Personally the poor young woman is in the wrong job for her at this time. The kids in the classroom don't need to be dealing with unstable adults. They need all the stability and safety they can get. The girl shouldn't be punished, but I just think it is not the right situation for her and she should get help for her own issues.

In a time past, I was in a very dark place. I couldn't see any way out (financial failure). I was always perplexed by professionals that used the phrase Dr. Delony did-one asked me- "Do you want to hurt yourself?" I replied that someone in my place already has more hurt than they can stand, and I just want it to END. I was saved by my 2 wonderful brothers, my beloved late wife, and a dedicated professional (+ declaring bankruptcy).

I am soooooo thrilled this woman is expressing CONCERN. No jokes like that or sexually-disrespectful jokes should not be tolerated either!

Definitely not in front of the kids but even in a therapy situation you can't discuss suicide. The system is set up to prevent liability not to actually help people.

Exactly and I think people find it insulting to be asked so directly. If you really cared you would do it differently. It's so obvious when it's for legal reasons. Additionally people may not actually feel like hurting themselves unless they have a history of self harm but have thoughts of ending their life or just in emotional distress and not sure what it will eventually lead to. If you call the police on them just to protect yourself you often do more harm than good but people act like they saved someones life. Rarely is that the case.

That was a surprising and straight forward answer, for the context of teacher and her teacher's aide that jokes of suicide. Boundaries.

4:33 - I feel like writing the person up isn't the route to go. I mean, that could easily send the person a signal that they could perceive as being cold and uncaring.

All employees need to understand that they have a job to do n that the job is more important than any one person. The fact that this particular job requires them to be appropriate enough to work with children should make it even easier to have that boundary and write the person up in a caring n thoughtful way of course. If this young woman is not only hurting emotionally and immature enough to think even after spoken to about this, that it still fine better she learn this lesson now than when she is 30 with her own family n needs the income to lay rent. Job loss is never easy or good but sometimes people need a wake up call to get the helo they need and frankly deserve. There has been a near epidemic I'm regular public schools with female teachers even in their 30's having sex with middle school kids even. If that's not an emotionally immature or psychologically damaged person who needs help I don't know what is. Maybe if those people had gotten help earlier even if it came from a job loss they wouldn't have wrecked a child's life, his parents life n their own as well as their own family. Several of these women are married.

I think it's just the humor of the younger generation. Incredibly unprofessional, she should be written up.

I disagree. I think she should have a warning but not be written up. Unfortunately, because she's making jokes about suicide it has to be taken seriously. I'd give the person a warning about calling the cops and calling 911. Also, I'd skip the write up, threaten she not come back until she gets proper treatment and to mention the negative impact on teachers.

A condition of employment could be a mental health evaluation.

A mental health evaluation is so easy to pass or just as easy to arbitrarily give someone red flags they don't actually have.

This teacher is amazing. I understand gallows humor but yeah, this takes extra.

Yeah I guess but as he said you have to be careful even with that. Damn sometimes John just goes way too long into his own stories especially when the point has already been made. We don't need to know you like butt crack jokes etc. Also please when people call for the love of God let them get straight to the point. We don't and more importantly they don't need all of Johns nervous energy ( it seems) jokes. If there's no way he can control this bc of ADHD or something I guess I could understand it more but I don't even know if that's the reason. People are upset... sometimes devastated ( not this call but many.) They should not have to get ready to respond to some of Johns lame jokes which seem far too much for his own benefit. I'm sorry to say this bc I really do like his show n think he does a very good job in handling so many calls.

It’s not that deep, but ultimately in a school it’s not appropriate
