Thanks for this! At 6:28, when you paste it into the txt, you can see a long string of what appears to be code or an ID I suppose. When I follow your instructions, and paste it into the txt that I downloaded in your link, all that gets pasted is XInput Player 1
There is no ID string, just XInput Player 1. Tried it multiple times. Is that correct? Can the ID string just be anything? in the bit that you pasted, you can see it also says 'USB joystick' , which is the name of the controller that MAME was showing for you. For me, the name was XInput Player 1, but as I said, into the txt it just pastes that name, but not a longer ID string. Which is what I assume it must do for it to work.

Yeah. I think i mentioned it. But when using a controller. You just may only get the short name. Which is fine. That should still save input info as it should. Mame will still set your controller as p1 and or p2. The controller you happen to connect 1st will have player 1 priority or whatever joycode number you have it assigned too. Lets say you only want controller to be p3 and p4 if you are using those for those players if needed. The string may still say xinput player 1, but that will only be the defaulted name but not the player assignment. Assignment is determined by the part after the string which specifys joycode. I will do a follow video using controllers and arcade panel. So that video should clarify all that. Like I said in video. You can get pretty crazy with the ctlrl. So I'll try to have that out early next week which should help your scenario.

@@tkssitch Are you also considering doing a vid for the same thing but then for lightguns instead of gamepad controller? I assume it is a fairly similar process though. Thanks.

@5014lightstorm I do. I'm going break this down as much as I can and why it's useful. This video covers the basics and makes you aware of it. By the end of all this. You can have have multiple ctrlr file for however you have your cab set. Just change name of which ctrlr you have in mame.ini and you're good to go. Also if you do another mame build for any version of mame, you can just copy over your ctrlr over and have all your inputs and devices setup ready to go

Thanks, anyway you could help with track and spinner too?

I believe those should be working by default. You may need to goto device assignments in the mame ui settings and change it there. And map it in your inputs on the axis. For spinner it may say "dial" axis. So just click it and spin your dial. *I'm just giving an educated guess here since I don't have a spinner myself but should work, same steps should work with track. I'd also map the trackball access to the mouse axis as well*

Yea, everything remains good except my spinner

Great video. Kids steal / swap my Xbox controllers often, so might have to lock n label these ones ?

This should keep all your controllers and button cfg stable. If the default mapping doesn't work well for you after doing the ctrlr, just remap them in input assignments, and set the default.cfg folder to read only. That will ensure no matter what your controls will be set. If you made any in game changes to your button Assignments, you can set that games cfg file to read only as well to ensure it doesn't have mapping issues later on.
There so much to ctrlr, I'll do an update video over more advanced techniques you can do.

That mame ini file is missing from mine for some reason. I'm on 0.270

@@SavedbyGraceAlone84 OK, you'll need to create it first.
Just open your mame program and save configurations in the options menu. Then the mame.ini will be created
