the chunk of wood gimmick throws me off - but I agree the rest are simply awful! There is clearly differentiation among palates that makes some whiskeys more appealing to certain people, but this video gives me comfort in knowing there is some consensus on what bad whiskey is.
