  • How to prune pear espalier - Dan Neuteboom describes the difference between fruit bud and wood bud on an espalier pear tree. It is important to recognise the difference so that when pruning pear trees you leave the fruit buds in position to ensure a good crop. Oh thank you! Thank you so much. Here it is March 16 in California and I spent all day pruning half the pear tree yesterday and worrying that it was too late because the fruit buds have set. But this is the only way I know for sure what I am pruning. I’ve watched so many video and this one is the one I needed.

Little said but it was all I needed to know, thank you! Now I know what my fruit buds look like and what I need to do to keep them growing strong.

Great advice! I am the rare early pruner/ over pruner so this might be hard for me!

My three pears had lots of blossom, however there are now nearly no pears at all (four or five only per tree). What when wrong? Do birds eat the flowers or something else happened?

Seems like you don't mind the laterals (the branches growing off the main branches) growing straight up vertically? Or do you have more tolerance for that on an espalier form?
