  • Today, I present the 10 rarest LEGO Technic gears of all time! These range from a pink 40 tooth gear, all the way to a white timing gear used to calculate the speed of a vehicle. Many of these pieces serve an actual practical purpose, some are simply novelties, while others have bizarre history surrounding them!

    In the 2nd version of the Unofficial LEGO Technic Builder's Guide, released in 2016, Sariel said that the 3L Worm Gear had suffered from structural problems, which is why it was recalled shortly after those three sets hit store shelves. He didn't really go into much detail about it, but that's what he said.

    I agree, LEGO Technic should include more colourful gears, it makes it a bit more appealing to children and it also could serve as a colour coding system denoting which gears the motion from other gears are transferred to (for example in gearboxes) which would help people more easily learn how some of the more complex mechanisms in LEGO Technic actually work.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Color coded gears could make building speed transmission gearboxes much easier! For example, all speed 1 gears are blue, all speed 2 gears are green, all speed 3 gears are orange, etc.

    • @jokecenter9138
      @jokecenter9138 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Unbrickme Great idea! Although the red 16-tooth gear and the blue 20-tooth gear somewhat help you to distinguish where motion is transferred (such as the gearbox in the 42112 Concrete Mixer Truck), the colour-coded gears would definitely make it easier to tell. This would also make the sets appear more colourful as the gears we have now are in pretty drab colours (light bluish grey, dark bluish grey, pale yellow, black, with the only lively colours I can think of right now being the red 16-tooth and blue 20-tooth gears described above).

    • @BrickDesignerNL
      @BrickDesignerNL 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The current color scheme of gears help to pick the correct gear during building quickly. And help to distinguish different gear type / functions.
      It helps that the same function does not have two or more colors. For lots of builders designing with gears and moving arms (mechanica) is not as trivial. Lego tries to help to make it more insight full.
      And less colors in gears means easier planning and less waste in the production line. Since sets only have a few of each gear, and one gear type can be produced for multiple sets at once. And less service stock for missing, broken or replacement parts.
      Not all LEGO colors have the same chemical structure and thus different colors can have different mechanical properties. That's why you won't see reddish brown gears for example.

    @hydroworld-soontobemigrate6160 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Well, now technology has advanced to the point where most LEGO motors have built-in rotation sensors, so that timing gear isn't really needed anymore. But I can still see where you're going with the educational value.

      I think Lego should make a version of _every_ gear large enough that has a pin hole and driving ring receiver, including the 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, and even the 4-start worm.

    The timing gear was actually part of some non-technic sets. Especially from the Lego Exo-Force series.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but not in the white color. The barcode multi set is the only one to give the timing gear a practical purpose, while in other sets it was only used as decoration

    My theory on the weird worm gear is that it was lego realizing the part was extremely inflexible when building compared to the standard worm gear.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess that makes sense, but why outright replace it? Why not just keep the weird worm gear in those 2014 sets and then just never use it again?

  • @roozas270

    5:50 They did actually change it to a normal.

  • @karlosverko4871

    I think that type of worm gear is much more difficult to produce because, you have to, actually, combine worm and axle connector together.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That could definitely be a reason for why the unique worm gear got replaced by the standard worm gear

    • @BrickDesignerNL
      @BrickDesignerNL 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think both are just two mold pieces together. It's the ease of breaking it that made LEGO stop producing/using it.
